rffn··on Show HN: Skillscript – A declarative, sandboxed language for tool orchestration
There is already a tool automation language called Skill. It is used in Cadence Virtuoso (EDA tool).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadence_SKILL

I thought I see Cadence Skill here on HN.

rffn··on Framework: Something big just got better
I hope its an update to the 16 inch laptop, maybe using the Ryzen AI platform.

Something bigbcould also be a printer. Oh well…

rffn··on You know more Finnish than you think
The word kalsarikännit told me how compact the Finnish language can be. They even have a word for this! :-)
rffn··on Ask HN: Options for One-Handed Typing
Many years ago I has some pretty good experience with a FrogPad. See http://www.frogpad.com/

Maybe it is possible to find one sold used. I think they are not available new anymore.

There different versions for left and right hand use.

rffn··on JSON has become today's machine-readable output format (on Unix)
Thanks. I wasn't aware about this library.
rffn··on JSON has become today's machine-readable output format (on Unix)
The article suggests that Gnu Awk might soon improve its understanding of JSON.

Can somebody please shed some light at this? Will gawk get JSON support. Or is is already there and I just need to get a recent version?

rffn··on Programmer in Berlin: Culture
I never understood why Ritter Sport has a feature to close so that some can be saved later.
rffn··on Practical Jokes (2007)
Reminds me of the old days. When X11 was not correctly secured, i.e., most of the time, it was possible to remotely login to someone‘s system, take a screenshot of :0 and display it on :0. :0 is the local display, so the computer seemed to be frozen.

More funny when all were in the room. :-)

rffn··on The backlash against the world's most hated font may be ending
I do not think I can agree to hate something, in particular in larger groups.
rffn··on U.S. Ambassador says Canadians are consuming 'unhealthy' amount of American news
Given that Canada is in America one would assume they consume much American news.
rffn··on POV-Ray – The Persistence of Vision Raytracer (2021)
Ah, the memories. First DKB Trace, then the newly renamed POV-Ray.

Left the computer on for hours to get tiny pictures.

Adding a 387 was a huge step forward; IIRC approximately a 10x speedup.

rffn··on United Airlines starts serving passengers personalized ads on seatback screens
This reminds me if scenes from the movie Idiocracy. They were mostly right about our future society (the movie is from 2005).

One thing they got wrong though. It did not take humanity 500 years to reach this depicted state.

rffn··on Awesome Engineering Games
I would have added the Portal games to the list.
rffn··on The Interface of Kai Krause's Software (2003)
Thanks for the memories. These were the cool tools in the nineties. Not a very practical UI, but good looking. :-)
rffn··on Streaming Databases: Everything You Wanted to Know
The site works for me now.
rffn··on iPhone 15’s shift to USB-C
Yes, I was using the term thin client as they did in the article. DeX actually tries to make the phone the only computer one needs. Just connect a screen and either use the phone as keyboard/mouse or connect a physical device.

This might be even more interesting with Samsung TVs which allow wireless DeX. Have not seen this in action though.

rffn··on iPhone 15’s shift to USB-C
Network operators could offer cheap data plans without allowing voice over them. Works for the Samsung S-Series tablets. Data is cheap, phone calls are disabled or charged separately.

For some users (e.g. elderly) an iPad with its large screen would make a better phone. They don't walk around talking (anymore). Also when wearing headphones, there is no need to lift the phone to the ear. Same goes talking to the watch.

rffn··on iPhone 15’s shift to USB-C
Apple would cannibalize their computer and iPad sales if they were supporting the thin client model like Samsung DeX. See how they already avoid cannibalization of the iPhone business by preventing the iPad to make phone calls. They protect their product lines from each other.

As much as I like to see such a feature, I don’t think Apple will ever give it to us.

rffn··on Ask HN: What is the most memorable game you played?
For me that would be the early first person games, in particular Ultima Underworld and Wolfenstein 3D.

Also the Settlers and Command and Conquer were quite important.

And not forget the time spent looking for gasoline for the chainsaw.

rffn··on Bill Gates: I'm literally losing sleep over Java (1996)
Yes, too much coffee causes sleep issues. He got over it though.
rffn··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
Good point. I meant to say that this regards only the three years mentioned. Then 2022 is above average.

While un my opinion there is a downwards trend since a few years, I would agree that there were quite a few years better than 2022 if the timeframe of a few decades is looked at, so many that is makes it difficult for 2022 to be at or above average.

rffn··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2023?
2023 will be an average year. It will not be as good as 2022 but will be better than 2024.
rffn··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you received in 2022?
“Speak last.”

Meaning listening to others more often than telling. In particular when you lead people. Not holding back my opinion but let the others contribute.

I particularly like the short, simple, concise statement saying everything.

rffn··on Why aren't there C conferences? (2018)
The Embedded Systems conference used to be a C conference to some extend.
rffn··on Monodraw – a non-subscription, powerful ASCII art editor
But one‘s personal time is worth much more than ten dollars. It a more efficient use of this time to solve a problem once instead of solving it on each platform separately.
rffn··on Manhattan rents cross $5k threshold for first time
Yes. This was posted after I wrote mine. I am a bit surprised that the median is so high. I would have expected a bigger difference, i.e. a few high value outliers pulling the median up further up.
rffn··on Manhattan rents cross $5k threshold for first time
Wouldn't it be better to use the median and not the average?
rffn··on Vangelis has died
First Klaus Schulze and now Vangelis. So sad. Rest in peace!
