Most importantly, it's fun.
Forgive my ignorance, I'm very curious about this as a UK citizen.
The reasons behind that I'm sure are numerous and valid for a lot of people, but they don't make it any less annoying for me as a regular IE9 user.
Lots of things like this don't seem to have even been tested in IE9, despite the fact it's (subjectively, to me at least) a decent browser that finally supports Canvas.
A large amount of the software available for those consoles utilises a dual-screen interface in an interesting / useful way.
Admittedly not a device designed for creation (beyond the camera and associated silly visual effects), but the original DS came out of nowhere and proved a dual-screen device with a stylus interface could work properly.
It's unfortunate that some people are experiencing headaches etc with the stereoscopic 3D. New Mario & Mario Kart titles are being released soon, and despite the inevitable groans that Nintendo are just rehashing old franchises (which they are), I struggle to think of any of the recent rehashes that weren't great. The 3DS lineup will improve and improve. I think it's great.
Given Google's recent behaviour with the Nortel auction (bidding pi etc), which could also be seen as a bit childish, perhaps this is Microsoft simply responding in kind. It is bizarre though.
I personally would prefer using the canvas though, especially if it becomes HW accelerated across the board.
I like the stick figures also!
Yes, it has flaws, and lots of people use it without really understanding how it works / best practices etc, but purely for it's accessibility and ubiquity, coupled with its charming quirks and idiosyncracies, I think it's great.
It baffles my mind that more people don't appreciate Javascript for the lovely little scripting language that it is.
Have you tried it in IE9 or one of the recent builds of FF / Chrome?
Who is this actually aimed at?!
