rharb··on Ghostty 1.0
Congratulations on making it to the launch!

I really appreciate the levelheadedness of your responses regarding Ghostty, and how clear you are to be speaking positively for your thing instead of negatively about anyone else's.

Going to build it at lunch today and give it a shot :)

rharb··on Ask HN: What ist your AdBlock strategy?
Ublock origin on desktop browsers.

Pihole with the default ad list and additional ones to block some social media sites.

Then Pihole is configured to use Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 for families, and I use the adult+malware filter.

I’ve got WireGuard running on the pihole server to make this all available for mobile devices when out and about.

rharb··on Tibia (1997) is one of the earliest and longest-running MMORPGs
That’s fascinating, I think I’ve used your software when I was a kid. The one that edited the window title?
rharb··on Ask HN: Has the iPad Won the Tablet Wars?
I use my iPad as a second display for the laptop when portable, it's surprisingly useful.

It's also kind of nice for keeping a game of baseball or something going on while sharing audio output with the main laptop, there's almost no display lag.

rharb··on Career advice nobody gave me: Never ignore a recruiter
Just today I responded to a recruiter who directly emailed me "because my LinkedIn bio looked promising", asking: 1) How he got my email address, since it is not affiliated with my LinkedIn profile (uses my work email and only contains information about my current position) 2) That I wasn't interested, thanking him for his time

He responded, seemingly offended, that I "have a Gmail account, a very public account" that his "team of Search Engineers" found.

rharb··on Ask HN: What do you do to jump start your brain in the morning?
You make an interesting point that I hadn't thought of. I haven't had alcohol since I switched to this schedule (right after the holidays).

Plus, since I'm not eating after 8 and I still eat breakfast (with other kid) at 8, I'm in this sort of accidental intermittent fasting mode. I wonder how much that is contributing.

rharb··on Ask HN: What do you do to jump start your brain in the morning?
Yeah - I've wanted to be more of a morning person for a while. Always envious of my friends that have no issues getting up at 5 or 5:30 to run or work out before sitting down to work. I am hoping that I can shift to something like that after the baby is sleeping a little better and keep the habit.
rharb··on Ask HN: What do you do to jump start your brain in the morning?
I’m currently sleeping from 8pm to 4am to help out with a newborn baby.

I’ve found that the best thing I can do to consistently be ‘on’ right at 4 is to set my bedtime, not my awake time. I’m always in bed at 8 whether I think I’ll need 8 hours of sleep or not - this has allowed me to more consistently get something done right away outside of whenever the baby’s got me busy.

You’re reading lowercase Q as G.
rharb··on Chess.com vs. Lichess
It doesn’t. Especially in this case, because lichess doesn’t even use elo ratings. It’s a different rating system altogether.

rharb··on Hacking Ham Radio for Texting
Ham bands are pretty small. Like the two most popular HF bands are only 300-350 kHz and not all of them are allocated for voice.
rharb··on Making life easier for newcomers to the .NET ecosystem
The dotnet CLI has the means for creating and maintaining solution files as well, for example:

`dotnet new sln

dotnet new console --output folder1/folder2/myapp

dotnet sln add folder1/folder2/myapp`

will result in something more like the new project experience from Visual Studio.

rharb··on Walmart unveils low-price analog insulin amid rising diabetes drug costs
Can't speak to the parent but vials per time can both change per person and between people.

My wife requires quite a bit more insulin while pregnant for example - she had to make changes to her pump's settings while in the hospital to accomodate it.

rharb··on Useless Windows 10 Features
You can actually just grab the same window and make a corresponding "up-down-up" movement and it'll bring everything back. On personal machines I turn it off but if I'm doing something for someone else, this is a good thing to know.
rharb··on jQuery CDN having SSL issues
Potentially related to the Chrome 66 update and Symantec stuff?
rharb··on Ask HN: What's your relationship with coffee?
I was drinking a lot (4-5 cups a day, usually crammed into the morning) when we had a Keurig in the office. Caused a bunch of heartburn during any particularly stressful weeks.

I've cut back to a max of two cups a day, and feel a lot better. I also don't feel like I need to drink coffee on the weekends to repel a headache until Mondays now.

rharb··on San Francisco Is Preparing for Life After This Tech Boom
It is a percentage of your wage, but they have pretty tight lower and upper bounds on it. Where I'm at in Ohio, it's one-half of your average weekly wage, but also constrained within $118-$435 pre-tax.
rharb··on IoT, 4K, virtual reality signal a critical need for broadband speed
Unbalanced is a nice way to put it :)

Our home line is 110/3.5 - if a service can serve content faster than 110 Mbit/s we are limited by the rate at which we can upload the TCP ACK, and not by the download limit on our connection.

Another good anecdote: Netflix has been cited as using 9.5% of the internet's upstream traffic on ACK alone. (source: http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/11/netfli...)
