rgreekguy··on Ask HN: How do you remember to keep all your devices charged?
I am taken aback by the amount of devices you two people seem to have, honestly.

For me I just... use them. And I have a tendency to not forget such things. The unused ones will lose their charge over time, indeed.

My phone I use. My old phone, that I use as GPS, I have to remember to charge before I need it.

My laptop I use all day, my previous laptop has no battery anymore.

My iPad Mini has got the short stick some times, to be honest, because it is mainly a secondary device. I have it always with me, but I rarely use it outside the house. And in the house it's not the top device, either.

The Steam Deck I use throughout the week, so I see its charge. But now I used it again the day before yesterday after half a year, or something. It happens, no need to have it charged in the meantime, frankly. Same for my controller. The little Anbernic handheld faces a similar fate.

Wireless keyboards I do not possess currently, and the one wireless mouse I have takes an AA battery, and is Logitech, 2-year battery, no worries.

rgreekguy··on Ask HN: How has your experience been with iOS 26?
I updated my iPhone 15 Pro yesterday. The only performance issue I noticed is when making a new wallpaper, with the "Dynamic iOS 26" wallpaper. It was lagging like crazy, it even froze at some point, and the phone got very hot. I have a feeling it hit the battery like a truck, too, but we'll see in time if it was just one incident or what. Running full animations and graphics, and glass icons, no performance issues.

Just managed to click update on my iPad Mini 6th gen, we'll see how that goes. The M1 Air will have to wait some more.

rgreekguy··on The year is 2025 and Apple still hasn't updated their contacts app since 2010
Apple generally has issues with multiple languages. (See Siri <=> phone language)

Because my phone is in a different language than the names of my contacts, I get no sorting at all.

No other gripes I can think of, but I do not use it that much.

rgreekguy··on Australia asks GitHub if it's a dangerous social network
Being owned by Microsoft, it is a fair thing to ask.
rgreekguy··on You can now upgrade a retro Casio watch with Bluetooth, step tracking, and games
I saw this article the other day, Bluetooth and step tracking is already a thing, at least to some G-Shock watches, much to my surprise.
rgreekguy··on I uncovered an ACPI bug in my Dell Inspiron 5567. It was plaguing me for 8 years
I don't know, I had my M1 Air reboot once because I had the wild idea to close the lid while it was charging. Usually only one of the two is happening. But a friend that has been around MacBooks for longer told me they do it. Hence my comment.

Someone share this with Apple, they have the same bug.
rgreekguy··on Vivaldi 7.6 allows customizing the Tab Bar and adds a Tab Button

rgreekguy··on Google Ends Support for Lynx Browser
From a normal browser (don't ask me what I mean by that), with its normal/default user agent, Google search does not work without Javascript. I think at all, any more, but at some point I had got rate limited of sorts, after using the search without Javascript for a little, I got a prompt to enable it.

rgreekguy··on Ask HN: Would this idea encourage more people to use public transit?
You either do not use public transit, or do not have beggars or street music players entering your trains. If the music player is ok, it is ok. The only time I have enjoyed it though is when he was playing a piece I knew.
rgreekguy··on PinePhone Pro [GNU/Linux smartphone] has been discontinued
Last time I bothered with news from Pine was with that Manjaro and bootloader drama. I am not even sure what came out of that...

But the other issue is I just found out from this post that PineBook Pro has been discontinued. But it is well listed in their devices, a shop exists just fine, with a price tag, it is just out of stock. Forever, apparently. I thought they were just being stingy with their production sizes, or they just didn't have enough traffic to make more.

Oh well, you can install postmarketOS on Chromebooks with ARM processors, and "normal" Linux is going well on other ARM devices, too. You can also find RISC-V laptops on Alibaba.

rgreekguy··on Sci-Hub has been blocked in India
Is it "just" that, or is it Elsevier's, Wiley's, and friends' doing? As I had commented the other day on a same/similar post, One Nation One Subscription was signed with Wiley this February, maybe other publishers have done something similar.

Hasn't Microsoft hired a few of the top Python development guys?
rgreekguy··on Sci-Hub Now Blocked in India
A few months ago, this[0] was signed between John Wiley and Sons and the Indian government. Wiley also includes the current leader in digital academic publishing. Every other big academic site is under Wiley, if a bit indirectly. Now, this article does not name Wiley, although I went over it very... diagonally, but I'd bet money Wiley is in there, too.

Also Wiley was against (sorry, I don't know the legal jargon) Internet Archive for the book renting stuff, and Z-library, maybe... Repeated offender, flying very close to a monopoly, I'd say, but there are other more obvious and problematic monopolies that are still not being dealt with, out there...

rgreekguy··on Ask HN: For those without a Google account, why and how do you manage online?
What in tarnation are you doing online that you cannot work without Google? This is a super Gen Z post.
rgreekguy··on More than 2.8M people in US identify as trans
Holy madness!
rgreekguy··on Ask HN: What "developer holy war" have you flip-flopped on?
I was Emacs, got tired of some stupid things, Vim or other things now. Every other thing has some Vim mode thingy anyway... (Which I always used, regardless.)

Same stupid reasons make me pretty much drop Linux. I have it on Steam Deck, but that's all. MacBook, and Haiku for cool stuff. (Or for worky stuff, because I hate MacOS.)

rgreekguy··on Turn your saved Reddit posts into a curated library
My saved posts are like 50% dead. Deleted posts, deleted accounts, deleted/overwritten comments, dead links on GFYcat and Imgur, banned subreddits... And imagine I was rather late in joining Reddit.
rgreekguy··on Show HN: A newsletter that shows off weird random URLs from across the internet
Intriguing, for sure, but the human-curated part is actually a pass for me. A curated list is nice, but true randomness is priceless. Sad to miss those horrors.
