rhubarbquid··on Google crawler tricked into performing SQL injection attacks
> The only solution is to not be vulnerable to SQL injection attacks.

If this is your reason for fixing SQL injection vulnerabilities, you're doing something wrong.

rhubarbquid··on Why putting SSH on another port than 22 is bad idea
I can't say for sure it would help in any useful way, but it won't reduce your security to run ssh on port 1023.
rhubarbquid··on Why putting SSH on another port than 22 is bad idea
Right, adding obscurity doesn't decrease security. It might help... worst case it does nothing.
rhubarbquid··on Why I’m Going Back To Capturing Credit Cards Upfront
Thanks for the clarification, interesting article, and sorry for being a jerk about your terminology. Airing my opinion on the term isn't a useful contribution to the discussion.
rhubarbquid··on Why I’m Going Back To Capturing Credit Cards Upfront
Fair enough.
rhubarbquid··on Why I’m Going Back To Capturing Credit Cards Upfront
That sort of marketing-speak made up word just makes my skin crawl. I don't see how it's any more expressive than "signing up new users". At least he calls them "users" and not "consumers"...

It didn't really stop me from reading the article, I kept going after I finished cringing.

rhubarbquid··on Why I’m Going Back To Capturing Credit Cards Upfront
-He lost me at the phrase "onboard new users"- ;-)

edit: I rescind my comment, I'm not adding anything useful to the discussion here. I still hate the term, but I guess there's not anything better.

rhubarbquid··on CryptoSeal (YC S11) Shutting Down Private VPN
If you're a non-US company with US customers, I don't think you're technically exporting anything (unless it's code that was written in the US and then moved out of the country).

(I'm also not a lawyer)

rhubarbquid··on The San Francisco Exodus
You say that like San Francisco is crime free while the whole Easy Bay has a high crime rate...
rhubarbquid··on Bitcoin accidentally solved my startup's international banking problem
Could you describe the countermeasures without giving away the scheme?
rhubarbquid··on Perl 5 + Perl 6 = Perl 11
What do you mean "can't use 6"? Perl 6 is using 6...
rhubarbquid··on Android AOSP maintainer quits
That's one of the big problems: "open" can mean vastly different things to different people and in different contexts.
rhubarbquid··on “Please let me know if I should stop developing apps for Google Products”
I don't know how things work in India, but in the US you would definitely want to set up some sort of business entity, even if it's just you for a number of reasons. Is it hard to form a business there, and would doing so help you accept payments? Could you sell it to customers who are in India to get things started?
rhubarbquid··on “Please let me know if I should stop developing apps for Google Products”
But if you have a contract, you can at least expect the product to exist for the term of the contract.
rhubarbquid··on Google will pay for free wireless in S.F. parks
You need a "WiFi modem" to use it effectively inside a building.

rhubarbquid··on Google will pay for free wireless in S.F. parks
It seems most likely the motivation here is to make sure all of the Googlers in SF are able to be online and thus able to work from more places. Many of Google's benefits are about making sure employees never have to stop working...
rhubarbquid··on Don't talk to the police [video]
I've heard both that you should not answer for fear of incriminating yourself, and that you should answer because not knowing how fast you're going means you're negligent and that's also a crime. (I'm neither a lawyer nor know which is the better choice)
rhubarbquid··on First official Brain-Computer Interface journal coming in January 2014
What makes it "official"?
rhubarbquid··on Poll: Which RSS reader have you switched to?
I was hoping that was the case for me, but their mobile version is nearly useless to me. I want a compact view of titles that I can expand to read what I want, since I really only want to read about 50% of the posts in my feeds.

With The Old Reader, I get to either choose between having everything expended or a list view that only shows the first 3 or 4 words of the title on my phone.

No offense meant to The Old Reader folks, they're not obliged to please me... I'm just venting... and hoping what I want actually exists :)

rhubarbquid··on Why so many jobs are crappy
> The work must be enjoyable for self before it help others.

The garbage man who doesn't enjoy carrying your trash away still helps you get rid of your trash. The truck driver who doesn't enjoy driving still gets your food to the store...

Sure there are a lot of jobs that people can do better if they enjoy them, but that's certainly not all of them.

Getting to have a job you enjoy is a luxury that most people in the world don't have.

rhubarbquid··on Ask HN: What companies have the best Paid Time off Policy?
Craigslist offers 4 weeks PTO per year. They're hardly the typical American company though.
rhubarbquid··on Facebook's e-mail debacle: One 'bug' fix, but rollback impossible
It's a metaphor. She's saying they can't undo the damage they've already done, not that they can't literally change the code (or email addresses) back.
rhubarbquid··on Facebook's e-mail debacle: One 'bug' fix, but rollback impossible
She didn't say they didn't have a rollback plan, she was saying there's no way to undo the damage they've already done. She's not privy to their internal plans, it was a metaphor.

Rolling back the change won't get people's time or email back, or undo the damage to facebook's reputation.

rhubarbquid··on Facebook's e-mail debacle: One 'bug' fix, but rollback impossible
"move fast and break things"
rhubarbquid··on Cisco’s cloud vision: Mandatory, monetized, and killed at their discretion
> difficulty of pushing out firmware updates

They've obviously already solved that problem... this article is about an update that was automatically installed. It wasn't part of a "cloud service" when they bought it.

rhubarbquid··on Yadifa, new name server by .eu
> couldn't some core code be shared between all these projects

There are also advantages to having independent implementations for such crucial software. A fatal flaw that no one caught in one implementation may not take out the whole system.

rhubarbquid··on GMail: designer arrogance and the cult of minimalism
You can switch from icons to text labels in the settings.
rhubarbquid··on AnyWall: an iOS geolocation app powered by Parse complete with tutorial
Facebook makes a trademark claim on the word "Wall". While I personally think that's ridiculous, I'm betting they're not going to be happy with that name.
rhubarbquid··on Looking for constructive criticism on our Pingdom Killing Start-up
Wow, that's really confusing terminology. I would never have guessed that a "check" corresponded to a url or port.

Why do you hide the link to pricing info in the "Features" section? My first question about any product is "How much will it cost me?".

The back button doesn't work in either browser I tried (Chrome and Safari). Click Features, then click Our Customers, then hit back. The page scrolls up about 2 pixels.
