res0nat0r··on Fed expects to launch long-awaited Faster Payments System by 2023
Some things the government does doesn't have to be profitable, it does them because it is a good thing for a government to do.
res0nat0r··on A third of Pakistan is underwater from floods, climate chief says
Hopefully we're still not trying to be contrarians around climate change just because it's hard to imagine or scary, since it's obvious and affecting things around us every year.

Another insurance company is leaving Florida: https://www.orlandosentinel.com/business/real-estate/os-bz-i...

1/3 of Pakistan is currently underwater: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/pakistan-floods-un-appeal...

Greenland: https://apnews.com/article/science-oceans-glaciers-greenland...

> Greenland’s rapidly melting ice sheet will eventually raise global sea level by at least 10.6 inches (27 centimeters) -- more than twice as much as previously forecast — according to a study published Monday.

res0nat0r··on A third of Pakistan is underwater from floods, climate chief says
When a "100 year storm" starts happening every 2-3 years and devastating local economies, you can attribute that to climate change.
res0nat0r··on Asdf Performance
Asdf is fantastic, that and Homebrew are the first two things I install on any new Mac.
res0nat0r··on An incident impacting 5M accounts and private information on Twitter
You can't prove a negative.
res0nat0r··on Tell HN: Spotify Premium is full of Ads
It says right in the popup they're suggesting artists based on who you've listened to, so it is relevant based on the number crunching they've done from millions of listeners and billions of datapoints.
res0nat0r··on Tell HN: Spotify Premium is full of Ads
Meh. I think this happens to me and I get one once every 4 months or so, either way seems like just non issue to complain about, especially when it rarely even happens.
res0nat0r··on Tell HN: Spotify Premium is full of Ads
I've had Spotify for 10+ years and have no ads. The link you're pasting looks like random popups suggesting similar artists or bands you've listened to in the past notifying you of stuff you may like. This doesn't seem like it should be considered an ad.
res0nat0r··on Double Commander
I also recommend Everything. It's the best file searching app I've found for Windows that fits my searching style, just type a regex and give me what I want.

res0nat0r··on Double Commander
I've really liked Altap Salamnder for Windows. Lots of features, and freeware too. https://www.altap.cz/
res0nat0r··on Coding as a greybeard
Don't underestimate the fact that many companies also like younger workers because it is easier to pressure them to work more hours than they should. Less chances of kids or a family they need to attend to, and higher chances of falling for the "office perks" which is a ruse to keep you in the office as much as possible.
res0nat0r··on Senate passes bipartisan bill to subsidize U.S.-made semiconductor chips
If they cared about popular will, almost every GOP controlled state in the USA wouldn't be as we speak trying to implement the most extreme abortion bans they can.

Mitch has said a national ban is a possibility: https://twitter.com/foxnews/status/1523246341173952517

Pence has said this should happen: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/06/24/abortion-...

Popular will doesn't matter when you don't need to listen to popular will to keep power. If your insane, extreme base is all you have to pander to to keep power, the GOP is doing just that.

res0nat0r··on AWS us-east-2 outage
This is true, at the AWS account level. us-east-2a for my account may map to the internal use2-az1, but in your account us-east-2a may map internally to use2-az2.
res0nat0r··on Senate passes bipartisan bill to subsidize U.S.-made semiconductor chips
The GOP in two years from now if they control Congress will ignore the filibuster and pass a national abortion ban at the federal level at the first opportunity. Anyone believing these folks haven't been lying or won't be complete hypocrites by now are living in an alternate reality.
res0nat0r··on Fake Dog for Home Security
This is specifically for when he isn't home as mentioned in first sentence of the article.

> I set up a fake dog that barks if my surveillance cameras are triggered while I'm out of town on vacation.

Also owning a gun actually increases your chances of homicide at home.

res0nat0r··on Am I an idiot for wanting a dumber phone?
I'd just like a nice Android OS based phone with a BlackBerry style real keyboard. Please.
res0nat0r··on Google fires engineer who called its AI sentient
I'm sure google gives some leeway in eccentricity for this type of job position, but now it's become more harmful than helpful, so they let him go.
res0nat0r··on Congress' push to regulate Big Tech is fizzling out
Eh I mean some of them are though. Manchin and Sinema get the biggest hate, but there are others who agree with him who are just not as obvious or loud about it.

I mean abortion rights which were settled for 50 years just got completely destroyed, and if the entire Democratic party actually cared about this issue, they'd enshrine it as a right in law with 51 votes, but they won't because a handful secretly agree that abortion should be illegal.

res0nat0r··on A brief history of nobody wants to work anymore
Most folks outside the USA (where I live) that I've worked with / spoken to say that we're completely insane and it's embarrassing that we allow the incredible amount of gun violence that we do. All my coworkers overseas think it's unreal and really intolerable that we allow the level of gun violence that we do.

People need to quit embarrassing themselves trying to somehow reason away why the USA is an outlier via some kind of cope metric. It's the guns.

res0nat0r··on SEC issues more than $17M award to a whistleblower
I'm sure if the whistleblower thinks their name should be public, they'll do an interview somewhere soon. It's good the SEC doesn't treat this like you're winning the lottery, and requiring you do a press conference holding a big check for free PR for Powerball.
res0nat0r··on Show HN: tere – A Faster Alternative to cd+ls
Cargo.lock is the wrong place to be looking, there really are only 7 direct dependencies, https://github.com/mgunyho/tere/blob/master/Cargo.toml#L14-L...

The deps for each of these packages is really out of the authors hands, this is really the same for any programming language though which need to pull in dependencies of their own.

res0nat0r··on Ask HN: Developer Workstation Backups
Since the only thing I care about is my homedir, I just use restic + s3. Add a bunch of CACHEDIR.TAG files to big dirs I don't want to back up, then just run it regularly, or could set via some type of cron.

https://restic.net/

res0nat0r··on Ask HN: Is VSCode becoming too complex after each update?
It's still easy to use. I can easily find add-ons via the market and get them running doing mostly everything I need in a couple clicks. I disabled the news pop-up because it's annoying. Remote wsl / codespace integration just works.

I need to sort out getting my setting sync working so I don't have to keep searching every 6 months how to turn off paren matching when I use a new OS or cloud vscode ide.

res0nat0r··on Former Japan PM Shinzo Abe Unconscious After Shooting; Man in Custody
Shizno Abe has died: https://twitter.com/myhlee/status/1545329491362598914

Terrible.

res0nat0r··on FedEx to close data centers, retire mainframes
I'm assuming FedEx wants to be in the package delivery business, not the owning compute hardware, datacenter, cooling and power business.
res0nat0r··on The local news crisis is deepening America's divides
"Crime in Chicago" is a rightwing racist dog-whistle now, and so common that is a reliable standby they use now when wanting to fearmonger.
res0nat0r··on Atlassian is 20 years old and unprofitable
There are lots of alternatives out there looking for marksetshare. I've not personally used ClickUp but it looks fantastic just from their screenshots: https://clickup.com/features

res0nat0r··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
The GOP are going to immediately nuke the filibuster and ban abortion at the federal level if they control the government after the next election. Pence has even said this out loud recently. It will likely make no exceptions for rape or incest either. The majority of the country is against this.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/06/24/abortion-...

res0nat0r··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
There is absolutely *zero* reason to rule that the EPA, which has existed since the 70's has no authority to regulate the environment. None.

I'm attributing the worst to these people, because we know who they are. They want the government to have no ability to at all to put any restrictions on capital at all costs. They're simply doing it now because they have the raw power to do so.

res0nat0r··on Supreme Court limits EPA’s power to cut emissions
The entire point was to kick this to Congress, which they know can't pass anything, thus achieving their entire goal of allowing companies to pollute and do whatever they want to make an additional buck.
