rhetocj23··on Everyone in Seattle hates AI
Yes. The people who are amazed with AI were never that good at a particular subject area in the first place - I dont care who you are. You were not good enough - how do I know this? Well I know economics, corporate finance, accounting et al very deeply. Ive engaged with LLMS for years now and still they cannot get below the surface level and are not improving further than this.

Its easy to recall information, but something entirely different to do something with that information. Which is what those subject ares are all about - taking something (like a theory) and applying it in a disciplined manner given the context.

Thats not to diminish what LLMs can do. But lets get real.

rhetocj23··on Apple to beat Samsung in smartphone shipments for first time in 14 years
Apple makes you feel something for many people. Many on here dont get it.
rhetocj23··on Why Sam Altman Won't Be on the Hook for OpenAI's Spending Spree
Im admittedly bearish on LLMS but believe there are benefits to be exploited in the underlying technology. I have personally found a way to utilise it as an input to produce a superior user experience within a product than what exists for the market I am targeting.

I agree, its not intelligent. You have to accept that as a fundamental premise and build up from there to figure out where it makes sense to utilise the technology - oh and if you have to refer to the technology and make sure the user knows about it, youve already failed. The user frankly does not care nor do they need to know of its existence.

rhetocj23··on Why Sam Altman Won't Be on the Hook for OpenAI's Spending Spree
The issue is, as it stands, LLMs are going to become a commodity. Could that happen and OAI is still a valuable firm? Maybe. Do I personally think OpenAI has the product prowess to pull it off? Nah, I think they are overly-concentrated with technologists (same problem Google has). Apple is still king when it comes to figuring out the ideal form of the product the buyer desires.

Apple can take a future OSS model and produce the winning product. That truth would be very bitter for many to swallow. Cook maintaining good relations with China could be the thing that makes Apple topple everyone in the long-run.

rhetocj23··on Sam Altman's pants are on fire
I pity them. They are not as far ahead in life and understanding as they want to be or are supremely deluded.

I just wished the bozos actually replied to the post instead of hiding behind a button.

rhetocj23··on Sam Altman's pants are on fire
Something to note about this craze and Crypto is that the world is full of bozos who do not think deeply whatsoever.
rhetocj23··on Apple is crossing a Steve Jobs red line
The magic of Jobs is/was he truly was a self-starter and self-taught man; he had the rare mix of traits necessary to be a visionary.

Frankly I think Jobs saw Cook as a key operator to ensure the firms future survival and future growth; I'd imagine Jobs foresaw the tremendous impact the smartphone would have and all Cook had to do was be a shrewd operator as Apple had built such a huge advantage over competitors by the time he was dead.

I personally called it within my circle that when Friar was hired she was going to commit a tremendous blunder. It may have been innocent, but the trend is now reversing in regards to its mantlehold of mindshare of consumers.

Someone I know who has been an absolute staunch advocate of chatgpt, and has been for the best part of the past 1.5 years suddenly changed their tune earlier this week. That is my signal that things are turning south.

There will be a reprieve for some time, with increasing revenue. But eventually that will jam to a halt and all the doubts will intensify.

rhetocj23··on Apple is crossing a Steve Jobs red line
Much of life does frankly...
rhetocj23··on Apple is crossing a Steve Jobs red line
Correct. This is something that is becoming increasingly apparent with time.
rhetocj23··on Why Your Best Engineers Are Interviewing Elsewhere, CodeGood
Shh, people who think differently get shut out.

I agree massively btw, most orgs are so incredibly bloated its funny to observe.

rhetocj23··on How the richest man is boosting the British right
Why are you afraid to post this under your proper handle? lol
rhetocj23··on How the richest man is boosting the British right
The great irony is, come election time, the support for Labour will be stronger to prevent any chance of Reform gaining control of parliament.
rhetocj23··on Meta readies $25B bond sale as soaring AI costs trigger stock sell-off
The evolution of Meta/FB is quite interesting.

It started off seemingly innocent - the mission of connecting folks. However, there was no money in that.

Where is the money? Content production. What content generates a continuous growing stream of earnings? Content that appeals to the senses of all kinds - including selling a get rich fast dream to girls promoting their OF pages.

What you have is an environemnt that preys and feeds off of consumers who have a lack of discipline with their money and are easy to manipulate - providing a nice ROAS. This is Meta in a nutshell.

Zuck enjoys roll playing a roman emperor - I have no doubt behind the scenes he laughs at his contribution toward the declining tastes, standards and self control of individuals.

rhetocj23··on Meta readies $25B bond sale as soaring AI costs trigger stock sell-off
This is because put simply, at the core, humans are dumb. We are only intelligent to the extent we acquire knowledge and formalise it to understand the world and make rational decisions to ensure one is better off.

GIven that the majority do not possess this trait, the outcome is nothing but inevitable. The mistake Jobs made was assuming that what he thought about the world should ring true for everyone.

rhetocj23··on OpenAI thought to be preparing for $1T stock market float
Most of you are delusional on here re. valuation and talk about subjects you have zero clue about.
rhetocj23··on How AI gave me my voice back – an artist's review of Suno Studio
Well said man. Not surprising to hear this take from someone whos been involved in music production for many years.

I just listened to it myself and WTF - its awful. There is a reason why quality of music has diminished sharply since the Record Labels lost control.

rhetocj23··on OpenAI thought to be preparing for $1T stock market float
Lol investors are not stupid. If the books are awful the IPO will fail.
rhetocj23··on How OpenAI uses complex and circular deals to fuel its multibillion-dollar rise
Itll be worse. He is doing this for ego, not money from what I see.
rhetocj23··on How OpenAI uses complex and circular deals to fuel its multibillion-dollar rise
AGI isnt coming any time soon. The constraint on the progress toward it is R&D, and R&D requires an increase in high quality labour than what exists today.
rhetocj23··on OpenAI’s promise to stay in California helped clear the path for its IPO
You havent met anyone fella. I see your posts here all the time - full of bluster.
rhetocj23··on Microsoft seemingly just revealed that OpenAI lost $11.5B last quarter
Personally Im not surprised. Im bearish on the capabilities of LLMs given the amount invested, but, I also believe theres about 2 years left (of minimal progress relative to money invested) to go before things finally start to crater.
rhetocj23··on Microsoft seemingly just revealed that OpenAI lost $11.5B last quarter
I find it funny that people think OAI can enter the ad business and just compete easily with Google, given the years Google has had investing in research etc to build the behemoth it is today in the market for online advertising.

By the time OAI even figures it out, they will have run out of funding. All they can do now is prop up usage numbers to signal to investors that their market position is durable.

rhetocj23··on Microsoft seemingly just revealed that OpenAI lost $11.5B last quarter
Yes if their existing investors were seeing stuff that indicated they would create escape velocity, they would queue up to purchase more stock.
rhetocj23··on OpenAI’s promise to stay in California helped clear the path for its IPO
Not at all. When people say this statement about Jobs, it tells me how little they know about the man.

S Jobs was a clinical and clear communicator. Altman in comparison? Lmao.

rhetocj23··on OpenAI’s promise to stay in California helped clear the path for its IPO
Lol what? You need to do more research fella. Did it not ever occur to you that Jobs got the recording industry to dance to his tune to offer music for under a dollar? He did the same with the iPhone - smashing the control cellular network providers had over handset producers.

"This is the guy who had everyone here rooting for him when the OpenAI board tried to kick him out."

Finally... oh this is just funny. Who rooted for S Jobs when he was kicked out of Apple, and cheered for him on his return?

.....

rhetocj23··on AOL to be sold to Bending Spoons for $1.5B
"They buy up struggling companies with the aim to revitalise them, or otherwise recoup the cost of investment+ profit."

1) Nope, they are focused on taking advantage of customer lock-in to raise prices, while reducing operating expenses to increase cash flows. There may be some initial reinvestment to increase surplus of its users, before raising prices substantially. 2) "recoup the cost of investment+ profit"? Yeah lets see if that pans out. The acquisition price is assumed to be under a going-concern basis in perpetuity, if they muck things up with the choices they make the acquisitions have a limited life to increase and capture those cash flows to deliver a positive NPV investment. The demand for the firms products are not perfectly inelastic w.r.t to price.

rhetocj23··on AOL to be sold to Bending Spoons for $1.5B
Bending Spoons is a joke company that buys company with hopes to restructure them to meet some nonsensical financial numbers made up in an excel spreadsheet.
rhetocj23··on Nvidia takes $1B stake in Nokia
MSFT accelerated the invetiable.

There was just no way Nokia could match Apple on the OS who spent years prior to the idea of a smartphone making it a good match for the hardware of the time. And MSFT deservedly got punished for not investing in creating a better OS and Apple deservedly rewarded for doing so.

rhetocj23··on The next chapter of the Microsoft–OpenAI partnership
If anything, the main thing LLMs are showing is that the humans need to be pushed to up their game. And that desire to be better, I think, will yield an increase in supply of high-quality labour than what exists today. Ive personally witnessed so many 'so-so' people within firms who dont bring anything new to the table and focus on rent seeking expenditures (optics) who frankly deserve to be replaced by a machine.

E.g. I read all the time about gains from SWEs. But nobody questions how good of a SWE they even are. What proportion of SWEs can be deemed high quality?
