revorad··on Ask HN: How do you build communities fast?
I’ve participated in many communities this year. If there’s one thing I’ve learned from the best community builders, it’s that you can’t do it fast.

You need to design, nurture and grow communities patiently.

Check out Rosie Sherry’s work.

Gergely Orosz has been writing some great stuff - https://newsletter.pragmaticengineer.com/
revorad··on Ask HN: What's the best book you read in 2021?
Dune - I loved it so much I’m avoiding watching the film in case it doesn’t live up to the book.

Never split the difference by Chris Voss - it’s a classic on negotiation. I’ve learned a lot of practical tips and tricks from it.

revorad··on Ask HN: Strategies to land fully remote $250k+ job
Not sure where you got that number from, but getting about that much after a few years of experience is not very hard at all. I've only worked for a daily rate, never hourly. I'm based in the UK where a senior developer can get contracts upwards of £600 per day pretty easily.

Now with remote work being the standard, you can get much more if you work for good US companies.

revorad··on Ask HN: Strategies to land fully remote $250k+ job
In my experience, the easiest way to earn more is to work as a contractor. You can charge more, have more control over your time, get raises more often and go on holiday more often (every 6 months).

I made a whole video series about getting into contracting. This first one lays out my take on why you should consider it - https://learnetto.com/tutorials/why-should-you-become-a-cont...

I don't know much about the field but your post reminded me of this interview of Martine Rothblatt on the Tim Ferriss Show - https://tim.blog/2020/12/17/martine-rothblatt-transcript/

Her story might give you some pointers. All the best to you and your partner.

revorad··on Ask HN: Did you find something to use your Raspberry Pi 400 for?
I bought it for my son on his 7th birthday. He absolutely loves it - uses it to do some school work, web browsing and play games.
revorad··on Ask HN: Why is Docusign a $50B company?
I use https://www.signwell.com. It works really well and the free tier is enough for infrequent use.

Indoor tree-climbing gyms caught my eye. My first thought was "that's dumb, we already have natural trees outdoors. Why do we need to put them indoors?". Then I remembered we also have natural cliffs and indoor wall climbing is still huge. :-D

revorad··on Show HN: Open-source UK fuel availability tracker
Great idea!

On iPhone Safari it’s not detecting my location. Is it supposed to prompt me to share the location? I don’t get anything.

Update: Nevermind, it works once I enabled location sharing in my privacy settings.

I will share this with others.

As per another comment, it would be good if we could search or choose a location.

revorad··on The Mom Test – How to talk to customers
Rob's book is fantastic. I remember reading a very early version when it first came out. I'm very pleased to see that it has steadily become more popular over the years.

Another great new book on the same topic is Deploy Empathy by Michele Hansen. Michele goes even deeper with lots of practical tips, scripts, and templates. I highly recommend it, especially if you liked The Mom Test - https://deployempathy.com.

revorad··on Reviewing the SEAL: A new form of bootstrapper funding
Very interesting analysis. As a bootstrapping founder, I am thinking about possibly raising funding at some point. So it's good to see new options coming out and some way of comparing them with existing options.

To the author - I wonder if you could use the data from the Open startups (sharing their numbers on Baremetrics) and see how different funding options, including Earnest capital's SEAL, would work out for them.

Learnetto | Senior Developers | Remote | Part Time

Learnetto is an online education site (https://learnetto.com). It's a solo bootstrapped business, steadily growing with a few thousand developers learning programming skills through tutorials and courses.

This will be highly rewarding work because you will help developers who are starting out in their careers to learn faster and progress quickly.

revorad··on Show HN: My free React on Rails 5 course
Hi HN, I've recently created this new free course on React specifically for Ruby on Rails developers.

I'd like to get some feedback and see how I can improve it.

If you've got a few minutes, you can get the course here - https://learnetto.com/users/hrishio/courses/the-free-react-o...

If you have any thoughts on the landing page as well, that'd be great. Does it make sense? Is it clear what the course will teach you?

Thank you!

revorad··on Rails developers should learn React
Re: the gems, you're right. There are multiple approaches. Putting everything in Rails is the easiest to get started, but you can gradually separate React from Rails if your app needs it. I wrote about it here - https://learnetto.com/blog/3-ways-to-use-react-with-ruby-on-...
revorad··on Rails developers should learn React
I linked to one HN whoishiring thread in the article - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12846216 - but if you look at some others, you will notice that a lot of companies are using both Rails and React. I've seen the same on other job boards. My own last consulting gig was at a company which was gradually porting its Rails view layer to React.
revorad··on Do You Need to Be a Really Good Programmer to Make a Living Freelancing?
I don't think it helps to think of marketing as something you rely upon. Marketing is a multiplier. Even if there's huge demand for your amazing solution to a painful problem, marketing can still get you more customers. It's just multiplying a bigger base number.

This simple concept of thinking of everything in business - product, design, demand, marketing, sales, customer support - as multipliers has been very useful to me.

revorad··on RubyGems.org gem replacement security vulnerability and mitigation
Thanks for this. So I ran this and found a bunch of unsafe gems. Do I report them to each gem author or to RubyGems security?
revorad··on Ask HN: Resources to learn marketing?
There are many resources depending on what exactly your projects are. Justin Jackson's book "Marketing for Developers" was quite helpful to me. Here's my brief review - https://learnetto.com/blog/learning-marketing-from-justin-ja...

I run an online education site where we're going to launch some courses on marketing. I could give you free access if you email me at hrishi@learnetto.com and tell me more about what you're trying to do.

CO-FOUNDER for Learnetto (https://learnetto.com) | London, UK | ONSITE

I'm looking for a co-founder for my education startup Learnetto.

Learnetto is a marketplace where anyone can teach and sell a course on useful tech skills including programming, design, product management and marketing.

Business model: We take a small cut (25%) of the sales.

I've built most of the product myself with some help from freelancers.

We have a bunch of teachers and students already.

The market seems crowded but I think there's room for a better marketplace, where the terms for teachers are fair and reasonable (https://learnetto.com/teachers) and students get an awesome place to learn. So I'm building it.

WHAT I CAN OFFER YOU

Equity.

A chance to build an exciting and fun business in an exploding market with a technical cofounder who can sell (that's me!).

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR

I'm looking for someone who can build product and also understands and cares about the business. Someone who has worked on their own projects, startup or business.

TECH STACK

Rails 4 app on Heroku, videos hosted on Wistia, Stripe for payments.

Lots more details here - https://medium.com/@hrishio/an-open-letter-to-my-future-co-f...

If you're up for building an awesome online education business together, email me - hrishi@learnetto.com

revorad··on Slack raises $200M at $3.8B valuation for business messaging
Oh ok, I didn't know that. I tried Quip when it first came out. Anyway, even if functionally they are similar, the Slack ecosystem is too strong now.
