rememberlenny··on Ask HN: Do I still need a dot com domain?
One thing to note is that not all TLD will perform the same in email filters.

Especially when it comes to companies with strict email privileges, any TLD that used to be free (ie. .ml) may be filtered out and require a .com mirror. I worked at a startup that realized their emails were being flagged for spam because of the TOD, and it took a while to understand the issue was due to the TLD itself.

rememberlenny··on America's Seed Fund: Up to $1.5M for Zero Equity
For what it's worth, I worked on improving this while at 18F.

A big problem with this program was that the funds distributed were disproportionately allocated to coastal cities. As a result, places like silicon valley, north east (Boston) and NY. The goal of the project revision was to help make sure more money was going to less recognized universities and research entities.

This is definitely worth pursuing if there are areas of research that you or your company are exploring that have potential to go to market with a infusion of capital.

The drawbacks, like any type of investment, are mainly the distribution cycles of the funds. Unlike private equity, you may need to wait longer than a quick VC seedfund to get money. If you are already burning capital, then this is likely not the ideal investment for you.

rememberlenny··on Ask HN: Which great products didn't succeed?
Google Glass is actively produced and successful in the enterprise space. The consumer market wasn't the ideal demographic, but it pivoted and continued development.
rememberlenny··on Chinese Devs Using GitHub to Protest 996 Workweek (9am – 9pm, 6 days/week)
Good to know. My experience there was approximately 8 years ago. Im curious how much base salary has increased.
rememberlenny··on Chinese Devs Using GitHub to Protest 996 Workweek (9am – 9pm, 6 days/week)
This kind of expression helps humanize the otherwise distance created between the Chinese development world and the otherwise Western portrayal.

A few thoughts from my experience living in China. When living in China, I didn't see any appeal in the overworking culture.

Most developers with families worked normal hours. People who were single made time to spend time with friends. I didn't see the overwork ethic it in a positive light at all. Keeping in mind normal developers salaries in tier 1 cities for China is sub-1k USD a month. In tier 2 cities, I can only imagine it gets exponentially lower and so forth for smaller cities.

rememberlenny··on Why I turned down my Y Combinator interview
> I just don't think I would get excited working for someone I know with that short term of a mentality.

This.

I was recently the first full-time hire at a seed funded company that was in the right place and the right time. They grew to 10 people over a few months, and I loved the people I was working with.

Knowing that the founders had a 10-40x equity stake larger than mine made it nearly impossible to feel invested in the company.

rememberlenny··on Why I believe Rails is still relevant in 2019
Just to share for anyone interested in the Rails gems I'm using.

An asynchronous worker manager is helpful for handling cron jobs, mail tasks, and various batch processes that can be loaded into memory (mostly Redis) but processed later.

I use the gem Sidekiq which, as is, provides a UI and API that I rely heavily on. I might just not know the best practices, but I definitely find this valuable.

The BI tools are not something found in most ecosystems. Not to mention dead simple setup. I use two gems, Ahoy and Blazer, which together provide a simple API for event tracking and saving database queries.

rememberlenny··on Why I believe Rails is still relevant in 2019
As an individual developer, I don’t know a platform and framework that lets me do more with my time. I used rails recently for a new project to act both as the backend for an iOS app, an auth management system, a asynchronous worker manager, an upload manaager, and BI tool.

Combined with the mature gem ecosystem and clear mechanics for putting everything together, I was up and running immediately, and was able to continue adding features and refining without issues.

rememberlenny··on Checklist for Debugging Neural Networks
Reminds me of the Checklist Manifesto.

For complicated processes with a degree of failure, having a clear task list can help reduce errors.

Very solid list of concrete tasks for debugging a neural network. The emphasis on tracking is very underrated and much easier now than ever before.

Hey all! This is a passion project of mine.

I crawl street art images from online resources and log the ones that have lat/lon points. I have a series of web apps that work together to make this app possible.

rememberlenny··on Launch HN: The Juggernaut (YC W19) – A Publication for the South Asian Diaspora
Huge props to the founder and crazy story to share about Snigdha. For what its worth, I'm coming across this post randomly and happy to see it in HN.

The internet is very small.

I sat next to Snigdha on a plane once, coming back from a conference in 2013. At the time, she was working at one of the big four consulting firms and was sharing her passion for the Indian cultural market and it's untapped potential around the world. It's crazy to see her company five years later on the front page of HN.

I subscribed to the Inkmango newsletter a while ago and have been pleasantly surprised by the quality and richness as a non-South Asian reader.

The best way to describe this content is "the New Yorker for the South Asian Diaspora". It's been very educational to be aware of worlds soon-to-be 1.5 billion finds valuable.

rememberlenny··on An Exploration of Variable Fonts (2018)
When considering that 80% or even more usage is likely a small set of fonts, you can imagine how the migration of a few fonts can be seen to make a huge impact to the web.
rememberlenny··on An Exploration of Variable Fonts (2018)
I don’t think it’s fair to attribute your reasoning here.

The use of web fonts has never been greater. With more websites using non-system fonts, Variable Fonts serves to reduce page weight while providing a technical and design solution.

If a website uses more than two weights from a given font, then a Variable font would save bytes downloaded. The desire to optimize websites is not going away soon, so this will continue to be valuable.

The unnecessary design restrictions around “number of font weights” that many web developers are used to would be blown away by well designed Variable Fonts. Too often web developers are tasked with limiting a designer from using more than two fonts or choosing between a limited number of font weights.

A single font file can replace multiple fonts by utilizing the expanded design space.

Additionally, when considering non-Latin fonts, there a huge implications of using custom fonts. Font weight improvements there are in the megabytes.

Beyond the utility of font size, Variable Fonts present the concept of controlling text within a multi-dimensional design-space, rather than a pre-designated font instance. This caters new opportunities to improve readability on various display sizes.

With the growing number of contexts where people consume text (small and big screens/AR/VR/IOT) the added control provides new creative opportunity and routes for accessibility.

rememberlenny··on On Building an Instagram Street Art Dataset and Detection Model
You are one step ahead of me.

I want to try and map out street art in cities by using the landmark points in the background of images. Theres a few neat datasets that do landmark -> geodata translation, but as expected, its limited.

That being said, I can imagine in a very near future, it will be possible to train against google maps and get enough "landmarks" to geolocalize images.

rememberlenny··on On Building an Instagram Street Art Dataset and Detection Model
This is a great question that I definitely don't know the answer to yet.

There is a trope around graffiti artists that their biggest fans are the police. Often an artist will spend all night painting a mural, and then by the morning its already gone, but the paint "buffers" submit a photo to the police.

I definitely think there will be a cat-and-mouse synonymous with the adversarial neural networks examples for hiding weapons in everyday objects.

At the end of the day, most street art is commissioned or done in pre-approved areas, so I don't think it will be a cause of concern with larger artists.

rememberlenny··on Tell HN: I Hugely Regret Using Stripe Atlas
I can't disagree more with the OP. I went through Stripe Atlas with an existing problem and didn't have any issues.

I found the customer support incredible helpful. Whenever I had questions, I would always get a response within 24 hours. Even more so, I had times when I would get follow ups to on-going issues, making me feel like their customer support process was really solid.

I originally signed up as a C-Corp, but realized I wanted to change to an LLC before the process was completed. The support staff helped me and got me on the way very quickly.

I didn't have any issues with my banking partner. I was actually able to get my Azlo account started even before my incorporation documents for an EIN number were completed, which was very helpful.

I'm not saying all of this other than because I strongly feel Atlas is a very good product. Similar to OP, I have incorporated before, and personally it was a total mess. The first time, I registered a Delaware C-Corp through another legal service I wont name, and found myself paying various costs to a Registered Agent, which was misleadingly introduced. Atlas does a much better job explaining the financial requirements around taxes, which I also didn't have properly explained the first time.

Overall, I would strongly recommend Atlas - especially if you can get a discount through some startup program.

PDF document posted here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18608710
rememberlenny··on U.K. Lawmakers Document Summarizing Facebook’s Seized Internal Facebook Emails [pdf]
Summary

1. White Lists

Facebook have clearly entered into whitelisting agreements with certain companies, which meant that after the platform changes in 2014/15 they maintained full access to friends data. It is not clear that there was any user consent for this, nor how Facebook decided which companies should be whitelisted or not.

2. Value of friends data

It is clear that increasing revenues from major app developers was one of the key drivers behind the Platform 3.0 changes at Facebook. The idea of linking access to friends data to the financial value of the developers relationship with Facebook is a recurring feature of the documents.

3. Reciprocity

Data reciprocity between Facebook and app developers was a central feature in the discussions about the launch of Platform 3.0.

4. Android

Facebook knew that the changes to its policies on the Android mobile phone system, which enabled the Facebook app to collect a record of calls and texts sent by the user would be controversial. To mitigate any bad PR, Facebook planned to make it as hard of possible for users to know that this was one of the underlying features of the upgrade of their app.

5. Onavo

Facebook used Onavo to conduct global surveys of the usage of mobile apps by customers, and apparently without their knowledge. They used this data to assess not just how many people had downloaded apps, but how often they used them. This knowledge helped them to decide which companies to acquire, and which to treat as a threat.

6. Targeting competitor Apps

The files show evidence of Facebook taking aggressive positions against apps, with the consequence that denying them access to data led to the failure of that business.
