Doing unhappy work at Yahoo probably wasn't unusual in 2008

resize2996··on Cognition (Devin AI) to Acquire Windsurf
This has nothing to do with AI, but might help: All complex software programs are compositions of simpler programs.
resize2996··on Proposed NOAA Budget Kills Program Designed to Prevent Satellite Collisions
The journalist is repeating the framing of one of the subjects of the article, which is fair play.

I suspect the person you're responding to was suggesting your energy could be better channeled to more productive pursuits, rather than aping bluesky-level analysis on an internet forum.

As a citizen of the world, this option absolutely remains available to you. As an extractive capitalist, I imagine you will continue to fuel the populist movements you're analyzing, but reminder: Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

Just to add my own anecdata: My experience with Pixel/GoogleFi support has been some of the worst customer support I've ever experienced, and I have given them boatloads of money.

source: I used to do vendor relations for a large public org where contractors (medium tech companies) would routinely try to skirt the line on what they had to deliver. I would rather deal with them than GoogleFi, because in that situation there was a certain point where I could give up and hand it off to our lawyers.

I didn't realize _The People's History of the United States_ had such direct precedents.
resize2996··on US Supreme Court limits federal judges' power to block Trump orders
Where do you suppose that power goes, if not in the hands of the federal government? Do you think it neatly trickles down to the people?
resize2996··on A receipt printer cured my procrastination
Then if "Add 10 items" seems to be sitting around for a while, I change it to "Add 5 items".

The part where I end up finishing the whole thing doesn't always happen, but breaking it down into chunks that I can power my way through even if I'm in the worst mood with the worst working conditions at least lets me accomplish a small thing and get a better sense of the task for the next time I try. Sometimes "Add 5 Items" actually turns into "Add 2 items and realize you only need 7 total items."

Some of my procrastination is "I haven't started the task because I can't completely visualize it, I can't completely visualize it because I haven't started the task."

resize2996··on Knowledge Management in the Age of AI
Of course, but there comes a point when doing long division by hand no longer adds to my understanding.
resize2996··on What makes a good engineer also makes a good engineering organization (2024)
No? I could do several other things if I just wanted money. I do tech work because that is what I am called to do.

resize2996··on Google is giving Amazon a leg up in digital book sales
Yes. Fraud protection for online purchases is fine. I have certain cards set up in a way that I will basically hand them out to anyone. Data protection is not a solved problem in that way.

weird ad hominem, but you do you.

I'm trying to figure out this logical inconsistency: "AI has made my workers more productive, therefore my workers are worth less."

My general theory is that there is more than enough engineering work to go around

resize2996··on QModem 4.51 Source Code
My first "real internet connection" (not prodigy or compuserve or local BBS) was connecting to the county library's gopher server via modem (Likely with QModem), navigating out to other gopher servers and then being able to telnet from there.

resize2996··on Has the decline of knowledge work begun?
How's that diesel truck research going? I've thought about getting into auto repair as a hobby, but wrenching on modern cars would basically be my day-job with added wire fiddling.
resize2996··on Has the decline of knowledge work begun?
It is true that ~70% is a good idea, but most charging controllers are designed to give a full charge because they have no way of knowing when the user wants a 100% battery because they're about to go out or 70% because they're going to be plugged in for a while.

This can be changed in software, setting it to 70-80% or having a toggle is best for the battery.

resize2996··on The A.I. Monarchy
I don't think it's trite at all. The US electoral system is insane. President is chosen by the same few states every time. I haven't had a vote for president that has mattered ever, and I'm kinda old and have voted in several states.
