rhetocj23··on AI Pullback Has Officially Started
People have a bias to want to believe something works in all cases, when it seemingly offers benefits to them. Especially when there’s a sunk investment involved.
rhetocj23··on AI Pullback Has Officially Started
Imagine comparing a human fuck up to an AI one. Lol.
rhetocj23··on AI Pullback Has Officially Started
Time is ticking and running out. You do realise future numbers have to be discounted heavily for the required rate of return given the risk, right?

This means the free cash flow to the firm OAI generates will have to be huge, given the negative cash outflows to date.

rhetocj23··on Show HN: We tried to build a job board that isn't awful
"because every company is busy paying the Indeeds/Linkedins of the world"

The reason why is because they possess significant competitive advantages.

Im actually working on something in this space and am building out competitive advantages with government backing that'll make LinkedIn and Indeed an inferior offering in my country.

If youre going to enter a market with established incumbents, you wont go very far without a lot of strategic-thinking.

rhetocj23··on Tell HN: OpenAI now requires ID verification and won't refund API credits
This - and in future ensure any purchases are made on a credit card not debit card.
rhetocj23··on 'Attention is all you need' coauthor says he's 'sick' of transformers
"Humans hallucinate too"

No they dont. Humans also know when they are pretending to know what they are talking about - put said people against the wall and they will freely admit they have no idea what the buzzwords they are saying mean.

Machines possess no such characteristic.

Most M&A's are value destructive.
rhetocj23··on OpenAI acquires Sky.app
Whats the big deal? If the management at Apple thought they were important and critical to Apples future, they wouldve made it work. The reality is, they dont believe this to be the case.
rhetocj23··on Trump pardons convicted Binance founder
Its difficult to digest lol. Im from Europe but damn I feel the Americans - its legit embarrassing to watch.
rhetocj23··on OpenAI acquires Sky.app
Lol, I pay no mind who post stuff like that. They are clueless.
rhetocj23··on AI Slop is taking over Spotify
Lol, you are not someone worth debating with. Stick to your biases and continue producing music that no one else cares about. Cool.

Just dont share it with the rest of us who actually have taste.

Superhuman my arse.

Yes the treasury rate is the base of all interest rates.

"This is the most profoundly idiotic sentiment to ever come out of the AI discourse. "

Man the hubris of folks like you - its going to be epic when things inevitably fall apart at the seams.

rhetocj23··on Meta is axing 600 roles across its AI division
I havent seen a single answer that isnt surface level stuff.
rhetocj23··on Meta is axing 600 roles across its AI division
THe great irony and greed of shareholders is, if this all blows up, they will demand more cash return in the form of dividends and stock buy backs. If that doesnt happen the stock price will get crushed as Meta already experienced back in 2022.
rhetocj23··on Meta is axing 600 roles across its AI division
"You can't innovate without taking career-ending risks."

Its not the job of employees to bear this burden - if you have visionary leadership at the helm, they should be the ones absorbing this pressure. And thats what is missing.

The reality is folks like Zuck were never visionaries. Lets not derail the thread but a) he stole the idea for facebook b) the continued success of Meta comes from its numerous acquisitions and copying its competitors, and not from organic product innovation. Zuckerberg and Musk share a lot more in common than both would like to admit.

rhetocj23··on Meta is axing 600 roles across its AI division
The real question is, how/why did they over-hire in the first place?
rhetocj23··on Meta is axing 600 roles across its AI division
The thing that many, so called smart people, dont realise is that leadership and vision are incredibly scarce traits.

Pure technologists and MBA folks dont have a visionary bone in their body. I always find the Steve Jobs criticism re. his technical contributions hilarious. That wasnt his job. Its much easier to execute on the technical stuff, when theres someone there who is leading the charge on the vision.

rhetocj23··on Why companies are lying about mass layoffs
"But we feel like we are stuck."

The great illusion/trap that forces you to continue being a productive asset until you are used up.

The explanation behind the acquisition of Statsig is so obvious.

OAI is taking a Meta-old-school approach towards building products. Did it work at Meta? Nah, they ended up acquiring since their internal efforts were not preferred by the users in the market.

My use of LLMs has declined not increased. Some of us are way ahead of the curve of understanding what these things can and cant do, and will not do due to fundamental issues the technology faces.
rhetocj23··on AI Slop is taking over Spotify
I did not feel anything when listening to the song. The purpose of music is to move oneself, particularly emotionally.

As an example to represent the point - this is known to put many on the verge of tears/in a stream of tears: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxNbZLh0PaA&list=RDWxNbZLh0P...

rhetocj23··on Today is when the Amazon brain drain sent AWS down the spout
The thing is, the brand is toxic. They can offer all the money they want, but no employee has any pride in working for them. So they produce the bare minimum to get their salary - and I applaud them.
rhetocj23··on Today is when the Amazon brain drain sent AWS down the spout
Doesn’t an increasing LLM centric code base only compound this problem? Under the assumption that people are lazily screening LLM’s output when using them
rhetocj23··on AI Slop is taking over Spotify
My personal consumption of YT has dropped pretty sharply - I only go on there for specific content that I personally pick out myself. The recommendations have become really bad progressively IME over the past 2 years.
rhetocj23··on AI Slop is taking over Spotify
And theres nothing wrong with that. The issue is people like Altman thinking creativity et al is just a formulaic mish-mash of what exists and is not as difficult. Like yeah ok mate....
