repeekad··on Scriptc by Vercel: TypeScript-to-Native compiler, no JavaScript engine in binary
Some of us don’t like Spotify, Slack, Discord, and a simple notes app taking 1-2GB of RAM each..
repeekad··on Show HN: I simulated closing the Strait of Hormuz on real oil trade data
China hides its stockpile numbers, and estimates are only what we can see. After buying loads of sanctioned oil for stockpiles, they are perfectly positioned to take advantage of trumps blunders in the straight and likely will get to set the price of oil if they aren’t already..
repeekad··on Don't Take the Black Pill [video]
If the engineers were right the bill will come due on that tech debt eventually. Likely when that happens the company will just spend more than they needed to fixing the issues and no one will be around to say I told you so.
repeekad··on Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.5 Flash Cyber
Sure, but then why wouldn’t I use GLM 5.2 at cost or K3?

I guess that’s the big question, will people pay a big margin long term to use their end products / models or will AI tokens be commoditized by many competing players. For coding if I had to pay API costs I’d switch in a heartbeat, enterprise maybe more reluctant?

repeekad··on New US homeownership measure puts people first
China and their ghost cities of unoccupied high rises would say otherwise
repeekad··on Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.5 Flash Cyber
Aren’t the subscriptions extremely subsidized and burning cash for Anthropic and OpenAI? A reasonable explanation is they’re simply abstaining from the war of attrition, especially given cheaper comparable models are breaking the illusion that the “frontier of intelligence” has any kind of per token margin.
repeekad··on New US homeownership measure puts people first
Why does being in a city “naturally” mean less home ownership? More demand and higher prices yes, but you also should be earning more and dense housing projects should be trivial to justify. It’s legislation all the way down, politicians protect the interests of the wealthy who want to rent seek regardless of location. Look at how mamdani got a common sense luxury home tax in NYC, before that ultra wealthy owned multiple homes just because they could.
repeekad··on A Koi Pond Mosaic Made from 10 Pounds of 3D Printer Waste
Isn’t plastic nearly free as a raw material as a by product of fossil fuel production? I was always told it’s the opposite, plastic bags are better for the environment if disposed of properly because they’re so light weight to transport, didn’t need to be farmed, and companies basically give away the raw material because it would be more expensive to dispose of. A cotton bag needs to be reused upwards 1000x to be less impactful, or was I bamboozled?

Why is the primary image blurry on mobile but high res if I rotate my phone horizontal?...
repeekad··on Minecraft: Java Edition now uses SDL3
Are snapshots explicitly a beta channel? Or do users get auto updates to them? Testing for bugs in prod shouldn’t be acceptable unless users expect bugs in exchange for getting latest features early in something like a beta channel
repeekad··on Searchable field-level encryption on Supabase with CipherStash
Careful, they’ll take “gold plated compliance security” and use it in sales pitches
repeekad··on The state of open source AI
Meta is selling their now excess compute, other compute has been on the market for a while. The current hardware cost bubble is temporary, especially once people are forced to pay the real inference price instead of majorly subsidized subscriptions.
repeekad··on If you want to create a button from scratch, you must first create the universe
Correct me if I’m wrong, but my understanding is Google would love to make more web standards native (including selectors which have improved on chrome but are basically broken on safari) but Apple holds back progress in a (borderline?) anticompetitive way

Tesla has killed people, probably with autopilot but at least 15 deaths from people trying to escape vehicles but the electronic (non mechanical) door handles don’t work when there’s no power…

repeekad··on UPI: Anatomy of a Payment Transaction
Much of the world doesn’t like having a single entity own and control the process end to end, it’s more efficient but there’s only one point of trust. Multiple institutions that have to check each other means you don’t have to trust a single entity with everything.

CLAUDE.md, Anthropic is too exclusive and next level to use a standard idiomatic pattern like AGENTS.md

When Breath Becomes Air was a great book that seems relevant here
repeekad··on How's Linear so fast? A technical breakdown
Optimistic writes are cool and all, but I'd trade 150ms for search as you type any day.

> Everyone already hates that Google can arbitrarily ban people

Yet they’re still the predominate search engine, sadly the concerns of the few don’t interest monopolistic profit seekers without forced regulations, think how airlines are legally required to give refunds for delayed flights, there’s a reason it required legislation

repeekad··on I think Anthropic and OpenAI have found product-market fit
> clearly useful for people who took the time to understand it

people -> programmers, I haven’t met a non-developer who reports getting more time out of current AI platforms than they put in. If anything I’ve anecdotally heard the opposite, introducing AI at work creates so much slop (output) it takes more time to process it all without a tangible bump in overall productivity

repeekad··on Outsourcing plus local AI will soon become more economical vs. frontier labs
I think the article is right about outsourcing but not from cheap offshored contractors, good experts will become more independent and be more enabled to support more clients with AI, meaning small and medium businesses won’t need internal as many engineers, finance, marketing, etc
repeekad··on Uber’s COO says it’s getting harder to justify money spent on tokenmaxxing
Yes, but unlike the dot com bubble we’ll be left with half finished (or not even started) abandoned data center projects, instead of reasonably reusable fiber and ISP infra
repeekad··on Uber’s COO says it’s getting harder to justify money spent on tokenmaxxing
Those reasonably efficient models assume you use a harness that supports them well, the one size fits all harness of Claude desktop or codex does not support what you want well, and that’s intentional. It’s contradictory that these AI companies will continue to brrrr to the moon and return on AI spend requires discipline…
repeekad··on GitHub Actions down again today
It’s well integrated into massively underpriced agentic coding (and noncoding) workflows, I doubt there’s much more reason than that. The hip thing to do now is hold all your docs in github instead of notion so your agent can traverse them locally
repeekad··on Uber’s COO says it’s getting harder to justify money spent on tokenmaxxing
Every c suite in the country is panicking about being left behind, from their perspective it’s either token max or fade into obscurity, or at least that’s what they were sold
repeekad··on Microsoft reports AI is more expensive than paying human employees
But aren’t the revenue numbers that have investors foaming at the teeth based on that “tokens as a metric” world? It can’t be both an explosive growth business and also only ROI with more disciplined spend.
repeekad··on Google's Antigravity bait and switch
Apple may be behind, and even getting sued for false advertising around AI features, but at least they haven’t spent hundreds of billions of dollars with no indication of how they’ll make their money back.
repeekad··on Meta blocks human rights accounts from reaching audiences in Saudi Arabia, UAE
They are often in other countries, and there are much worse crimes to focus attention on with a limited budget. This does happen and should more often, but it’s far from a full solution.
repeekad··on Meta blocks human rights accounts from reaching audiences in Saudi Arabia, UAE
How do you ban psyops? Require every user register with a gov ID so there’s someone to go after? What’s a psyop vs a grassroots contrarian movement like LGBT used to be?

Anonymity online seems the ultimate double edge sword. I prefer privacy over government prescribed safety.
