resalisbury··on Too Many Workers Are Trapped by Non-Competes
Occupational licensing is another form of non-compete agreements. Only instead of the employer preventing employees from moving to a a new company, occupational licensing prevents professionals from (1) crossing state lines or moving into new professions.

resalisbury··on Norway's electric cars zip to new record: almost a third of all sales
Reframe "Carbon Taxes" as a "Carbon Dividends" and you might be able to change the psychology of the populace. The recently failed bi-partisan Carbon Tax bill attempted to do just that by establishing a revenue neutral carbon tax where the proceeds were distributed as "dividends" directly to citizens.

But I agree, getting popular support has been very hard and will continue to be problematic.

Ars Technica writes that although this bill failed, it will help shape the debate to come.

Oh and Exxon Mobile spent $1mm to support the group lobbying for the Carbon Tax.

resalisbury··on Norway's electric cars zip to new record: almost a third of all sales
Electric car subsidies are generally regressive [0] and Norway is no exception.

Even worse, Norway subsidizes electric cars, in part, by defunding public transit. This seems silly from an environmental perspective, but it's nice if you're a wealthy Norwegian and want to avoid paying tolls while owning a luxury car.

"[The environmental spokesman for the Labor party] estimates that Oslo loses about [$30mm USD equivalent] a year from electric cars avoiding toll payments. At the same time, about [$80mm USD equivalent] from toll booths goes towards paying for public transport each year."[1]

There are much more effective ways to decarbonize transportation than subsidizing cars, electric or otherwise. The most compelling policy tool we have is a Carbon Tax. There is near universal consensus among economists on this fact. [2]

resalisbury··on Using Deep Learning to Weaponize Controversy – Slate Star Codex [Fiction]
"Delete Facebook. Delete Twitter. Throw away your cell phone. Unsubscribe from the newspaper. Tell your friends and relatives not to discuss politics or society. If they slip up, break off all contact.

Then, buy canned food. Stockpile water. Learn to shoot a gun. If you can afford a bunker, get a bunker.

Because one day, whoever keeps feeding us Scissor statements is going to release one of the bad ones."

resalisbury··on Large home libraries may have a long-term impact on proficiency: study
I could just say correlation != causation and move on.

...but I thought I would at least give it 5 minutes of googling.

Here's the first randomized controlled trial I could find testing whether access to libraries had any impact on literacy. TLDR (for this one study): access to libraries does not improve literacy.

"We conduct a randomized controlled trial of an Indian school library program. Overall, the program had no impact on students' scores on a language skills test administered after 16 months. The estimates are sufficiently precise to rule out effects larger than 0.053 and 0.037 standard deviations, based on the 95 and 90 percent confidence intervals. This finding is robust across individual competencies and subsets of the sample. The method of treatment, however, does seem to matter--physical libraries have no effect, while visiting librarians actually reduce test scores."

I will repeat the last line "visiting librarians actually reduce test scores." That seems counter intuitive. Maybe we should write articles w/ titles "LIBRARIES INCREASE ILLITERACY." That would be a dump article to write, but only slightly more dumb than the current article ;)

p.s. I like libraries.

resalisbury··on Large home libraries may have a long-term impact on proficiency: study
Growing up in homes advantaged enough to have large libraries could indicate you are, in fact, advantaged!

resalisbury··on Slack Is Buying HipChat from Atlassian
"Taking out a competitor is good for Slack, There’s fewer choices for people.” - Stewart Butterfield in the above article.

When are tech CEO's going to realize it's bad to sound like a monopolist b/c anti-trust?

I tend to agree with Ben Thompson of Stratechery that one of the best ways to thwart emerging monopolies and preserve choice for consumers it to prevent companies from acquiring competitors. Although today Microsoft is the goliath and Slack is the david, in today's world David's grow up very very fast...

resalisbury··on Google exploits loophole to help employees evade taxes on $36,500 / year
Even if you don't abolish these, you could at least cap the total contribution (and even lift the annual contribution limit). A cap of $1.0 million per individual would allow for a safe withdrawal rate of approx. $40k / year (social security income would provide a further boost to that). You could move the cap higher or lower as you see fit.

There are over 150,000 individuals w/ a 401k balance over $1.0 million; there is little social benefit in providing millionaires with even more in a tax advantaged savings.

resalisbury··on Google exploits loophole to help employees evade taxes on $36,500 / year
author here :hi:, yes the policy section is a bit wishy washy and short on details. I think you would grandfather in existing accounts, but not allow additional contributions starting at some point in the future.

edit: I've updated the article to add a little more detail to the policy recommendation.

resalisbury··on California to become first U.S. state mandating solar on new homes
What's another $30k in home costs. That's less thank 1% of my $3.2 million home in Palo Alto ;)

Whatever you do just make sure the neighborhood is zoned single family. Multi family just doesn't have enough roof space.

resalisbury··on Electric Scooters Are Causing Havoc?
San Francisco is a continual disappointment to me in it's regulatory approach of banning things.

Allow docess bikes? Nope let's mostly ban them but grant Uber subsidiary, Jump, a monopoly on operating a very small number.

Allow electric scooters? Nope let's ban them!

Have dynamic pricing for parking in the Richmond? Yes, but let's severly restrict how dynamic it can be and have a huge freakout.

Build more houses? Nope let's downzone and empower local obstructionism.

resalisbury··on Electric Scooters Are Causing Havoc?
Havoc? We dedicate 50% of space downtown to cars. But it's "havoc" when another form of transit takes 0.01% of sidewalk space.

That said riding on sidewalks should be discouraged, and individual offenders ticketed. But we should also create more biking like infrastructure in which these scooters can operate.

resalisbury··on Ask HN: What are some tech companies that do not use an open floor plan?
This is partly driven by costs. Where rents per square foot are less, more companies have opted to have offices.

Just like how in Mountain View some Googlers live in the parking lot. It's not cause they think parking lots are hip, space is expensive.

resalisbury··on Uber and Lyft drivers' median hourly wage is just $3.37, report finds
The economist behind the study admits this is wrong and has adj the figure to $8.55 from $3.37. Here is the response he posted.

He also admits to using "donated" labor from students. $0 is even less than $3.37 ;)
