revnode··on The Fourth of July
> People cannot "transcend" past wrongs, so don't do them.

Semantics? I don't care what word you use, but you can absolutely always do better and the beautiful thing about America's founding is that in every respect, it is aspirational and we have aspired to do better. And we have. And we can do better still.

revnode··on Keep Your Stuff, for Life
As an engineer

> files or objects, tweets or 5TB videos

means rsync, curl, and Twitter API integration. It obviously does more than this, since I can throw something together that does that in a few hours. Where is the list of everything it supports?!?

That should be front and center.

I wish that was the only problem with the new Reddit ... it frequently crashes my browser. No other website does this.

> China had an extensive system to delete disinformation.

China had an extensive system to delete information.

Fixed that for you =)

Just because I sometimes go through a tunnel doesn't mean I want to live in a cave.

Indeed I have. I just don't want to party like it's 1976.

> why wouldn't I have an editor on my laptop or desktop

Because it's not just the editor. It's the toolchain. I get remote terminal inside the editor. All my tooling lives on the server and can be specific to the project I'm working on, instead of gumming up my local machine.

There are advantages to having VSCode in Electron. I run VSCode as a web application on my server that I access remotely using a browser on a number of different machines. That instance has access to the file system on my server, allowing me to use any machine to do my work without installing anything. Try doing that with Sublime.

Microsoft is leveraging this by allowing you to open up VSCode in Github for any file, no installation necessary. Amazon is doing the same with Cloud9 on AWS that they acquired earlier.

That wasn't always the case. That was his point.

You are absolutely right, but it's also not as bad as it was before. You can now buy "unrestricted" parts. Before, you couldn't even buy an air filter.
revnode··on Joe Rogan got ripped off
It's contrarian if it cuts against the majority opinion, not if it comes from some obscure source from a lunatic. There are many legitimate contrarian opinions, many of which later become the mainstream opinion.
revnode··on YouTube removes interview with professor of medicine on Covid stats and policy
> not be able to decide which videos it hosts, pays for in storage and bandwidth?

I didn't say they shouldn't be able to. I said they shouldn't, even if they are able to.

> Why not?

Why should they?

> If you own website, you have all rights to do any censorship you want.

There is a difference between can and should. They can, but should not.

revnode··on Spotify signs ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ to an exclusive multi-year deal
You're selectively quoting me. I'm pretty sure I spent a bit of time talking about tolerance and what it means.

They could have easily said we don't allow illegal content and that would be the end of it. I would be fine with that. It would mean a jury of my peers would determine if whatever was said violated our societal values.

That's not what they said. That's not what any of them say. Instead, they very clearly state that they will determine what is and what is not allowed by their standards.

They are within their legal rights to do so ... but I am in no way in support of that. I do not want Google, Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, etc. in charge of what we can and cannot say in public. We, as a society, should frown on that and those working in those companies should speak up during meetings when that is proposed.

They explicitly prohibit content that is "offensive".

"Offensive Content. Content that is defamatory, obscene, abusive, invasive of privacy ..."

Pretty sure he hits a few of those? So "Amazon doesn’t give a fuck" isn't quite right.

revnode··on Georgism
All states have federal income taxes and all states have federal sales taxes (by way of tariffs).
revnode··on Spotify signs ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ to an exclusive multi-year deal
> It's actually not that big of a deal to load an MP4 into a <video/> tag, turns out.

Kind of a big deal if you can't host that MP4 somewhere? If Google/Twitter/Facebook/etc. don't want your stuff ... chances are Amazon doesn't want to host it either. Even if you stand up your own hardware, you're at the mercy of whatever company is providing you the internet connection.

Free speech as a principle isn't about hearing stuff you like. It's about hearing stuff you don't like. That's where the tolerance part of it comes in. When you're tolerating something, it means you're putting up with it even if you don't like it.

And it's not about the law. Yeah, they can do whatever they want since they're private entities. It's about what values we choose to uphold as a society.

revnode··on Georgism
> The main Georgist policy recommendation is a tax assessed on land value. Georgists argue that revenues from a land value tax (LVT) can be used to reduce or eliminate existing taxes (for example, on income, trade, or purchases) that are unfair and inefficient.

Fine in theory, the reality is that you get nailed for property taxes AND income taxes AND sales taxes AND everything else. If a government CAN tax it, it will and will not restrain itself.

revnode··on Preliminary test results suggest 21% of NYC residents have Covid antibodies
> Sorry, can someone spell out how this might be good news?

It's good news because it strongly suggests that mortality is much less than previously suspected. There were numbers floating around from anywhere between 10% to 3% a few weeks back. A mortality rate < 1% is very good news because it means fewer people will die in the long run.
