richieb··on Ageism
Experience is no substitute for competence..
richieb··on The Social Network Bust: What I learned from my job interview with Facebook
The reason I work on my own projects because I enjoy doing them. Why does everything have to be for "structured learning"? I bet you learn and discover more just randomly fiddling around....
richieb··on Why read books if we can’t remember what’s in them?
Silly.... If you can't remember what you had for lunch last Monday, why eat?
richieb··on The Ironic Truth About Stupid People
Keep in mind that everyone is a Dilbert at something....
richieb··on Ask HN: What's Your Story?
FORTRAN IV and IBM/360 :)
richieb··on Some tidbits from Joel Spolsky's talk last night on recruiting programmers
Bank in the 90s I worked for a small derivative shop in NYC. The lowest bonus we ever got was 100% of annual salary. This was not a boring project either - we had a network of Suns and all code was written in Eiffel and C.
richieb··on Schwarzenegger: Public Pensions and Our Fiscal Future
Really it is the private sector employees that make much less than public employees. Except of course the CEOs and other way over paid executives.....
richieb··on The Case for $320,000 Teachers
Perhaps we should ask the students and student parents? After all the parents are paying the bill (even when it's indirect via taxes)
richieb··on Who Can Name the Bigger Number?
Aleph Null?
richieb··on Ask HN: What were your naivetés in your twenties?
Here are my rules:

1. Don't worry, be happy. 2. If you don't use it, you loose it. 3. Take some chances

richieb··on Humans: Why They Triumphed
Frankly, dinosaurs were much more successful as a species. They were around for about 200 million years. Humans have been around barely 20 million years and time during which civilization existed is even smaller (5000 years?).

Hardly a triumph.

richieb··on Real geeks die early
a)estimate right when given the chance,

First look up the definition of "estimate".

Second the shorter the estimate the more accurate it will be. So, I a developer says I can do this in a day that's probably mostly right.

But if he says that he can build something in 3 months, that's most definitely wrong.

richieb··on Why MBAs are Going East
Wahoo!!!
richieb··on What do we need health insurers for anyway?
A lot the research that goes into truly innovative treatments is already funded by the government. See what NIH pays for. The big companies look for stuff that they can market and sell fast (eg. Viagra in new rainbow color). In a lot of the pharmaceutical companies spent more on marketing than research.

Especially for things that are not profitable (eg. flu shots, or malaria vaccine).

richieb··on Keep Distractions From Hijacking Your Time
Totally generic article, does not really say anything.
richieb··on How a job is created
Cringley had a similar article few days ago: http://www.cringely.com/2010/02/the-cringely-2010-not-in-sil...
richieb··on Automated to Death?
And how many possible combination were there to try? Even then this would cover just one class of errors.

Automated tests are great (I use them all the time). But not all situations can be covered in a test - specially when there is concurrency involved.

richieb··on Automated to Death?
Not really. As Dijistra said: "Testing only proves existence of errors, not their absense."
richieb··on How to recognise a good programmer (2007)
"Why did you wait until Uni to learn to program?"

Because at that time computers took entire floor of building and costs millions of dollars. By the time I got my hands on Apple II I was in graduate school...

richieb··on Finding A Job You'll Love: Recruiters
I've been a programmer for over 30 years and only one of my jobs was found via a recruiter. All others were via connections..
richieb··on Forty Years of 'Civilisation'
Let's see: Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, john Coltrane... to name just a few that will be talked about and listened to 100 years from now....

richieb··on The Power That is GNU Emacs
Emacs is an operating system, cleverly disguised as an editor.....
richieb··on Announcing HackStars
One problem is that they will not get good developers. According to Joel Spolsky, good developers never look for jobs (they re always working), so they are not likely to work for free...
