revicon··on Ask HN: Host a website from a living room in 2022?
Seems like one issue would be that an older Mac device is not going to be able to run new software updates once it ages out and wont get new security updates once that happens.

> Your mistake is thinking that it is YOUR internet connection. It's not. It belongs to your ISP. If it belonged to you, you wouldn't have to pay for it every month. A lot of ISPs specifically forbid running a web server from your connection. Comcast is one of them

You're not wrong, but as far as I know there is no human on earth that owns "their own internet connection", everyone's network connects to an upstream network. Every upstream service has rules their customers must abide by.

With AWS you can host a very robust website using API Gateway, (AWS Lambda or ECS) and either RDS or DynamoDB for a datastore. All of this can come in under their free tier for a huge amount of traffic.

Neat setup, I've considered starting down this path as well.

With this setup, how do you deal with data backups, especially if multiple of your docker instances have databases of their own?

Anyone know what the best practice is to guard against corruption on your SD card or your SSD if your home power goes out and your Raspberry Pi power-cycles unexpectedly (outside of just getting a UPS?)

I've had a previous RPI SD card get corrupted this way and I've been hesitant to do anything useful with home-hosting on one since I had that problem.

We use VGS to tokenize credit cards. Makes it much easier to switch payment provers.
revicon··on Ask HN: Azure has run out of compute – anyone else affected?
There are specific requirements in Germany that require user data to not leave the country. I believe that was what OP was referring to.
revicon··on How PlanetScale Boost serves SQL queries faster
We’re you using the Aurora Serverless data APIs? Curious if there is something equivalent on PlanetScale.
revicon··on Coming Home to Vim (2010)
This was my experience as well. I really tried to use the vim plugin for vscode but there were too many behavior differences between it and native vim. And VSCode just has too many features that I've grown to love that I just find myself learning the native VSCode bindings and using those most of the time now.

I miss VIM, I really do, but I really only use it these days if I need to ad-hoc modify an individual file while I'm in a terminal somewhere.

Do it!
revicon··on Copyright infringement in AI art
Agreed, per the article “ style and a ‘look and feel’ are not copyrightable”
revicon··on Copyright infringement in AI art
I’m also not a copyright expert, so I wonder about things like if I draw a (crappy) picture of Spider-Man and slap it on a tshirt, can I sell it without violating copyright? I’m sure there’s established law about this kind of thing.
revicon··on The DynamoDB Paper
One big benefit of DynamoDB over RDS on AWS is that the access layer is API based so you don’t have issues with held open connections when accessing via AWS Lambda.

We’re seeing RDS dns hostname resolution errors as well. It’s been happening for an hour and a half now.

This is another example of the blockchain “solution” looking for a problem. There’s nothing in the provided description that requires blockchain in the slightest.
revicon··on Ask HN: Why Blog at All?
I write blog posts to pay back, even a little bit, all the developers out there that bothered to respond to stack overflow questions or posted a blog post with a fix to a tricky issue they thought someone else might run into.

There are countless times over the last 20 years where I was stumped on a problem and a quick google search took me to someone's answer to just the thing I was trying to fix.

If I can be the one providing that answer to just a few people in the future, it's worth it for me to put a few blog posts together and stick them on S3 behind a domain name.

revicon··on How to organize yourself as a solo founder
I’m addition to the other great ideas posted in this thread, I’ll throw out something that has helped me a lot… I have a folder called "Captain's Log" that I constantly post things into. Everytime I hear something on the radio I want to look up, I type a few of the lyrics into a file and save it and it goes into the Captain's Log for perusal later. Everytime I have something I need to remember to do I post a note into the Captain's log and add a "todo" tag to it so I can sort those out when needed. All meeting notes go in there too. When I start coding something I take notes on what I'm working on in a note so that I can go back and remember what I did when I was working on that thing I can't quite remember. I can sort that folder by "date created" and see a log of my life going back in time and I've found it very useful.

revicon··on We don’t use a staging environment
Forcing developers to deal with mocks right from the beginning is critical in my opinion. Unit testing as part of your CI/CD flow needs to be a first priority rather than something that gets thought of later on. Testing locally should be synonymous with running your unit test suite.

Doing your integration testing deployed to a non-production cloud environment is always necessary but should never be a requirement for doing development locally.

I think it stems from the fact that fighting terrorists is asymmetrical warfare. The Russians can go just as hard as the US can, though the US has vastly more military resources and the power of NATO behind it.
