reyqn··on How much faster are the Gnome 46 terminals?
I do think this wasn't excluded by the benchmarks from the link I posted

Edit: actually it was, cheetah seems to come with 0.33, not 0.31, and benchmarks were done in 0.31. It would be interesting to run them with 0.33.

reyqn··on How much faster are the Gnome 46 terminals?
It's not really, I just remembered wanting to try out this terminal emulator and being quite surprised that something actively advertised as cross-platform didn't support Windows.

I agree that the person posting the issue wasn't really doing it in a diplomatic way, but in the end, the result is the same. I think it's disingenuous to actively advertise something as cross-platform, without even specifying which platforms are actually supported (even if yes, technically it's cross-platform)

reyqn··on How much faster are the Gnome 46 terminals?
This was 2 and a half year ago, maybe alacritty improved since then.
reyqn··on How much faster are the Gnome 46 terminals?
Still slower than alacritty according to https://beuke.org/terminal-latency/

Also not really cross-platform, contrary to what's indicated in the first word of its github description, and the owner is kind of an ass about it https://github.com/kovidgoyal/kitty/issues/6481.

reyqn··on Best engineering interview question I've gotten
I'm definitely not fluent in C/C++ and I think I might have done ok with this question, even if I probably wouldn't be a right fit for this job. I guess I wouldn't have gotten to this point in the interview process so it's ok.
reyqn··on OpenGFW: an open source implementation of China's Great Firewall
So if they use this they might need less money. Isn't this lowering the barrier?
reyqn··on A Git client for simultaneous branches on top of your existing workflow
That's interesting. I'll try this out when windows support ships and keep an eye on it in the meantime.
reyqn··on A Git client for simultaneous branches on top of your existing workflow
Maybe I don't understand how gitbutler works, but the main reason I use worktrees is actually to keep my IDE and incremental builds getting confused when I switch branches, on branches that have lots of differences. It works really well, and I can fix stuff on old versions of our app in a jiffy.

I wouldn't use gitbutler for what I use worktrees, and I wouldn't use worktrees for what I think gitbutler is aiming at.

reyqn··on Rust-Written Linux Scheduler Showing Promising Results for Gaming Performance
Maybe for an experienced C programmer, but not everyone is one.
reyqn··on RSS can be used to distribute all sorts of information
I use a cron job to update a to-do RSS feed of different recurring tasks for example.

> A Suggested-by: tag indicates that the patch idea is suggested by the person named and ensures credit to the person for the idea. Please note that this tag should not be added without the reporter's permission, especially if the idea was not posted in a public forum. That said, if we diligently credit our idea reporters, they will, hopefully, be inspired to help us again in the future.

Seems like this would have been a good idea

reyqn··on My uBlock Origin filters to remove distractions
I thought people used those list because it cleaned up the websites without breaking them. This is largely breaking the websites, only letting through a very opinionated subset of functionalities.

Even if it's nice for people who want just this, I don't think this has its place on the annoyances lists you mentioned.

reyqn··on Keystroke timing obfuscation added to ssh(1)
Basically you can analyze typing speed to make some assumptions

For example, since users tend to type their passwords quicker than other things, you could see how many keystrokes were sent in a burst and guess the user's password length when they sudo something.

reyqn··on JPEG XL: How it started, how it’s going
I can't find what you're referring to, but I would be interested if you could share it.
reyqn··on Rarbg Is No More
Interestingly (or not), I avoided prowlarr because it didn't cache results, which triggered rarbg's rate limiter.

Well it took rarbg going down for me to see that they actually started caching results for rarbg in the latest release... Too bad.

reyqn··on WASIX, the Superset of WASI Supporting Threads, Processes and Sockets
And with existing .Net, C, Go, Rust, Lua, Zig, Crystal, D, Elixir, also Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, Lisp, Nim, Pascal, Perl, PHP, Python, R, Ruby code (non-exhaustive list). That's a lot of flexibility
reyqn··on YouTube tests blocking videos unless you disable ad blockers
If I'm aware a brand is wasting money to make me waste my time, money that furthermore will affect their product prices, you can be sure I'm never buying anything from this brand unless there is no alternatives (in which case they don't need awareness)
reyqn··on LSD: Not Even Once
I've got both visual noise and tinnitus, guess I should try LSD
reyqn··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
You just can't imagine how dense and efficient the public transport network could be if humanity didn't invest trillions over trillions of dollars into cars and car infrastructure.

Cars are bad and I hate cars because they're the worst idea humanity ever had.

reyqn··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
I think cars was the single most stupid "evolution" for humanity. And when maybe we had an out (prioritizing public transports, because fossil fuel is running out), then what... ELECTRIC CARS FOR EVERYONE. Cars take up so much money and space and energy... And the time that you should gain thanks to your car is just lost in transportation time, because now you can (and have to) live farther from work / friends / family / activities.
reyqn··on EU Commission doesn't understand what's written in its own chat control bill
Maybe this would actually make people tick on how outrageous this is.
reyqn··on Command Line One-Liners
This also has the advantage of being browseable. I just sorted by votes and learnt some neat new tricks.
reyqn··on Was there a tech-hiring bubble? Job postings data suggest so
If people need supervision from someone so extraordinary they will be paid half a million a year, in order to stop them from working against each other, maybe they're not really la "creme de la creme", and maybe organizations should be picky about the right things when selecting their workforce.

Or maybe developers are being overpaid compared to most workers, but underpaid compared to most "decision-makers" (most workers being so vastly underpaid it's not even funny anymore). Overpaid / underpaid is relative.

reyqn··on How much can you get out of a $4 VPS?
Yeah I know why you made the comment, my VPS burned. If you think other providers aren't as cheap as OVH you're probably wrong, and in any case, you should always have an other location redundancy if you're doing something critical.
reyqn··on Multi-Account Containers
You can apply a per container proxy, so if you run a proxy that goes through your vpn, you could do this with protonvpn. I do this with a ssh tunnel.
reyqn··on How much can you get out of a $4 VPS?
Well... Like anywhere else...
reyqn··on OsmAnd 4.3 for Android devices
It seems out of date though, and doesn't include this new rendering engine.
reyqn··on Show HN: I “wrote” a kid's book with ChatGPT and Midjourney
What? People are not tools, machine are. Is this so hard?
reyqn··on Show HN: I “wrote” a kid's book with ChatGPT and Midjourney
It's not so clear to me. AI is just a tool you use like any other.
reyqn··on Google’s Fuchsia OS was one of the hardest hit by last week’s layoffs
Well thanks, now I'm afraid fuschia could succeed.
