Salaries in many jobs in the UK have barely increased in the past 15 years, and of those that have, many have not kept up with inflation. It's not the whole picture, but the UK (and it seems Europe generally) is increasingly poor by comparison to the US, and US products too have become increasingly unaffordable for many.
Several years on and I make in 3 days a week what similar senior London based full time employees make in 5. There’s no work scarcity either.
It’s like the the money is there, but workers in the UK are just used to being underpaid and so they put up with continually just getting by.
- Songs won't play. - Buttons become completely unresponsive. - The search won't take any input (can't type in the box) - Songs take 5+ seconds to start playing. - I get a mysterious "you are not authorized to play this song" message.
All I want to do is find and play music, and manage playlists. It's utter trash.
For example, I live less than an hour from London and my total monthly outgoings (including a mortgage) are less than £2,000.
Once the project is delivered, make sure you all sit down and do a retrospective on what went wrong, decide what you’ll change next time, and actually make those changes.
If none of this seems feasible in your organisation any time soon, leave. Don’t waste your time with people who aren’t taking your work seriously.
A bit? It's one giant "it depends" as far as I'm concerned.
I probably bill about 5 hours a day, give or take. The 40 hours I referenced encompasses everything that goes into freelancing including my client work, not just the client work itself.
Work hours seemed an unlikely cause for the burnout to me because I've worked at least that my entire career (and in previous jobs many more hours) without even a hint of burnout. I'll never know the true cause, but I suspect it's a combination of the factors I mentioned in the post.
Thanks for your kind words, and best of luck.
We all need to do much more in addition to just not eating animals. Endless production, consumption and growth the way we’re currently doing it is just completely unsustainable.
