There's nothing weird about the obsession. It's the most technically impresive format so far.

Could you provide some sources for the true facts you're asserting?
rhn_mk1··on US universities need to stop elitist discrimination that Europe abandoned
[Citation needed]. Europe is not some monolithic thing. The education systems between the UK, Germany and Russia differ a lot in how early people have to make decisions about their lives, and how stratified the student classes are.

It requires the clipboard API. Puzzling decision, given that native pasting worked before, but here we are.

> what do you like about XMPP?

- plenty of fast native clients

- server resource usage

- simplicity of the protocol, especially the encryption

rhn_mk1··on Ask HN: Anyone using proportional fonts for coding?
You get in trouble only if you see hanging indentations:

Foo(Bar(...), baz)

But they are not required for a happy life:

Foo( Bar(...), baz, )

It's not PEP8, but it works, and it does not depend on the font at all. 80 columns is bollocks in any case, but with this style, width is usually even reduced.

Alternatively, Elastic Tabstops solves this, but it's supported by approximately no one.

I don't think diagrams are meant to be copy-pasted from a lot, so I'm not worried about that.

For editing, I'd just use a conversion tool, and edit it in a fixed-width editor rather than directly in code. Yes, it's an extra tool, but I don't think it's that outlandish to edit pictures in a tool for editing pictures.

rhn_mk1··on Ask HN: Anyone using proportional fonts for coding?
They preclude ASCII, but not Unicode diagrams.

Unicode block characters have constant width.

Unicode also contains fixed-width equivalents to ASCII letters: abc. Just add 0xFEE0 to the code point.

And 0x3000 is an ideographic space, with the same width.

rhn_mk1··on VyOS From Scratch – Edition 1 (set up your own router)
The idea of VyOS is awesome: have your configuration all in one place, apply it atomically.

After using it for several years, the implementation is clearly lacking. It seems that the maintainers are overloaded, because contributions to fix minor issues, or add config options get ignored in my experience. As a result, the configuration is missing some nice options in the IPv6 space (so-called tethering), and it's still using iptables for packet filtering. It's also rather hard to roll your own, with your own modules: the module system is rather hard to use.

Not to mention the lack of interest to roll out a version for ARM.

My next router will be based on NixOS, and will attempt to recreate the awesome UI of VyOS.

rhn_mk1··on AI researcher Geoffrey Hinton thinks AI has or will have emotions
Computers do have sensors already. Current LLMs have a very limited amount of sensors (basically they receive one token at a time), but it's there.
rhn_mk1··on AI researcher Geoffrey Hinton thinks AI has or will have emotions
Atoms are just chemistry and physics! They don't get scared, they don't get happy, they don't get sad, they just run DNA!

An arrangement of atoms does not have a consciousness that feels emotions. Sure, it can replicate, but that does not imply consciousness.

rhn_mk1··on Climate records tumble, leaving Earth in uncharted territory – scientists
It's the clear tension of keeping our way of life now versus being able to keep parts of it in the future.

Clearly, some people care about the now more than the future.

rhn_mk1··on JPEG XL: How it started, how it’s going
IIRC, JPEG XL beats avif on high-quality images, and avif is better on low quality. For typical vieo encoding, you don't care about perfection that much.

rhn_mk1··on Installing Debian bookworm without systemd
As someone who had to mess with init scripts for a couple of distros for someone who requested it, this was not far from my idea of pure anti-fun.

Every distro did init scripts in different, exciting ways, so I had to start over from reading the not-inconsequential docs for each one. The init systems come with some high-level helpers, but only if you want to use the shell, which is very unfun in its own right.

And then another click away when you want to go back to normal.

Every time you do it.

It's not a matter of clicking, it's a matter of having extra steps in an already diverging workflow.

rhn_mk1··on Cities are ending fares on transit. Here’s why
Except when public transit doesn't have to run on regular roads. Metro, trains, trams. Those win compared to cars a lot of the time.

Dedicated bus lanes don't run on regular roads, either.

Public standard is substandard when it's badly run, and not because it's public transit. People who have a car may still decide that the costs of running it are greater than the costs of using public transit.

Perhaps you're processing confidential data/communications.

The "uncompromised security" line suggests that the product is targeted at this group. The Intel CPU shows that it's actually aimed at people "just running Linux on a desktop anyway".

rhn_mk1··on Finland introduces the world’s first phone-free tourist island
I'm not so sure about something unusual becoming an empty fad. Medieval fairs are enclaves of the different, and yet you don't see every event turning into a medieval fair to dilute the idea.

A designated place matters for the experience: you can expect that the door frames and ceilings will be adjusted to accommodate your hats (i.e. no one will require a phone from you to do basic things).

You may also expect other people to already be in the same mental space as you, or learning to see the world from a new perspective at the same time as you are.

rhn_mk1··on Finland introduces the world’s first phone-free tourist island
Think of it this way: you can wear a silly hat anywhere you want. What effect would it have on silly hat population if you explicitly invited people to wear silly hats on your island?
rhn_mk1··on Electric bike, stupid love of my life
It requires looking farther back into where the energy comes from. Humans are rather inefficient at converting calories in carbohydrates into movement. Electric motors are comparatively better at turning electric potential energy stored in batteries to kinetic energy.

Keep going this way and you'll eventually reach the efficiency of converting solar power to movement, which is again directly comparable, and electrical systems win compared to biological systems.
