revolutukr··on Everyone going to World Cup must have this app, experts are sounding the alarm
There is no way to answer your trolling without a significant amount of sarcasm. Good day to you.
revolutukr··on Everyone going to World Cup must have this app, experts are sounding the alarm
> The only difference here is that they were able to build an app to do all the tracking in plain sight. I'm sure governments in the US and Europe would love to be able to force all visitors to install a similar app.

Yet, we do not because unlike in Qatar, the UAE and other religious dictatorships, we are a democracy and we have the ability to change our government.

You can do better than whatbouatism.

revolutukr··on The Cancellation of ‘Jihad Rehab’
I wonder what is more terrifying, knowing that the people in her industry are cancelling her, or knowing the extremely high likelihood that islamist fanatics might permanently cancel her?
revolutukr··on The Cancellation of ‘Jihad Rehab’
In that Marxism requires massive amounts of violence to push its political stance, and that the system itself views continuous violent oppression as the only way to implement and maintain itself?
revolutukr··on Why did this happen to me? I didn't do anything bad to them
Win, lose or draw, we Ukrainians will be hunting down russian war criminals for the next century, just like the Simon Wiesenthal center did. The animosity towards russians in Ukraine, and abroad is growing exponentially.

Combine this with the sheer amount of identifying data that the modern age is giving us on russian "soldiers" and their collaborators, we will have our work cut out for us.

Expect several decades of daily assassinations, retributory attacks and arrests.

There is quite a bit of research and debate on this.

revolutukr··on Musk says SpaceX cannot fund Ukraine's Starlink internet indefinitely
Elon Musk seems to be playing a great long-con on the American tax payer. $300m per launch, $16bn in hand-outs.

revolutukr··on Ask HN: Teaching Greybeard IT
As a retired sysadmin with 30 years experience, I can tell you with a good amount of certainty that nobody will care if they aren't already sysadmins. It is viewed as entirely unimportant to understand these things, and the only thing you need to get a job is good whiteboard/leet coding skills.

The world changed.

revolutukr··on Ex Police Officer Used Law Enforcement Tech to Hack Women’s Explicit Photos
The most famous person to say this was a billionaire who made his wealth selling peoples' personal data.[1] He's famous for having given a $90m golden parachute to a person as his punishment for accusations of sexually harassing Google employees.[2]

revolutukr··on Cloud services like AWS or Google Cloud Platform may be the wrong choice
These shock jock articles are boring.

Step 1: Write an incendiary title Step 2: Make definitive statements meant to be applied broadly but actually targeted at a specific situation that the author is experiencing, or comes from the author's own problems with something. Step 3: Make sure to cast doubt and insecurity, making somebody else feel like they made the wrong choice, even when everything is working perfectly Step 4: Street cred improved!

revolutukr··on What it feels like to be bullied out of a job you love
Me too. My boss is an asshole.
revolutukr··on What it feels like to be bullied out of a job you love
This makes me very sad, because in my 30 years I've seen so many of you burn out. I was like that for the first 15 years of my career until I watched a manager turn into a billionaire by abusing everybody who worked for him. My last 15 years I detached, and found myself much happier. My bipolar disorder became manageable, my addictions went away, my health improved, and my finances improved.

Your job will never love you back. Your employer's interests are diametrically opposed to you having a happy life.

revolutukr··on What it feels like to be bullied out of a job you love
Cash rules everything around me is the only emotionally healthy attitude to take about your career. Every time I would be told "we're a family" by a potential employer, I added $25k to my minimum salary. If corporations are "family" then that family belongs on Jerry Springer, and receiving group Dialectic Behavioral Therapy.

Punch in, do a good job, punch out, have a life outside of your job. Don't socialize with co-workers, don't spend all of your free time on work projects or talking to other colleagues online. Do anything you can to compartmentalize and separate work from home.

Work is how you pay the bills, it is not who you are.

revolutukr··on Ask HN: Technical forums that are not dominated by pedantry?
3. Is highly under-rated, and I would throw "shock jocks" in there as well. There's a certain devops CEO with lots of street-cred, who loves to make these definitive, insulting, patronizing statements. "Anybody who has to schedule releases is doing it wrong and I feel pity for them". "DevOps is Bullshit. If you're not writing code to develop the project then you shouldn't be employed", etc.

It's impossible to have a real discussion with the "evangelist" crowd anymore, or if anybody from the evangelist crowd is within earshot. Not just forums, but they've pretty much ruined meetups and conferences.

revolutukr··on Wikipedia is not short on cash
Forgive me, I meant to say hella fucking creepy. Everything their employees do is public. It invites stalkers, harassment and phishing attempts. Terrible opsec.

I dunno bra, I write code because I like being the guy behind the guy, not the face on the window. You do you boo, whatever, but I've got my opinions and I'll express them whenever I want, however I want, and wherever I want.

I'll also add to this that they've got an incredibly incompetent recruitment department. The recruiter I dealt with really, really, really likes to use big words to show off her English lit degree.

I posted about it on twitter, 5 people responded with "Did she use the word perspicuous at least 3 times in every e-mail? Did she ghost you for 2 months, then send you angry messages that you haven't been more proactive in chasing her down? When you turned her down, did she say "I'm very disappointed, I saw something special in you?"

revolutukr··on Wikipedia is not short on cash
I've never been offered a higher salary than I was offered by wikimedia. I turned it down because their corporate culture is helllla creepy. I'm a private guy, and they expect everybody in the company to be somewhat public figures, down to the recruiters and office managers.
revolutukr··on Ask HN: How do angel investors/VCs deal with “zombie companies”?
> so people do their 1-2 years and move on.

Sounds like about 50% of the employees at every company I worked at over 30 years. In the '00s and '10s, there was no such thing as raises unless you were at a public company, so the only way to increase your salary was to job hop every 18-24 months. When you hit your 40s, however, that resume history makes you unhirable I found out.

revolutukr··on Ask HN: How do angel investors/VCs deal with “zombie companies”?
If you aren't a 25 year old kid trying to win the startup lottery at a future unicorn, or getting fat at FAANG, then these jobs are great. They move slower, so their processes are often very well refined, the churn is low and the change/velocity is even.

There are few fires to fight in a stable company with moderate growth, a low change rate, and predictable customer behaviors. Disorganization and exhaustion is usually a side effect of hyper growth.

When I hit 40 or so, I accepted I wasn't going to be a billionaire and that I was too old and too mediocre to get a job at a unicorn. I still provided a lot of value for my customers in last few years of work before I retired from tech.

If you are ready to transition from "My life is my work! I'm going to kill it, crush it, and get my lamb" .. Then look for a stable, low growth company which disappointed investors but not customers.

revolutukr··on Ask HN: How do angel investors/VCs deal with “zombie companies”?
It's not so bad. The stress at these places is far lower, the work load is realistic, and the salaries are pretty good, sometimes the base is higher than you'll make at FAANG because they can't entice people with stock.

What's best is these companies welcome wisdom over leet coding. They aren't going to be like Amazon where the way you advance is by stabbing your coworkers in the back. They just have steady revenue streams they want to protect, with no delusions about ever becoming a unicorn.

revolutukr··on Ask HN: How do angel investors/VCs deal with “zombie companies”?
Primarily I used to search Crunchbase and Hacker News for companies which got a lot of hype 5+ years ago, then I never heard of again.
revolutukr··on Ask HN: How do angel investors/VCs deal with “zombie companies”?
If you are not a rockstar, keep a list of zombie companies. These are the ones most likely to hire you, especially when you are over 40 years old.
revolutukr··on 12,000 Facebook employees, 15% of its workforce, may lose jobs amid quiet layoff
Very interesting. In my retirement I've spent the past five years helping refugees get their foot in the door (mostly Syrian and Afghan students/recent grads, but about 20% have a lot of experience). This year has been brutal, we shut down in August because everything dried up.

We worked mostly with lingering start-ups who failed to launch, mid-tier companies, and small companies. It all dried up, or the requirements shifted a tier (before mid-level was 3-5 years, now 5-7. Senior positions are basically looking for people with Principle / Staff engineering credentials). Of course, YMMV, we were navigating very specific situations which worked out well for people who are otherwise discriminated against / out of luck for finding work.

Also, anecdotally, the salaries attached to the stream of recruiter spam I receive in my personal e-mail have plummeted. Maybe this is good, smaller companies will be able to hire more staff since salary expectations are lower?

revolutukr··on 12,000 Facebook employees, 15% of its workforce, may lose jobs amid quiet layoff
The next 5 years are going to be a blood bath for junior, mid-level and just average developers. Everybody I know who is not a rockstar is going back to train for a new career, often outside of technology.

Those 12,000 employees are first in line for every and any job, before anybody who does not have FAANG credentials.

revolutukr··on The fight to cut off the crypto funding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
A good start would be for the Biden administration to pass laws with life sentences for sending money to or receiving money from (including Crypto) russia, North Korea or any other countries considered enemies of the state.

I have already lost two family members to russians. None of us are nazis. I'm a gay Ukrainian married to a gay Israeli American. If I'm a nazi, then I should be having serious marital conflicts right now.
