ribs··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
It’s reasonable to cast doubt upon the fitness of ideas based on their sources, particularly when the ideas are hard to adjudicate. It reasonable to filter what one engages with partially based on the sources.

It would be foolish to ignore sources.

ribs··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
Yeah, I did too. But it doesn’t mean we’re, like, hanging out with ‘em

Although perhaps we are excessively online

ribs··on Sex, AI, and the Apocalypse
The argument was fairly specific: there is a groupthink involved, and so the enterprise is suspect.
ribs··on LLMs as a Cognitive Virus
The prevalence of LLM-generated text masquerading as otherwise and incorporated into a significant fraction of all published text distinguishes this info-organism from all others.

ribs··on Cursor 0day: When Full Disclosure Becomes the Only Protection Left
I think you’ve got it wrong; no malicious payload need be on your box already. That’s not what the article says.
ribs··on We charge $10k a week to delete AI-generated code
I wonder how you do it when faced with what are undoubtedly poor functional, regression, and unit test coverages.
ribs··on Swedish parliament abolishes permanent residence visas for migrants
Hold on hold on hold on, tell me about Finnish lunches, as from searching they sound pretty innocuous. (Surströmming I know of, no questions there)
ribs··on God sleeps in the minerals
One of my favorite topics and a hobby finally makes it to Hacker News

<swoon>

Fine mineral specimens are the most surprising things on earth. Such regularity and color! It reminds you that every atom of an element, every molecule of a compound is exactly the same (caveat energy states), and the laws of physics and chemistry don't change. That's how these stunningly bright and REGULAR forms develop - trillions of atoms or molecules all falling into line.

ribs··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
I had a route around San Francisco that I would visit, and all the places on the route were where there were good blackberry bushes. I’d take a bucket. Around Golden Gate Park and the Inner Sunset mostly, heading down into the Forest Hills area as well. I did that for a few years. Would pick up some plums along the way as well.

Now on the other side of the Bay I have a couple spots, not as dense a network. About an hour away there are masses.

ribs··on Ask HN: Any interesting niche hobbies?
I want to hear more
ribs··on Taste in the age of AI and LLMs
That deciding between 1000 things is a lot of effort is so clear that I must wonder if the one you’re responding to was being ironic.
ribs··on Why Doesn't Anybody Realize We're Going Back to the Moon?
I know we're not really supposed to say stuff like this on HN, but: hells to the yeah
ribs··on Cheese Crystals (2019)
Right about the calcium lactate crystals, though wrong about lactic acid causing muscle pain; this has been debunked.
ribs··on What happened to Apple's legendary attention to detail?
Apple software has gone so bad in the last decade or so. UI problems abound - the lack of default buttons that fire when you hit enter makes me ill. THIS USED TO BE IN THE APPLE USER INTERFACE GUIDELINES. Does anybody remember that big binder that was ultra-important for Mac developers? Well if anyone still has a copy they probably have it on a bookshelf where it looks nice on Zoom.

And then there's the bugs. What software is more consistently buggy than Apple software?

ribs··on I Bought $250k Worth of Physical Nickels
I feel like I must be telling everyone something they already know…please tell me I am
ribs··on I Bought $250k Worth of Physical Nickels
The one account I know that follows this account is @chasedownloads aka Chase Passive Income, which is a parody of a certain kind of entrepreneur, very much not real.

This is not real. No one associated with this account (or, probably, any account) has bought these nickels.

ribs··on Locality of Behaviour (2020)
One would like to see the word “modularity” somewhere here.
ribs··on Baby Steps into Genetic Programming
Last I checked, genetic programming wasn’t promising, and I’m a little surprised to see people paying attention to it here.

OTOH that was similar to what people were saying about hidden layers, so YMMV

ribs··on My stupid noise journey (2023)
For me the problem is mainly when trying to sleep, specifically, at Burning Man, where it can be very difficult. I used foam earplugs for years, but they leave something to be desired.

The AirPods Max…get them on my ears correctly, and I’m in a forest. It’s uncanny. It was the most profound alteration to my experience there in years.

ribs··on The Mac Is a Power Tool
It’s a mass-market computer used by millions of people who don’t want to shoot themselves in the foot. People can be tricked into things, perhaps like turning off a “Bypass Mode”-like switch. I think this is a hard problem.
ribs··on DARPA funding "revolutionary" optimizing compiler technology [pdf]
Their RFP notes that it’s hard to optimize code to run on the zillion possible combinations of CPUs, GPUs, TPUs, FPGAs, ASICs, SoCs, and so seeks revolutionary new compiler technology that will take your program, your target hardware alphabet soup combination, and output an executable optimized for that environment.

ribs··on For Brilliant Color: Packaging the First LSD Blotter
Agreed. Inspired by your comment, I did a Google map search, and there appear to be no places currently sporting that name, though there was a bagel shop in Troy NY with it, closed down in 2019.

So, you know, there is a vacuum waiting to be filled. Could be filled by a head shop, could be by anything…
