rerx··on In Japan, a growing number of car-sharing users don’t rent cars for driving
It looks like there's a price per kilometer driven when you book a "pack" of hours (going by Google Translate here).
rerx··on Electric cars 'will not solve transport problem,' report warns
Some drivers indeed use the existence of such lanes as extra fuel for their harassment, which sucks: Very often these lanes are objectively dangerous for cyclists because they are way easier to be "overlooked" at intersections.

While driving culture generally is terrible in Germany, in my opinion, with people driving way to aggressively, the situation may be improving gradually. The idea of having to keep some distance when passing cyclists seems to have reached some drivers. (From court rulings 1.5 meters is the absolute minimum)

rerx··on Electric cars 'will not solve transport problem,' report warns
This is not true. In Germany bike lanes are only required to be used when there is a sign saying so (and when they usable and safe, which you cannot expect, sadly). By default bike lanes are optional.
rerx··on AI Models Predict Breast Cancer with Radiologist-Level Accuracy
My point was that ensembles of deep neural networks are commonly used and yield higher accuracies.
rerx··on AI Models Predict Breast Cancer with Radiologist-Level Accuracy
Why shouldn't you employ an ensemble of deep neural networks?
rerx··on Why are large companies so difficult to rescue (regarding internal technology)
I guess because of this quote FTA:

> And what happens when the company gets a new CEO? What if she decides to break up the company again?

rerx··on Details about MIDI 2.0
Indeed: Pre-USB "game ports" doubled as MIDI interfaces. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_port
rerx··on India will soon overtake China to become the most populous country in the world
> And if you count the EU as one country, which is increasingly true

I guess you read different news than I do.

rerx··on Ask HN: Do you know of any good product taking advantage of NLP?
Neural machine translation (NLP with deep neural networks) has become quite good and is increasingly put into useful products.

(Disclaimer: I work on DeepL translator)

rerx··on Unofficial new Berlin rapid transit route map
I dislike how this map is presented as almost official. The author does not seem to have any relation to Berlin traffic authorities. This should be framed clearly as a proposal.
rerx··on Nvidia to Acquire Mellanox for $6.9B
State of the art deep learning models are becoming larger and larger and at some point it makes sense to distribute them over multiple GPUs because they would not fit into a single GPU's memory. At the same time training can be sped up dramatically by blowing up the mini batch size in a synchronized training regime, again requiring multiple GPUs. So the trend is towards "model parallelism" and "data parallelism" at the same time. Once you need more GPUs than you can put on a single PCI Express bus, you need a fast interconnect between servers. Infiniband seems to be the best solution at this time. Nvidia GPUs can already communicate ridiculously fast with remote GPUs via RDMA if there is an Infiniband connection. It makes a lot of sense for Nvidia to push into this direction to provide integrated solutions.
rerx··on Implementing a Neural Network from Scratch in Python

rerx··on Indonesia reports reduced deforestation, triggering carbon payment from Norway
Norway's wealth comes from exporting oil and gas. That's not very indirect.
rerx··on Apple’s Latest Macs Have a Serious Audio Glitching Bug
With Lenovo you would get the 3 years onsite warranty with accidental damage protection at the time of purchase. Then a technician will come to your office or home and to replace the broken parts of your Thinkpad. That beats having to go to an Apple store IMO.
rerx··on Best Display for Programming? (2017)
I love this screen, too. Sometimes a bit more real estate than its 27 inches could be useful. But my biggest gripe is really that my late 2016 Macbook Pro with a 2GB Radeon Pro 450 often seems to have too little horse power to drive all these pixels smoothly....
rerx··on The 773M Record “Collection #1” Data Breach
Enpass has such a feature too. I just had it check all my passwords in the light of this new breach.
rerx··on Most of What We Read on the Internet is Written by Insane People
The German Wikipedia is large and sees a lot of activity. Articles about topics relating mostly to Germany, Austria or Switzerland are usually better than the English ones. Other articles are often somewhat biased towards a readership from those country, which is actually helpful if you live there.

Lower English language fluency in the general population, compared to the Netherlands or Scandinavia, supports this of course. But also the fact that German remains a scholarly language to this day (in the humanities but also in some branches of engineering).

rerx··on Most of What We Read on the Internet is Written by Insane People
> I attemped to create a page about a slightly obscure file format with all the information I had found while developing with it.

One of the core principles of Wikipedia is "No original research". Your proposed article sounds like it was just that. The Wikipedia editors would rather have you share that research in a blog post or similar.

rerx··on Magdeburg Hemispheres
The city has a weird fascination with people called "Otto". Equally revered is Otto I, Holy Roman Emperor, who a 1000+ years ago made Magdeburg his city of residence.
rerx··on Ask HN: Books you plan to read in 2019?
Here’s a few:

- chapters 4 and 5 of SICP

- Fowler: Refactoring, 2nd Edition

- Gehl: Cities for People

- Cohen: The Book of Numbers

- Drnaso: Sabrina

rerx··on Compiz: Ubuntu Desktop's little known best friend
The Czech / Slovak word for "where" seems to be even more significant: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=Compiz,k...
rerx··on Firefox 64 Released
Does it come with Mac performance improvements?
rerx··on Open Location Code
To reliably triangulate elevation from GPS data you need quite a lot of satellites. Air pressure gives a better signal, but obviously needs to be calibrated for weather etc.
rerx··on Goodbye, EdgeHTML
Late 2016 15 inch Macbook Pro, LG 5k screen with the scaling set one tick into the "more space" direction. With Firefox performance is still significantly worse than with Chrome. This is a real bummer, I really miss tree style tabs.
rerx··on Introduction to Distributed Training of Neural Networks
The asynchronous parameter server based approach to distributed training just does not make any sense in a cluster of GPUs. Communication overhead would be massive. Synchronous training with the ring-allreduce method of Horovod etc. is the way to go.
rerx··on Amp – A complete text editor for the terminal
Run Emacs in Evil mode or similar and you get modal editing inside a special editor mode. If anything, Emacs is an extra-modal editor. :)
rerx··on Amp – A complete text editor for the terminal
> Vim is already the best and most customizable modal editor

Weird statement. "Best" is up to debate, but "most customizable" is definitely Emacs.

I cannot really imagine a really good non-modal programmer's editor. Surely it should behave differently when editing Python compared to editing HTML?

rerx··on Dead sperm whale found in Indonesia had ingested '6kg of plastic'
> 93% of plastic polluting the world's oceans comes from 10 rivers.

This statements contradicts your article, which states: "A recent study estimates that more than a quarter of all that waste could be pouring in from just 10 rivers, eight of them in Asia." Your 10 listed rivers contribute 93% of the plastic waste brought into the ocean _by rivers_.

Also see this breakdown by country: https://www.statista.com/chart/12211/the-countries-polluting...

Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam each bring more marine plastic waste into the ocean than Egypt, but there is not a single river carrying it like the Nile.

rerx··on KDevelop 5.3 released
How does KDevelop compare to Qt Creator as a general purpose C++ IDE?
rerx··on Die Threads: Python async code [video]
I missed some discussion of how this is built on top of async/await.

Edit: Here is a recording of the talk where you can both see the slides and the speaker: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOyJiN3yGfU
