richjdsmith··on LG TVs caught spying even when offline or on standby
Samsung TVs certainly do. A massive PITA.
richjdsmith··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
Same. Both times I tried it was adamant that I can only use opus. I was reworking my company content (financial services) and it was not helpful.
richjdsmith··on Cloudflare OS: an open platform for agents, apps, and work
It certainly feels like the copywriters at cloudflare received marching orders to write for a broader audience, which means, write for no one. I miss their more technical writing style.
richjdsmith··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
I was just looking at the same thing and how flawed it is that we tie parameter count with "intelligence". GLM-5.2 is my go to day to day model because of how darn good it is. I had no idea it had a substantially lower parameter count over deepseek v4.
richjdsmith··on Rails on SQLite: new ways to cause outages
Switching all my projects from psql to SQLite was a bit of a PITA but has absolutely been worth it. Keeping with the “do it the rails way” has kept mental overhead low, and seems to jive well with using LLMs.
richjdsmith··on Don't give children under age 13 smartphones
Related to this is WaitUntil8th, a movement encouraging parents to sign up in groups/regional block (think a PAC) so there is less pressure on individual kids if their peers are also banned.

For what it is worth, after speaking with a friend of mine that teaches 8th grade, I think this movement should be expanded to social media in addition to cell phones.

richjdsmith··on Paprika 53 Gravel Bike
A different new website. Abosloutely loved it and I'm sure will be appreciated by others.
richjdsmith··on RubyLLM: A delightful Ruby way to work with AI
… I’ve been using Ruby for years and never thought to use show_source like this in a debugger. Thanks kind stranger, you just made my day!
richjdsmith··on The Enshittification of Everything [2024-07-25]
Agreed. I think the article does a great job going into exactly that definition.
richjdsmith··on Show HN: Recommendarr – AI Driven Recommendations Based on Sonarr/Radarr Media
This is really cool, and very well done! Would love to see it more on a per-user basis, as I share access with my family and do not have similar tastes at all. Perhaps tied in with Overseer API and Tautulli to see what users are requesting, then actually watching?
richjdsmith··on Cheap solar power is sending electrical grids into a death spiral
There is a finish company working on something that might fit this need: domestic sand batteries.

richjdsmith··on Fake VS Code Extension on NPM Spreads Multi-Stage Malware
I recently tried RubyMine IDE by jetbrains after having jumped on the VS Code bandwagon since its first beta release. It has been incredible. Instead of monkeying around for 3 hours once a month because some plugin broke, or some dependency updated and a vscode plugin wasn’t expecting this, I just code.

Back in the Sublime text days, it was easy. I think I had forgotten how complex I had made VS Code. Turns out, paying someone else $120/year to deal with that complexity in an IDE is a helluva good deal at your average developers hourly pay.

richjdsmith··on We're bringing Pebble back
It certainly does sound like Canada. I am one of the lucky ones and do have a family doctor and it is still a minimum of 6 weeks for me to book an appointment to see him.

If I am really in trouble, I can go to his clinic as a drop-in (along with dozens of others) and wait, hoping somebody doesn't show for their appointment.

The state of healthcare in Canada is...bad. really bad. Canada's healthcare system is effectively using long wait times as a form of passive rationing, where delays lead to natural attrition of patients. This is a poor solution to address the per-capita physician shortages by decreasing demand rather than increasing access to care.

richjdsmith··on Is Iceland getting ready to join the EU?
Couldn't agree more. Greece is a great example of what happens to a country when they have a sovereign debt crisis and no control over the value of their currency.

The ability to control your overnight bank rates, and your monetary supply is important. I don't think the convenience of easy travel or easy(ier) trading of goods outweighs it at all.

richjdsmith··on Microsoft Confirms Password Deletion for 1B Users
My mother has been using it because "now [she] only needs to enter her 4 digit computer pin instead of her long Bitwarden password"

Unfortunately she is unwilling to change her Windows pin to anything other than the PIN she uses everywhere else.

This has not improved her security at all. Before she switched it from what I assume was a Microsoft prompt, she had (through a bit of coaching from me) been fine with Bitwarden + TOTP

richjdsmith··on No GPS required: our app can now locate underground trains
That's actually a really cool idea. I am not sure what variance there would be on a light sensor though.
richjdsmith··on SQLite on Rails: The how and why of optimal performance
Anyone who is looking at using SQLIte + Rails should check out the work done by Oldmoe (X/Github) on his Litestack project.

Here's the intro paragraph: "Litestack is a Ruby gem that provides both Ruby and Ruby on Rails applications an all-in-one solution for web application data infrastructure. It exploits the power and embeddedness of SQLite to deliver a full-fledged SQL database, a fast cache , a robust job queue, a reliable message broker, a full text search engine and a metrics platform all in a single package."

I'm currently using it on a project and can't say enough good things about it!

richjdsmith··on Boeing 737-900ER: Second model to be inspected after 737 MAX 9 blowout
I said the same to my fiancée. We have gold status on Westjet (Canada’s second largest carrier and it has a hub airport close by) and I just put in the cancellation on my westjet credit card and will use up the rest of my credit. They use predominantly 737-800s and 787s in their fleet. AirCanada, their direct competitor, has a significantly larger airbus fleet. I’ll start using them from here on out just to decrease my odds of flying on a 737MAX
richjdsmith··on 2.7M Brits still use a 3G only handset
Has 4G/5G improved? When I lived in the UK (Midlands until 2019) it was entirely unreliable. I'd wager 75% of my connection was on 3G as soon as I was more than 3Km from a town's high street.

I can say with confidence that the shift from 4G/LTE to 5G where I live now in British Columbia (Canada) mountains is not fun. It's significantly less reliable. I understand that its 10x faster, but I'd much prefer reliable over fast when it comes to mobile phones.

richjdsmith··on With 1 Sentence, Patagonia Just Gave a Masterclass on How to Treat Your People
For what it’s worth, we close during the Christmas and New Years break every year but still pay our employees/don’t use up their PTO.

I don’t want to work during that time, and don’t think it’s reasonable to make my employees align their holiday schedules with mine.

richjdsmith··on Housing wealth is meaningless, destructive and fundamentally changing society
I do mostly construction financing for a living and can confirm, housing construction costs in BC are ludicrous. A major factor in the jump is the build code changes and new environmental and safety requirements. All those extra electrical circuits and that extra insulation is making houses significantly more expensive than they used to be.
richjdsmith··on U.S. reenters the nuclear fuel game
Wait, where is Hungary invading?
richjdsmith··on Tire dust makes up the majority of ocean microplastics
With the continued shift to EVs, petrol taxes just don't make sense as a form of taxation to pay for roads. I think we should be shifting entirely to a gross curb weight tax for all vehicles. The fourth power law states that the greater the axle load of a vehicle, the stress on the road caused by the motor vehicle increases in proportion to the fourth power of the axle load. Meaning heavier EVs cough hummer, are doing x^4 damage over my already heavy car.

Capturing vehicle taxes by weight should incentivize lighter vehicles, and therefore, less tire wear.

richjdsmith··on Have you been to the library lately?
My local small-town library has become a pseudo homeless shelter. It’s exactly as this article describes. Often I’ll go in and there will be a local homeless person muttering in the corner.

That has certainly dissuaded me from going regularly.

richjdsmith··on Why do people drink so early at airports?
Because if I'm between legs of a 12-24 hour travel day, and I started +/-6 time zones away, I don't care what time of day it is where I am when I ask for a glass of bourbon.
richjdsmith··on The Windows 11 Trash Party
Windows 11 has made me hate my computer. I have a top end surface book pro and it lags every day. Things like opening the calculator or file explorer are a test of patience and my patience has been tested daily. I loathe windows 11 and regret the day I installed it.
richjdsmith··on Anxiety Strikes $8T Mortgage-Debt Market After SVB Collapse
There’s a great book on this subject.

Lords of East Money by Christopher Leonard

richjdsmith··on Anxiety Strikes $8T Mortgage-Debt Market After SVB Collapse
There would absolutely still be mortgage lenders without artificially low federal funds.

I manage a fund in Canada that does exactly that. We have a pool of investors, and lend out on mortgages only. Primarily in markets larger institutions won’t touch.

richjdsmith··on The U.S. cannot afford to turn against immigration
Canada currently feels more divided today than anytime in my life. I am not sure it is the best option to point at. I am not sure the source, however the data is starting to show that the housing issue is in fact a direct result of more immigration, so we may see a significant shift towards less immigration in the coming years.
