revicon··on Ask HN: What online communities offer a high level of discussion?
Man, haven't been on /. for a long long time. Thanks for reminding me to go log back in again.

revicon··on Unpopular ideas about social norms
Is the opposite also true? Is the upvote button not an "I agree" button? If it is, then the opposite is also true. Otherwise there really isn't a point to the vote buttons.
revicon··on Ask HN: What methods, tools etc. do you use to validate your business ideas?
yes, the goal behind what you are trying to accomplish makes sense.

I think I'm still not understanding how you are making a cold call, over the phone, to a complete stranger, and somehow getting them to start talking about problems they may have without there being a purpose (from their point of view) to why they're talking to you in the first place.

revicon··on Ask HN: What methods, tools etc. do you use to validate your business ideas?
If you aren't mentioning your idea or that you are working on something, what is the subject of the call? I think I'm not understanding how a cold call like this would work.

revicon··on Lyft’s Radical Experiment in Charging for Free Parking
The parking spots were not "free", employees were paying for them with their time, leaving their homes extra early and risking circling the neighborhood looking for extra spots if the lot was full. That time was worth money to the drivers and the growing price of a spot was evidence of that.

As they increased their employee count, the time cost would have increased as well and employees unwilling to spend that time on trying to get parking would take another mode of transportation. From the linked comic it sounds like the employees that spearheaded the program were trying to prove a larger point that cities could raise public transit funds by charging for all parking spaces in a city. I don't think this program was at all about making things more efficient at Lyft.

revicon··on Lyft’s Radical Experiment in Charging for Free Parking
I didn't see anything on the linked page that Lyft compelled employees to come into the office. Did I miss something that you read?
revicon··on Ask HN: What tools do you use to manage your life?
I have a notebook called "Captain's Log" that I constantly post things into. I have my Evernote app set to default to that notebook. Everytime I hear something on the radio I want to look up, I type a few of the lyrics into a note and save it and it goes into the Captain's Log for perusal later. Everytime I have something I need to remember to do I post a note into the Captain's log and add a "todo" tag to it so I can sort those out when needed. All meeting notes go in there too. When I start coding something I take notes on what I'm working on in a note so that I can go back and remember what I did when I was working on that thing I can't quite remember.

I can sort that notebook by "date created" and see a log of my life going back in time and I've found it very useful.

This is a spam article posted by a throwaway HN account with very little content mainly focused on pushing traffic to a for-pay udemy course.

Edit: looking at every article posted on HN from "pythonprogramminglanguage.com" is the same junk... https://news.ycombinator.com/from?site=pythonprogramminglang...

Each account that posted each of the links in the above search was created just to post that link and nothing else. All spam.

Anyone have an opinion on the best option these days to do the reverse (speech to text)? Building an open source version of Alexa sounds like a fun project.
revicon··on Bitcoin Is for Drugs
I buy BBQ from Smokey J's (https://www.smokeyjbbq.com) in Berkeley, CA with bitcoin. They have an android tablet under the counter for taking transactions, it's great!

Never bought drugs with them before, according to the artice maybe I should try...

revicon··on “Someone was typing in a URL and WhatsApp was fetching it off my server”
It's not sinister so much as that Whatsapp is sending the requests directly from the user's phone (not through a proxy, etc) which is exposing the end user's IP address and full user agent string to the website hosting the page. This information could be used to identify the end user which goes against Whatsapp's whole "Privacy and Security is in our DNA" thing. (https://www.whatsapp.com/security/)

Correct. Because it's decentralized it's not susceptible to being taken offline by a single blocked site
revicon··on Pirate Bay may finally be sunk after EU copyright ruling
I wonder how easy it would be to build a distributed torrent aggregation service on top of Ethereum. Something similar to what openbazaar is doing.
revicon··on Uber is imploding, but does anyone really care?
Dunno, this is only the eighth quarter that Amazon has turned a profit. Uber is a young company
revicon··on Uber is imploding, but does anyone really care?
I'm probably being dense but I don't understand the claim that "Uber is imploding".

From the article: "the company doubled its gross bookings to $20 billion in 2016, and its net revenue (excluding China) was $6.8 billion"

The company had $2.8 billion in losses in 2016 and it puts the company's long term prospects for financial viability into question which might mean a down round on the next funding but the company is hardly about to go under.

The article title should be "Uber got a bunch of bad press and a few execs left" but I guess that doesn't drive impressions.

revicon··on Working with time in Postgres
makes sense. After removing it...

  with weeks as (
    select week as week
    from generate_series('2017-01-01'::date, now()::date, '1 week'::interval) weeks
  )

  SELECT weeks.week,
    count(*)
  FROM weeks,
    test_results
  WHERE
    test_results.date_created > weeks.week
  AND
    test_results.date_created <= weeks.week - '1 week'::interval
it throws...

  ERROR: column "week" does not exist
  LINE 2: select week as week
                     ^
I would move this to the post's own "replies" section, but it doesn't have one.
revicon··on Working with time in Postgres
Weird, the example in the post (after changing table/field names for my database)

  with weeks as (
    select week as week
    from generate_series('2017-01-01'::date, now()::date, '1 week'::interval) weeks
  ),

  SELECT weeks.week,
    count(*)
  FROM weeks,
    test_results
  WHERE
    test_results.date_created > weeks.week
  AND
    test_results.date_created <= weeks.week - '1 week'::interval
Throws an error for me...

  ERROR: syntax error at or near "SELECT"
  LINE 5: SELECT weeks.week,
          ^
revicon··on Twilio Functions – Public Beta
Thanks for letting us know Ricky, it's great to see new functionality being released so often on Twilio. Playing with functions for a bit today, it would be great to be able to add additional nodejs libraries, is that a feature coming up any time soon?
revicon··on Twilio Functions – Public Beta
It's definitely using AWS Lamba, I spun up a trial account and texted myself the output of JSON.stringify(process.env)...

Edit: adding linebreaks...

2nd edit: Realized there were AWS access tokens in there. It's probably not a good idea for those to be exposed to the environment they're running this user generated code in. They should probably be wrapping these in vm.runInNewContext()

revicon··on Alone on the Open Road: Truckers Feel Like ‘Throwaway People’
One guess is that most truck drivers were freelance (and many still are), owning their truck and getting paid per mile. Perhaps the rest of the industry standardized around that model regardless of the relationship the truck driver has with the parent company.
revicon··on Borderlands' sponsorships came about as an alternative to closing the store
Borderlands has always been a great place to go and discover new sci-fi authors and books, their staff is great and it sucks that the books business is so tough these days.

I joined their sponsorship program as soon as they started it, it feels great to walk in and see your name printed on the printout on the wall by the coffeeshop door.

revicon··on Borderlands' sponsorships came about as an alternative to closing the store
One of the issues Borderlands talked about when they first started the sponsorship program was that each book they sold had the price printed on the book cover (printed by the publisher), so they were unable to raise prices when wages increased. I suppose you could just put a new pricetag over the old one but it's so easy for someone to open up amazon's app and check prices online that it wouldn't make much difference.
revicon··on Ask HN: How do you manage SSH keys and SSL certificates in your company?
It's been pretty seamless. We use it for our static website on S3 and for our elastic load balancer on elastic beanstalk. I'm guessing in a year all the other cloud providers will follow suit with similar offerings now that heroku and AWS both provide SSL certs out of the box.
revicon··on Ask HN: How do you manage SSH keys and SSL certificates in your company?
SSL certs are managed by AWS certificate manager and all VMs are deployed via elastic beanstalk or exist as Lambda functions. No SSH access is enabled across any of our infrastructure.
