rememberlenny··on An Introduction to Variable Fonts (2019)
FWIW - I worked on Google Fonts for the last 18 months. Happy to answer any questions.

In short: rather than having a single font file for every weight, variable fonts take in a variable (ie. weight, width, optical size, etc) and can render the fonts glyph at a specific design space. This means instead of having three files for thin, normal and bold, you can have one slightly large file that can render thin, bold, and everything better.

rememberlenny··on Should I apply to Pioneer app?
You should. Don't over think it. By participating, you get the following:

1. A good feedback mechanism on what you are working on.

2. Social pressure to increase motivation.

3. Time box yourself to accelerate production.

You get these things just by participating. If you win the game and reach a funding opportunity, you can ask yourself the next question. For now, just being able to produce and benefit from those three things are invaluable.

And it's free.

rememberlenny··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2020)
Huge props to Pioneer. I am constantly impressed by their innovative ways of engaging creators who build tools that people love.
rememberlenny··on De-risking custom technology projects: 18F technology budgeting guide
I just came to say, I love 18F. I worked there from 2016-2018 and it's an incredible organization. If you are looking for a place to contribute to the federal government and make a difference with your technical skills, take a serious look at doing a tour of service.

rememberlenny··on Google Fonts Analytics
I currently work on it as well, so happy to pitch in.
rememberlenny··on Google Fonts Analytics
It does not, and they don't sell the data or use it for any tracking.
rememberlenny··on Ask HN: How do I find investors?
Play www.pioneer.app, show progress, and you should be in good company in two weeks.

Is there one of these for recruiters?
rememberlenny··on Tsunebaro Makaguchi – Education Through Interest
I went to Soka University of America (https://www.soka.edu/), which was founded based on Makiguchi's principles of value creation. It's a liberal arts private college that was founded on the Buddhist principles of respecting the dignity of life.

Very cool to see this posted here.

I'd love to know who you are! Contact me: rememberlenny at gmail!

rememberlenny··on Show HN: Senior meets junior – Connecting engineers over side projects
Yes! This is a great point. Right now, I'm talking with each person before moving forward with them, so I gather it later. I'm actually leaning toward connecting people who living in drastically different economic climates. Ie. global south-north.
rememberlenny··on Show HN: Senior meets junior – Connecting engineers over side projects
Im not sure this is the exact solution in your case. It sounds more like you are looking for labor, rather than a contributor.

I don't have answers around ownership/legal. In short, the idea should be that the project's owner is also the sole legal owner. If you write code for someone else's project, you don't sudden get a stake in the project.

Definitely something to work through.

rememberlenny··on Show HN: Senior meets junior – Connecting engineers over side projects
I've noticed that people with really interesting side projects don't always have the bandwidth to execute at the pace they want.

At the same time, I find a lot of junior developers looking for opportunities to expand their craft. It's easiest to learn when you have something real to work on. But without opportunities that provide real world project experience, it's hard to get real world experience.

I thought it would be nice for junior developers to get opportunities to put their name on a project, while also seeing how something gets launched with real users works.

rememberlenny··on Show HN: Senior meets junior – Connecting engineers over side projects
Not at all. I think sharing code/collaborating on projects will have its issues that I haven't figured out yet. Of course people dont want their IP stollen, but also you might be able to make some kind legal bond. I definitely don't think this is open source only.

I had a talk with the first user and he seemed to understand this as a bridge to start working on Node.js. What he wanted was any concrete opportunity to work on anything, and didnt care about being paid. He signed up as a junior dev, but really is a senior contract engineer.

rememberlenny··on Restricting Manhattan’s 14th street to buses has been a success
This is one of the more exciting things that has happened to traffic in NYC. Getting rid of cars in a city isn't possible, but being able to make this change to one street at a time seems feasible.

I live a block away from this area, and it's completely transformed the neighborhood. It's much safer to walk across 14th st. There are many shops in the area that seem to be getting more foot traffic (no data behind this). There are more people congregating around the bench/sitting areas around 14th street.

rememberlenny··on Streamlit launches open-source machine learning application dev framework
I tried using this today and it's really slick. The API and the ease of implementation on OSx and Ubuntu were surprising.
rememberlenny··on Tilde.club is giving accounts to waitlist
When I got an account for tilde.club, I used it to host the first website I ever made. Now you can see the oldest Dreamweaver based html page I made from when I was 15: https://tilde.club/~rememberlenny/
rememberlenny··on Andreessen Horowitz Returns Slip, According to Internal Data
Key points:

The funds the firm raised in 2010 and 2011 showed a net internal rate of return of 16% and 12%.

The results are a significant drop from the 44% return rate of its 2009 fund.

rememberlenny··on What Is a Tech Company?
"In that respect, all successful companies, at least in a free market, are tech companies: they do something more efficiently than anyone else, on whatever product vector matters to their customers."

The simplification that doesn't do justice to the article is: Tech companies are those that are more efficient than their competitors.

rememberlenny··on Leon Sans, a geometric typeface made with code
Variable fonts are amazing. The font distributor Im working with is making a huge push to provide a large library of variable web fonts by the end of this year.
rememberlenny··on Show HN: Privacy-Focused Alternative to Google Docs and Microsoft Word
I would like to see a preview before signing up. Is that possible based on the current app structure?

Being someone who is working on building a text editor myself, I know how many small details make or break the user experience. While the privacy focus is nice, I won't sacrifice the user experience.

Proving that the app state is up to par would be an instant factor to make me switch.

rememberlenny··on On Writing a C++ Book
As a dabbler in hardware and edge deployed machine learning models, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for.
rememberlenny··on Pioneer manipulates scores to pick winners
Disclaimer: I was a winner in the August ‘18 batch.

Pioneer has been changing the meetings rules and game each month, but since the beginning, the advisors have always had a influential role in determining the winners. The month I Was in the winning batch, I was never in the top 10 rank, but was pushed over the edge in the final evaluation period.

My understanding is that the winners are decided by a combined factor of perceived progress, points, and weighted evaluations by past winners and advisors.

The reason for this is that not all projects can be compared equally. Someone with a funded start up who has a team of 5 should be equally compared to a single founder starting a project in a developing country.

Overall, from the winners I have seen, there do seem to be emphasis on projects that are socially oriented or geographically diverse. One goal that has been expressed multiple times by the Pioneer founders is to create a global campus. Rather than allowing campus driven knowledge and social interactions to be limited to people who have access to coastal cities or urban mega cities, Pioneer provides an opportunity for access to the same social lift, but without the limitations of location.

EDIT: Changed "Ivy League" campus to global campus.

rememberlenny··on Microsoft’s Azure Kinect AI Camera
From what I understand, this is nice if you are trying to use multiple devices together. The Kinect's API makes that very easy with Azure (read: multiple cameras scanning a single location in real time, via a robot).

If you just need the same sensors for depth, but significantly cheaper, then look at occipital.

rememberlenny··on Microsoft’s Azure Kinect AI Camera
This would definitely be overkill. You could do that with 5$ cameras and some ML.
rememberlenny··on Building an LTE Access Point with OpenWRT Rooter
This device is great. I use it for nearly the exact purpose the OP describes. The GL iNET also lets you tether from a mobile device and stream the connection to devices connected to the router.
