rholdy··on The hacker's guide to acquiring the first 1,000 users: Twitter
Did you even read the article? He mentions emailing friends and family as a good place to start but anyone who has actually tried to market an app, or a brand or anything else has realized that leveraging your personal network will only get you so far. OP then suggests you use twitter to find people who are posting on the internet that they have a problem your product might be able to solve. That sounds like a bad idea to you?

Also, listing a couple companies that became successful without using tools that didn't exist when they started doesn't prove anything. That is like saying "Union Pacific, GE, Ford and PacBell all became astronomical successes without using the internet, so you shouldn't use the internet either."

There is no reason to handicap yourself when trying to get off the ground.

rholdy··on Show HN: "Who is hiring" mapped
Really neat tool. Thanks for building and sharing this.
rholdy··on Ask HN: Most regrettable design decision in computer industry?
Since when has CAPTCHA stopped spam?
rholdy··on Scribd Challenges Amazon and Apple With ‘Netflix for Books’
I saw an article about a similar company recently and, like this one, I was still left with an important unanswered question.

How is this service better than a library card?

rholdy··on Ask HN: Most regrettable design decision in computer industry?
CAPTCHA
rholdy··on Diablo 3 to permanently remove its auction houses in March 2014
Also, the gear progression is very linear. On every gear slot you are looking for the same affixes.
rholdy··on Diablo 3 to permanently remove its auction houses in March 2014
I was among the many D2 fans that felt let down by Diablo 3. I never went so far as to grab a pitchfork like some other people, but the auction house really sucked the fun out of the game.

Honestly, I'm very proud of Blizzard for making this decision. I never expected them to do something this drastic, but ultimately, it is what is best for the game.

rholdy··on Ask HN: What will happen when everybody uses an ad blocker?
People who create AdBlock software will sell out and strike deals with major advertisers to let certain ads through.
rholdy··on Why Aren't Schools Grouping Kids By Intelligence Level?
Lets assume that a school can properly separate kids based on intelligence, (which they can't) and that separating kids based on intelligence is a good idea (which it isn't). You will still run into a couple problems if you wanted to try something like this:

1) Kids that don't make it into the "Smart" class will think they are stupid. That is probably one of the worst things you can do to a kid.

2) Having their Kids in the "Smart" class will be much more important to the parents of borderline kids than anyone else. If a school is politically pressured into putting a kid into the "Smart" class that doesn't belong (and this will happen all the time), and that kid struggles to keep up, he's going to feel like he's stupid (see #1).

3) Kids look for any opportunity they can to bully each other. Doing something like this would make it really easy for them to identify which kids to bully because you're defining two different social classes for them. Whichever is larger will bully the other.

PS. Don't call kids dullards.

rholdy··on Ask HN: What is the stupidest startup idea you ever had/heard?
Read about a startup that recently launched that was claiming to be "Netflix for Books." We already have that. Its called a Library.

Either that one, or the guy selling fart scented candles on Shark Tank.

rholdy··on Over 1,200 Hackers Are Attending MHacks
Looks like an awesome event. I'm excited to see what comes of it.
rholdy··on On being homeless to fund a startup and dealing with the secret service
I've been following this story for a while. I admire the hustle and drive this guy shows. He's obviously committed to making something cool.

The fact that this, and similar stories about this same guy and website have been making the rounds for a couple months is pretty neat. I don't think he planned on his story becoming viral when he was sleeping in a church parking lot, but I think that is a pretty cool, if unintended tertiary benefit.

The story makes a great headline, and that has generated some buzz for the company. Good for them. I hope it works out. I signed up for the beta.
