replax··on Ask HN: What's the easiest way to get started modding Quake2 or similar?
You could also try to go into developing/modding a game called Xonotic. while it's based on the Q3 engine, it looks really good and has an active developer community! it's fantastic really :)

replax··on OpenNote – an open web-based alternative to Microsoft OneNote and EverNote
Also I'd pay money for a very good OneNote (clone) for Linux! OneNote just has no competition...
replax··on Ask HN: Your ideal laptop?
actually i have seen a considerable number of hp laptops which also have a trackpoint. not sure they compare to thinkpads on other accounts though. but they didn't look bad..
replax··on iPad Air
I don't think that they'll add multiuser support because then the incentive for e.g. each family member getting their own idevice would be less. instead people might get a family ipad...
replax··on Ask HN: What Coursera/Udacity/edX classes are you taking?
I am in Cousera's Cryptography I course, just out of interest mostly and it doesn't dissappoint so far :)!
replax··on 30 Window Managers in 30 Days
Hi! i think awesome wm, yes that's the name (and it also is awesome) comes close to your needs. actually, i can't believe that they did not test it. it's really popular in arch linux circles. :)
replax··on Ask HN: What SSL certificate provider are you using and why?
I also use startssl because their cert's are for free when you only have one non-commmercial domain!
replax··on Ask HN: Best laptop/computer, OS, IDE/text editor for development?
I am using a Thinkpad x220 with arch and never had any problems whatsoever. Except that I had to set some key functionality myself (volume keys etc.), it almost worked perfectly right out of the box.

Also, i had less problems with arch than other distros, but more importantly, if you had problems it was significantly easier to fix under arch because you knew how everything worked.

replax··on MIT Startup Bootcamp: Livestream
Well, they just referenced to Hacker News: "We have a post on Hacker News, if you could upvote that [...] that would be great"

So I hope someone is reading it and it gets better after the break :)

replax··on Using GNU Stow to manage your dotfiles
uAs I ubderstood, systemd only uses symlinks. Any time you enable a service, systemd executes ln -s ..systemd.. ...service ...
replax··on Why is WinPhone a failure but OSX a success?
I am not sure I agree. Many design companies and advertisement copmanies I know charge extra if their project has to involve anything to be done on a mac. eg if the client wants a mac compatible file, final cut project etc, because of the added overhead as macs apparently don't play nice with other systems.

also, they dont have any advantage over a dedicated windows machine anymore stability wise.

replax··on Leap Motion: Amazing, Revolutionary, Useless
sorry, when writing about the kinect I assumed the new one. even though it's not available yet, it is more compareable to the leap than the old kinect, because of it's age :D
replax··on Leap Motion: Amazing, Revolutionary, Useless
Well, as kinect already is capable of tracking your fingers, i am not sure the leap would be very useful. rather a slightly better kinect..

replax··on Deutsche Telekom, Web.de and GMX launch "E-mail made in Germany" initiative
They assume that you write your email on their web interface, to which you connect over https. and when they send your mail to anotjer server, they do so over a ssl encryption.

of course, if you use an email application, you can enable/disble ssl/tls if you wish to do so.

replax··on ASK HN: What's your setup?
you have one normal drive bay for a 2.5inch ssd/hd and then you also have a msata connection below the keyboard next to the wifi card. it doubles as a pcie bus in which you could put a mobile broadband card or a msata ssd such as this one:

replax··on ASK HN: What's your setup?
Thinkpad x220, 8gb RAM, i7, 2xSSD and run ArchLinux on it with Awesome WM, which is a really really great tiling window manager. At home I plug into a 23in screen, mouse and keyboard, which works really well.
replax··on What a 600,000-megapixel-wide picture looks like
Hi! Thanks a lot for makeing the Image, truly a great piece!

I have a question, actually concerning the mori tower building: Where did you take it from? From the very top where you can go outside? Problem would be, that you couldn't go to the very edge of the building, or were you somehow able to?

And, do you maybe have a "behind the scenes" video of some sort, or just a few shots showing how you are working :D?

Thanks

replax··on Mailpile: Let’s take email back
Sorry for the off-topic

what i understood from reading the book making friends and influencing people, i thought that the "friends" he refers to are Customers/Business contacts.

which is often a lot off from our definition of friends (or at least mine...)

replax··on NSA director heckled on stage at Black Hat security conference
Exactly! Actually, Alexander was asked the Question of NSA datacollection after his talk, basically it went down like this:

Q: "[..]Does the NSA really keep a file on anyone? [...]"

A: "[..] Frist, no, we don't [...]"

Absolutely astonishing!

replax··on NSA director heckled on stage at Black Hat security conference
Wow, I am really, really surprised. Especially as Gen. Alexander gave the keynote speech to DEFCON last year, and explicitly said, when asked after his speech:

Q: "[..]Does the NSA really keep a file on anyone? [...]"

A: "[..] Frist, no, we don't [...]"

Absolutely astonishing!

replax··on Ask HN: Any startups working to capitalize on the coming privacy boom?
A friend just told me about zenmate.io , however, i dont see their advantage over a vpn, aside that it's free for now. big drawback: you dont control it, so you have to Trust them with security..

replax··on The Smears Against Edward Snowden Have Begun
As far as I know, and according to noam Chomsky, the NYT is good journalism defined the "American" way, for it always paints the US as "the great, always correct" freedom fighters.

Where was the NYT coverage when: The US vetoed UN ban on nuclear weapon development? Where was it when it vetoed UN ban on weapons from outer space? Where was it when the US intentionally shot down a commercial Iranian airliner?

yes, exactly, it was non existent.

a good read with a lot more information and a lot of sources also is Noam Chomsky's book: Understanding Power: The Indispensible Chomsky, truly a great read!

replax··on Xonotic 0.7 released - New maps, animation blending and much much more
I agree, Xonotic is a great game and a lot of fun. Also it is highly competitive. It is also a blast at most lan parties where it's been played.

Only thing Xonotic really lacks are active players - typical chicken and egg problem. Although it already got better. And servers are online en masse. Maybe Xonotic's lack of active players is a result of somewhat overcomplicated accessibility for less computer savy gamers, as the set-up (ingame) and the heaps of options are a little bit too much and confusing.

Actually, I think it would be nice if the game starts into a "beginner" mode, which promts for basic things intuitively. The game does it already for Playername and such but important settings such as Field of View are hard to find. Well, it's open source so maybe I should be looking into that :)
