richrichie··on I Met Paul Graham Once
Are you the "ordinary people" he was referring to in a recent tweet @ Musk?
richrichie··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
I have no grand opinion about Trump. He is as good as any other politician, though he might be marginally better from the prior that he is not a career politician and from the posterior conditioned by the fact that the bi-partisan establishment and the corporate media hate him. These are too strong a signal to ignore.

What irks me is the cheap virtue signalling by the laptop class which has been told to hate him since 2016. They had no opinion of the man - who is a literal Hitler and who was 70 years old in 2016 - before that. I despise such fakery.

richrichie··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
It counts as something only if you called out Obama as vigorously. I don’t see any evidence of that in your timeline.
richrichie··on The surprising struggle to get a Unix Epoch time from a UTC string in C or C++
> give us some truly excellent code that we really don’t deserve

Why such self flagellation?

richrichie··on TikTok goes dark in the US
This is misinformation. There is no evidence that he gave $100 million.
richrichie··on Kalman Filter Tutorial
Indeed. I always recommend Time Series Analysis by Hamilton for this reason. KF comes up as a natural way to solve linear models.
richrichie··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
Not one paper cited. Just random recitation of climate change hysteria tropes.

Life on earth had dealt with 120 meters of sea level rise. So please.

richrichie··on 'Homeless people given free lunch' to attend Trump Jr event in Greenland
Greenland has 50k people. Just give them 1 million per head, passport and ask them them to vote to join the US as a state.

Far better than annexing territories by war.

richrichie··on The Illustrated Guide to a PhD
Mendel did not have a PhD.
richrichie··on The Illustrated Guide to a PhD
Because i have worked with many math phds who lost their youth to something that they could not make a living on (research positions at universities are few and the competition is intense) and were writing C++ implementations of derivatives pricing models for a (comfortable) living.

I am not trying to discourage you, just a different perspective.

richrichie··on The Illustrated Guide to a PhD
I hope you have decent source of secondary income or your family is reasonably well off.

A math PhD might take 6-7 years to complete and I hope that, at the end of it all, you won’t have to come to London to look for C++ or Ocaml jobs at hedge funds or banks.

richrichie··on The Illustrated Guide to a PhD
That is the way. Not long ago, most of Science was done by rich people as a hobby. We need to get back to that system.
richrichie··on The Illustrated Guide to a PhD
PhD now is an expensive way to signal that you can persevere longer than the average human.

Unfortunately, that is not always a positive as many real life situations require you to make decisions under extreme paucity of information and reverse or change course at short notice. For such professions and roles it is a liability.

This is a big deal.

It is sad to watch Germany commit harakiri.

richrichie··on Predictions Scorecard, 2025 January 01
> It distorts where VC money goes, always to something that promises impossibly large payoffs–it seems it is better to have an untested idea that would have an enormous payoff than a tested idea which can get to a sustainable business

But this is the whole point of VC investing. It is not normal distribution investing.

richrichie··on Scientists uncover how the brain washes itself during sleep
This is especially true in climate science. There is a huge chasm between the public and private (post couple of drinks) sides.
richrichie··on Writing as Transformation
Thank God, i have company. I used to think I had early onset dementia.
richrichie··on Collusion through Common Leadership [pdf]
These type of firms exist in all sectors.

Tipping should be - as it is treated elsewhere in the world - treated as discretionary, performance bonus. 0 is perfectly acceptable.
richrichie··on Social media distorts perceptions of norms (2024)
> if you made murder legal there would be A TON of murders,

This is an assumption.

> it is that simple (I personally might pop a cap in couple of people that have wronged people I love)

I dont think so. I will bet good money that you don not have what it takes to kill. Most people do not.

richrichie··on Social media distorts perceptions of norms (2024)
It has more nuance. The supposition that there are significant number of murderers walking among us that would not murder because it is illegal has no basis.

Crime statistics imply that most murders are results of either passion or pre-meditated/ well planned. These have nothing to do with legality of it. We have to have the law for an entirely different reason.

richrichie··on Social media distorts perceptions of norms (2024)
Murder was never legal or “allowed”.

If you believe that people do not kill because it is illegal, you are on a shaky ground.

richrichie··on Social media distorts perceptions of norms (2024)
If you believe that people do not kill because it is illegal, you are on a shaky ground mon ami.

Twitter as X now is very different from the heavily censored and woke cesspool it was.

richrichie··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
Agree, it is personal. I grew up in poverty and i viscerally know its negative reinforcement cycle.
richrichie··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
I would rather be rich than poor, even if i have more “problems”. It is a slam dunk case. Everything is easier, including finding love.
