retromario··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
My biggest annoyance with Teams is its shitty search functionality. You search for a topic you discussed with a colleagues a few weeks ago. It'll show you the direct hits, but there's zero way to jump to that point of the conversation and see the context, the message before or after.

It's so infuriating.

retromario··on Downsides of Google Authenticator
I second every part of this comment. I ran into the same issue migrating GA to a new phone, none of my keys went with. Very frustrating experience.

I also switched to OTPAuth, great app, provides encrypted backups and switching to a new phone was seamless. Would absolutely recommend over Google Authenticator.

retromario··on No engineer has ever sued because of constructive post-interview feedback
The way a friend of mine in Germany does it is to send a polite rejection by mail with an offer to discuss details over the phone. Leaves less actionable attack surface while still trying to give constructive feedback.
retromario··on Ask HN: How do we stop the polarization/toxicicity filling the web?
I didn’t respond to the original comment, just to this question:

>> What did he do to call him a bigot?

His track record is long, clear and consistent.

retromario··on Ask HN: How do we stop the polarization/toxicicity filling the web?
Maybe start in this extremely well-sourced article: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/06/trump-r...

It looks great and you pull it off nicely! It immediately reminded me of Tintin.

retromario··on NordVPN confirms it was hacked
Another vote for AirVPN. Good track record, happy customer for 6+ years.
retromario··on I just lost my wallet on the way home from work
France experienced a high amount of bomb attacks in the 70s and 80s, eventually tapering off in the 90s [1]. The aggressive reaction to unattended bags stems from these events.

Which are the other offices? I heard they closed down Metaio after acquiring them a few years back.
retromario··on SIM swap horror story: I've lost decades of data and Google won't help
I encountered the similar problem the last time I upgraded. There are alternatives to Google Authenticator that offer backups and cloud syncs while maintaining security. andOTP on Android and OTP Auth on iOS. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.shadowice.... https://apps.apple.com/us/app/otp-auth/id659877384
retromario··on SIM swap horror story: I've lost decades of data and Google won't help
A good equivalent to andOTP on iOS is OTP Auth (backups, optional cloud syncs, it just works): https://apps.apple.com/us/app/otp-auth/id659877384
retromario··on Buying into the Emacs Platform (2018)
Similar to the two sibling posters, I find pixel-scrolling (particular with the weighted momentum feeling you get on macos) to be more visually comfortable and easier to track.

I found it frustrating in spacemacs that I couldn't get this set up properly (and I'm not even sure if it's possible too). Everything else in emacs was eye-opening and fun.

retromario··on Congress Is About to Ban the US Government from Offering Free Online Tax Filing
Aldi (or Lidl) every year sell a Tax Prep software for 5 euros. Our in-laws buy a copy, install it, then pass it on to us (same key works on multiple PCs). The software's UI could use some...clarity in certain places but it is incredibly full-featured.

We've been happily using it to file our German taxes for years.

retromario··on Ask HN: Amazon delisted me – what do I do?
Yes, make it as easy as possible for the random worker who is reviewing your case to approve a positive resolution. It's unclear if you sent several mails but the last one where you simply attach screenshots of your discussion with the manufacturer requires too much "effort" from the worker to understand the context.

You should include the screenshots as documentation but you should clearly summarize the steps you are taking to address whatever concerns they have. It's tedious and stressful but should make it easier for your case to be resolved.

Good luck.

retromario··on What Working at Stripe Has Been Like
I checked out the list of remote engineering jobs after reading your (fascinating) article but unfortunately they all seem to be restricted to North America. Is this a time zone issue or a legal issue? Are there plans to expand remote jobs to other regions (like Europe)?
retromario··on It’s probably never going to work in German
Yes, as an English speaker living in Germany, this is also something that drives me up the wall, but has also gotten better recently. My personal favorites, the cream of the crop:

* Netflix: full site in English, subtitles (and audio tracks) for all shows available in German, English and several other languages. Only a few edge cases where the source (written) material appearing on-screen has already been hard-translated in.

* Amazon: will let you turn on full English experience, up to and including...English speaking support (both written and verbal). This is truly the cream of the crop in terms of quality of experience.

I really appreciate any German-oriented site that offers English as a possible language in spite of knowing my location. And if somewhere on your servers you already have English available, you would be silly to not make that available world-wide (where it makes sense).

Of course, these are two of the biggest tech companies, so perhaps that speaks to the cost of internationalization.

retromario··on The text of Article 13 and the EU Copyright Directive has been finalised
> Call me crazy, but this does sound like what the "anti-EU far right" takes issue with, more specifically the French-German political control of Europe, beholden to their financial interests.

The irony is that the "anti-EU far right" has helped pushed through this terrible law package. As mentioned in the article (emphasis mine):

> the anti-EU far right is trying to seize this opportunity to promote their narrow-minded nationalist agenda – when in fact without the persistent support of the far-right ENF Group (dominated by the Rassemblement/Front National) the law could have been stopped in the crucial Legal Affairs Committee and in general would not be as extreme as it is today.

The upcoming May EU elections will play a critical role in the future of the EU (and perhaps this law package). Please vote.

retromario··on AWS Transfer for SFTP – Fully Managed SFTP Service for Amazon S3
Ideally the same way we define an EC2 instance, perhaps bound directly to an S3 bucket resource defined in the same script. Ideally reading the config definition from an S3 file that we can update at will.
retromario··on AWS Transfer for SFTP – Fully Managed SFTP Service for Amazon S3
Anyone know if this can be used directly from CloudFormation?
retromario··on Ditching the MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air
In what ways is your new 13 a big step up? Performance? Battery? Screen? I know that with the smaller bezel it's overall more compact than an older 13, but it's still bigger and heavier.

Let's hope that new Macbook arrives next year...

retromario··on Ditching the MacBook Pro for a MacBook Air
I know I'm in the minority but I really wish they had kept the 11' Macbook Air, it had a wonderful compact form factor, super light but could still pack a mean punch as you put an i7 in it. I know the Macbook is meant to fit that slot, but it's just way too underpowered/expensive. My 2014 MBA 11 with an i7 and 8GB is neck to neck performance-wise with the current Macbook, so what's the point of upgrading.

I would even consider the 13 MBA if they offered an i7 configuration. It feels like that was purposefully omitted in order to push buyers towards the Pro.

I hope that both the macbook and new Airs take a similar trajectory to the original Airs. The first iterations (2008-10) were quite weak performance-wise, it was more about Apple planting a flag and saying "this is what the future laptop will look at" and iterating under the hood till they reached it.

After buying a pro and returning it, then seriously eye'ing the new airs, I've fallen back to...buying a new battery for my old 11 Air.

retromario··on A debt-collection machine that’s chewing up small businesses across America
In Germany, the notary is actually required to read out loud the entire contract and make sure each clause is clear, valid and understood by all parties.

I always thought this was a stupid, overly expensive and bureaucratic process when incorporating a company. However, for a house purchase contract it was surprisingly useful (but still ridiculously expensive...notary costs here are more or less a fixed percentage of the transaction worth).
