> The exchanges.
Any exchange stupid enough to enact such a policy would go out of business immediately. Their competitors would eat them alive.
If healthcare in America has shown anything it's that Americans will proudly throw other Americans under the bus if it suits themselves.
I'd question whether the people you are prioritising care about you at all.
e.g. at one end of the spectrum is Java, which everything has to be a class. Even if you want to write a function, it has to be expressed as a static method in a class. In Java it's just not possible to implement ideas in the most obvious way, it has to be done in the Java way.
Conversely, TypeScript was designed to work with JavaScript (which is very dynamic), so it has a very capable structural type system. The productivity penalty is negligible.
A long-haul flight is so much more pleasant with wifi. There's only so many movies I can watch (for me, 1 or 2) before I get bored out of my mind.
It can get lonely on a plane if you are traveling alone. The people around you aren't always willing or able to talk (they may be asleep, don't speak English, or are preoccupied with a movie), so you may end up sitting for extended periods with nobody to talk to.
Being able to chat to friends while in the air makes the experience more comfortable than any seat ever could.
Probably not legal though.
At the risk of stating the obvious, when you eat a meal, all of it goes to the same place. So as long as the meal as a whole provides sufficient nutrition (and if you are eating a varied diet then it absolutely will do), no part of it can be described as "empty calories".
It's like going to a seafood restaurant that has live lobsters, vs a seafood restaurant that uses already dead lobsters. Sure both are lobsters, but one is better than the other.
You could call it Hershey Syndrome. Hershey's chocolate is not very good. In fact, it tastes like vomit. Yet the entire US has grown up eating Hershey bars.
Hershey don't compete on quality, they compete on "Hersheyness".
Likewise, McDonalds can't simply improve quality, because they would be losing their very essence in the process.
Waymo want a system that has a zero accident rate, even if that means it can't operate in the rain.
But it's hard to convince people to hand over their money. SaaS works because the profits are reinvested into marketing.
Also no politician would ever support this.
This is just not true at all. In most of the world, looking after one's parents is not seen as a chore or a hardship, but basic empathy for one's parents.
When you grow old, would you rather live in a multigenerational household - vs being alone or in some kind of facility?
A static type system exists to prevent some classes of bugs and enable code completion.
However whenever "soundness" becomes a design goal, it enevitably usurps everything else (because it is an objective binary goal) and leads to languages that cease to value other things like simplicity or directness.
A type system can never catch all bugs and reliable programs ultimately depend on a human being understanding and verifying the code. The most important goal - if you value reliable programs - is that the code is intelligible to people.
My point is not that articles on the internet are useless. But there is a certain tunnel vision in these discussions where we forget there are other _even better_ ways to spend our time.
Whether you want education or entertainment, paying $x/month to Google is not the right way to achieve it. Go paintballing instead.
Articles on the internet exist primarily as free entertainment.
If I am going to spend money on entertainment, there are much more fulfilling options.
In other words, even Lyft's best case scenario would be a huge step down for Uber.
