A little bit of this, a little bit of that

rexreed··on A DIY ‘bionic pancreas’ is changing diabetes care
Definitely what is needed is better early detection but I know that's a can of worms of its own. I commented on the bionic pancreas article as I know it's not a solution to pancreatic cancer, but I'm hoping that continued research in this direction evolves into better diagnosis and cures.
rexreed··on A DIY ‘bionic pancreas’ is changing diabetes care
Pancreatic cancer scares the bejeebus out of me. One day I hope there's some solution because it's almost a death warrant if you get that diagnosis.

rexreed··on Amazon acquires Fig
Oh times have changed. In days past acquisitions of startups by big tech were met with congratulation and adulation. Today they are met with dread and despair.
rexreed··on John Warnock has died
Is that event recorded and available for online viewing?
rexreed··on The tech job recession is over
So in sum, the Big Tech job recession (might be) over, but the Startup tech recession stays on. There have been a lot of AI startup failures over the same period as the credited GenAI boom. GenAI is favoring large, entrenched companies, and startups (and the hype-following VCs and investors) might want to look elsewhere for big opportunities.
rexreed··on The tech job recession is over
How does this jibe with all the news / media hype about Startups facing impending doom and the big squeeze to focus on profits vs growth (which means cutting staff):

I can go on and on. Maybe for the MAFANG's life is going .. ok, but it seems in startup land, the sky is still falling? Or is this all a head fake?

rexreed··on "About 67k” sites are banned from submission on HN, the list is kept secret
As Lesley Gore would say (paraphrased), "it's their party and we can cry if we want to".
rexreed··on Borgbase backups have been unavailable for 3 days
Which cloud server do you use for your backups for the $1/mo in added costs?
rexreed··on MS Teams channels cannot contain MS-DOS device names
Thanks! Your father's site and his work is amazing, including your house! And yes, I did end up finding the address and listing through a basic search, but your Dad's site actually has more and better pictures ;)

When you build your new Austin LAN-party-pad would love to see that.

rexreed··on MS Teams channels cannot contain MS-DOS device names
Great site - I am reading all your posts about the LAN party house now. Do you have the real estate listing of the house when it was up for sale? I'm just curious as to where it was located - you mentioned a sliver of land, and I saw the asking price ($2M in Palo Alto) so I'm curious to see what it looked like from the outside and its location, if you don't mind sharing!
rexreed··on Show HN: Agentflow – Run Complex LLM Workflows from Simple JSON
Thanks! I'll check this out!
rexreed··on Show HN: Agentflow – Run Complex LLM Workflows from Simple JSON
Thanks - this does help. Curious about the function calls, especially around image generation.

Also, can you clarify what you mean by "You don't need to write any code with LangChain."?

rexreed··on Show HN: Agentflow – Run Complex LLM Workflows from Simple JSON
I'm trying to understand what this does and how it works. Can you provide more examples with different use cases? How does this work with / compare to LangChain?
rexreed··on Not Using Zoom
There's definitely more that can be done in terms of setting trust with your users, partners, employers, and suppliers - I posted a comment elsewhere on whether or not you have a posted and shared Trustworthy AI policy, and something that is used to guide internal AI development. Happy to email that to you as well.
rexreed··on Zoom terms now allow training AI on user content with no opt out
Do you have a public, published trustworthy AI framework that you use to guide your AI projects? Something like https://www.cognilytica.com/trustworthy-ai-workshop/ ? Would be good to see what decisions and processes you follow to guide your AI efforts, how you work with suppliers and partners, consent and disclosure policies, and how you communicate internally and externally.

rexreed··on Wells Fargo customers scramble after deposits disappear from their accounts
Not crypto. At least not specifically. I'd be happy with a whole lot of regional banks that aren't going to just get acquired in a year. Consolidation isn't a friend.
rexreed··on Wells Fargo customers scramble after deposits disappear from their accounts
What the world needs is decentralization across the board. Finance, internet, media, and government.
rexreed··on $30k USD is being held in my Stripe account
I keep looking for alternatives but there always seem to be negative tradeoffs. I've asked in a comment elsewhere in this post about Gravity payments but not getting any responses. So I keep hoping.
rexreed··on “Absurd”: Google, Amazon rebuked over unsupported Chromebooks still for sale
I wish I could keep using my current unsupported android phone but slowly all my critical apps are no longer working including the banking apps which won't support my android version. What do you do about that?
rexreed··on $30k USD is being held in my Stripe account
Do you use Gravity Payments for SaaS apps or solely online payments? How easy is it technically to integrate like Stripe? So many systems only use Stripe that it seems technically difficult to integrate other providers. I can't find pricing on the Gravity Payments page, any indications of how they compete pricing wise? Do they support online invoicing and recurring subscription billing?
rexreed··on $30k USD is being held in my Stripe account
I worry about this method of getting Stripe support. First, HN only seems to be effective for Stripe support if you can get enough attention, otherwise these posts seem to get no attention. I worry that one day, I too will need help with some stupid Stripe issue, and when I post something on HN it will just be ignored and won't go anywhere. Second, it's sad that this is the way to get any sort of support at all. Tech surely has regressed in the past decade.
rexreed··on Bootstrapping to €600k MRR and getting killed by Shopify: Checkout X
Also - I really like your graphics in your blog post. How do you go about generating them?
rexreed··on Bootstrapping to €600k MRR and getting killed by Shopify: Checkout X
I'm curious about your use of affiliates and how they worked out - definitely would like to get some guidance there. But it's not for a SaaS app, so not sure how much guidance you can provide.
rexreed··on Twitter’s Rebrand to X Could Be a Trademark Nightmare Thanks to Microsoft
Yes. But then folks realized that the supposed-AI tool actually used people pretending to be bots: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/jul/06/artificia...

X.ai was subsequently acquired in 2021 by Bizzabo: https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2021/06/03/224127...

Bizzabo then shut down the X.ai tool: https://www.bizzabo.com/blog/xai-sunset

And then they sold the X.ai domain to you know who: https://www.theverge.com/2023/4/14/23684005/elon-musk-new-ai...

rexreed··on StabilityAI cofounder says CEO tricked him into selling stake for $100
Not quite -- Eduardo Saverin has had a pretty good life after he was diluted out. "Eduardo Luiz Saverin is a Brazilian billionaire entrepreneur and angel investor based in Singapore. Saverin is one of the co-founders of Facebook. In 2012, he owned 53 million Facebook shares (approximately 2% of all outstanding shares), valued at approximately $2 billion at the time"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eduardo_Saverin

I'd say nothing like giving up a stake for $100

rexreed··on Amendment introduced to limit remote working in Ohio
This is the state legislative branch imposing something on the executive branch. Maybe there's a difference in perspective on remote work, and the representatives don't like how the agencies are handling remote work and want to impose their requirements rather than make it a matter of agency or executive policy.
