reset-password··on A court just blew up internet law because it thinks YouTube isn’t a website
> They are not websites,” Jones asserted of websites

Of course the judge in question (Edith Jones, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit) is 73 years old.

reset-password··on Police claims to have fingerprinted computer based on printed document
One other way this trail can be made is simply by installing the drivers. For example I noticed that when you complete the driver installation for a Brother color laser printer, the installer opens the default browser and navigates to brother.com/something/SERIAL_NO_OF_PRINTER. I am assuming that on the other end they're capturing the IP, fingerprinting the browser, and logging it all forever.
reset-password··on Tell HN: AT&T disabled phone numbers and accounts of users using the old phones
I thought this was the case too but after falling victim to these tactics myself, AT&T began to actively hold my numbers hostage. In my experience AT&T requires you set up a "TRANSFER PIN" that you give to the other carrier when porting, but in my case have repeatedly rejected the request with the correct PIN.

AT&T is a incredibly consumer-hostile company that does not play by the rules, can and will hold your phone numbers hostage, and as shown here will arbitrarily disable devices when it is convenient for them.

reset-password··on 75 Percent of car buyers don’t want features locked behind subscriptions
If it becomes ubiquitous I'd expect an underground market to form around activating features which are physically present but locked out by software.

And now I'm curious as to what the legal consequences could/would be of something like that, especially when you go to resell the vehicle later.

reset-password··on Tell HN: Dropbox user age verification feature can lock your account
I've gotten into the habit of being born on January 1, 1970. Seems like a good enough date to me.
reset-password··on Google Domains is out of beta
Judging by my own initial thoughts to this and the confirming commentary, I'd say that Google sure has built quite a reputation.
reset-password··on My transition from Windows to Linux in an anti-customer age
For anyone else in the "thinking about it" to "preparing for it" stage of the switch, I've been getting myself ready by switching to cross-platform software one piece at a time while still daily driving a Windows machine.

In past failed attempts to switch it just was too jarring for everything to be different all at once. But now that I've already replaced all the Windows exclusive software in my life, I expect that next time I try full-timing on Linux again it will feel more like visiting the next town over than it will visiting a foreign country.

reset-password··on State Bar of California addresses breach of confidential data
Why is it so impossible for these people/organizations to accept that they made a mistake and own up to it? The entire response by the State Bar of California is nothing but a deflection of blame that rests solely on themselves and their chosen vendor(s).

What are they going to do next, call Missouri's governor and ask for the playbook to follow? The humans behind the scenes at the bar are looking incredibly pathetic here.

reset-password··on Cryptonomicon: Among the Bitcoin maximalists
Why do you think that it is a 10-90 split like that? I think it's 90-10 the other way. I have no proof but it sounds like you don't either.
