ren_engineer··on Telegram founder Pavel Durov arrested at French airport
the EU is becoming a parody

>we've got to save democracy by restricting free speech and enforcing laws and regulations created by unelected officials

ren_engineer··on NASA announces Boeing Starliner crew will return on SpaceX Crew-9
>and Boeing was, until very recently, a prestigious aeronautical engineering company

what do you define as "recently"? This Boeing/lockheed project has been a taxpayer funded disaster for over a decade and this is just the obvious end result. Boeing managed to siphon billions of tax dollars in the meantime

ren_engineer··on Forbes 30 under 30 inductee charged with fraud in the same week (2020)
30 under 30 is going to inherently attract the wrong sort of people because the people actually worthy of it don't care about it. It basically acts as social proof, which the most successful people already have from their own work. Similar to Mensa in that the majority of the smartest people aren't going to feel the need to be validated by taking the time to join
ren_engineer··on Google loses antitrust suit over search deals on phones
I'm talking more about them posting new product launches, I/O livestream, gmail pinned to the top, etc. Embedded stuff in search results is fine for the most part, although their intent their is primarily to prevent click throughs to other sites and increase the chances of an ad click
ren_engineer··on Google loses antitrust suit over search deals on phones
I feel like the more blatant monopoly abuse by Google is how they use the Google search homepage to shill their other products. They effectively give themselves billions of dollars in free advertising
ren_engineer··on NASA likely to significantly delay the launch of Crew 9 due to Starliner issues
the fact NASA has been lying to the public for months makes it even worse. Going to be beautiful when they have to beg SpaceX to bail them out. Just shut Boeing down at this point, they are a failed organization
ren_engineer··on A primer on the current state of longevity research
from an evolutionary perspective the current human lifespan seems almost perfect

>long enough for grandparents to help with kids and pass on valuable knowledge

>short enough that new generations are able to adapt as needed to changing environments and throw out out of date information or cultural "technology" that is no longer relevant

increasing human lifespan significantly seems like a nightmare, especially if only the richest have access. The saying "science advances one death at a time" and just the thought of political leaders being able to entrench themselves over longer times spans is awful. Seems like it would most likely lead to complete stagnation

ren_engineer··on The Marshmallow Test does not reliably predict adult functioning
people really don't want to accept that beyond the most extreme cases(starvation, lead poisoning, complete neglect, no school access at all, etc.), environment really doesn't play that big of a role. Twin studies have shown this for literally decades
ren_engineer··on US Military admits to misinformation campaign about Sinovac Covid vaccine
main question is what other things they've created bot armies to pysop people that they haven't admitted to or that are currently ongoing? You don't just spin up this type of thing for a one off. And whether the US military is doing this against US citizens as well
ren_engineer··on Google search won't autocomplete searches related to Trump assasination attempt
even "trump as..." returns no suggested searches which is insane, obviously a manual action
ren_engineer··on Hydrothermal explosion at Yellowstone National Park
this, I feel like a lot of people are just so abstracted away from harsh reality in the modern world that many don't take things seriously. Massive normalcy bias and enhanced bystander effect. A lot of people's first instinct is to pull out their phone and record something as well
ren_engineer··on SpaceX will now move its HQ from Hawthorne, California, to Starbase, Texas
for SpaceX it's a bet that if Trump wins they will get far more lobbying power for contracts and Boeing/Lockheed will be even more screwed.

And while consumer opinion on Tesla and Starlink will be hurt, Elon is probably hoping to get Trump to tariff Chinese electric car competitors massively so his only competition will be domestic

ren_engineer··on Anonymous Source Shared Leaked Google Search API Documents
most of these have been outright publicly denied by Google employees, despite people showing with A/B tests that things like CTR and backlinks impacted rankings
ren_engineer··on SEC approves Ethereum ETFs, aligning ETH closer to commodity in industry win
how sidelined is HN that ETH getting an ETF doesn't get a single comment?
ren_engineer··on Sam and Greg's response to OpenAI Safety researcher claims
it's an attempt to keep the hype train going by implying they have internal models that make GPT-4 look bad. The question is if that's actually true, we'll find out soon because plenty of other companies are now approaching GPT-4 level performance and OpenAI will have to show their hand
ren_engineer··on Ilya Sutskever to leave OpenAI
seemed inevitable after that ouster attempt, probably just working out the details of the exit. But the day after their new features release announcement?
ren_engineer··on 23% of bachelor's degrees and 43% of master's degrees have a negative ROI
and I know a ton of people miserable and stressed because they are buried in college debt. The fact the government has created a system where 18 year old kids can rack up massive debts that can't be removed via bankruptcy is insane. Changing that would instantly fix the system, colleges would have to prove ROI or it would go back to how it used to be for non-practical degrees(only rich kids wasted their time and money on them)
ren_engineer··on Y Combinator's chief startup whisperer is demoting himself
the worst case scenario for being a YC founder is probably a 500K+ job at FAANG or another YC startup if you fail
ren_engineer··on United Airlines Boeing 737 Loses Panel Mid-Flight
This is SFO again, seems more like a maintenance issue for the last few incidents
ren_engineer··on Airbnb's Devastating Effect on Canadian Housing
>The problem is not the demand for housing, it’s the supply

how do you build enough housing when the government of a country with a population of 30 million is bringing in 500K immigrants every year?

ren_engineer··on Jeff Dean: Trends in Machine Learning [video]
I've A/B tested this with webinars and the tools I've tried tend to miss some really valuable/interesting stuff even when I give it the full transcript. Same goes for when I try to use ChatGPT or other tools for full interactive analysis, even when I basically hand it what I'm looking for as if I hadn't watched the video it will leave out the critical information
ren_engineer··on Sora: Creating video from text
actually the opposite imo, this stuff is the ultimate bread and circus to distract poor people from worsening living conditions. Much cheaper to provide VR goggles with AI model access than housing and healthcare
ren_engineer··on Sora: Creating video from text
seems like a significant chunk of the population may opt in to the Matrix voluntarily.

on another note I find it funny they released this right after Google announced their new model. Bad luck for Google or did OpenAI just decide to move up their announcement date to steal their thunder?

ren_engineer··on Sora: Creating video from text
I'm not sure there would be much demand for purely custom/individualized episodes beyond the novelty and maybe for fun with a group of friends. Most of the reason people watch TV or movies is for the shared experience that you can discuss with others. It could definitely drive down production costs though, hopefully HBO uses it to eventually redo Game of Thrones post season 4
ren_engineer··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5
RAG would still be useful for cost savings assuming they charge per token, plus I'm guessing using the full-context length would be slower than using RAG to get what you need for a smaller prompt
ren_engineer··on Grade inflation at UC Riverside, and institutional pressures for easier grading
universities have gone from having the goal of actually educating to giving credentials in return for a lot of money
ren_engineer··on Bob Moore, who founded Bob's Red Mill, has died
In the US socialism/communism got tied to the state atheism of the Soviets and China which is why there is the political divide
ren_engineer··on 'Baby Bust': Why Fewer Young People Expect to Become Parents (2013)
just increase the tax credit for kids, even make it progressive so you get bigger tax credits for more kids so higher income families have more reason to have more kids. The welfare cliff as it currently stands will doom our country, in my friends and family group the ones who are unemployed or work low income jobs have more kids than the rest combined and no reason to strive to do better because unless they make 6 figures they are better off doing the minimum.

systems are about incentives and our current system in the US has us in a death spiral, immigration is used as a short-term stopgap to reduce impact of low birth rates but just accelerates the death spiral in the long term

ren_engineer··on New Bill Would Require Phonics-Based Reading Instruction in California
what's old is new, even NYC where the war against phonics was started has given up on it. I guess having Mississippi and Alabama score better than them was the final straw

https://thehill.com/homenews/education/3996281-nyc-stressing...

basically 30+ years wasted on a strategy with no scientific basis, I wonder what our school systems are teaching today that will be looked at as being just as dumb 30 years from now

ren_engineer··on Cloud Egress Costs
Snowflake and most other cloud services offer on-prem for these use cases, so it really doesn't make sense for them to roll their own data centers because it would be pretty niche. Cloud works for startups because they are there already, on-prem for enterprise customers with their own hardware
