rembicilious··on Self-Supervised Video Object Segmentation by Motion Grouping
Wow! The title is perfectly succinct. I have never heard of this concept before and upon reading the title realized that many powerful techniques will be based upon it. Perhaps several already are. It seems such an “obvious” solution, but I can’t say that it would have ever occurred to me. I don’t work in ML, but fascinating little gems like this are what keeps me coming back to HN

rembicilious··on Nation's Programmers Admit They're Just Good at Googling Things
Pretty cute satire, reminiscent of The Onion.

It’s funny because it’s mostly true. I think the other code monkey attribute that makes a “programmer” is the sick addiction/ability to track down a bug for hours or possibly days on end.

This plus Googling amounts to the lions share of my coding “prowess”.

rembicilious··on Functional programming in C++ (2012)
That is what I gather as well. Really the parent wishes not to be interfacing with a database, and I suppose in dreamland the database could be integrated to the programmers IDE.
rembicilious··on Chat roulette is on the rise again, this time with AI
Chatroulette seems to be using a similar method of seperation.

From the article:

It created a filtered channel, now known as Random Chat, designed to exclude nudity, alongside an Unmoderated channel.

Strangely, they intend to discontinue the unfiltered section in the near future.

The unfiltered channel remains popular, but usage is shrinking, and Ternovskiy plans to eliminate it by the middle of 2021.

My gut feeling is that will just lead to mature content creators attempting to trick the filter, and I imagine they will be successful.

rembicilious··on What Shape Are You?
Interesting ideas. I wonder how much of this translates to product development. From the perspective of the person assembling the product the work is all additive. Fitting the product to meet customer requirements is more of a subtractive effort. Like popping items off a list.
rembicilious··on Octopuses Like to Punch Fish
If these videos are real-time and not slowed down, I think the word “punch” is a little hyperbolic. It’s more like a push or a nudge. Saying that “octopuses punch fish” makes it sound violent, but it doesn’t look like the octopus intends to harm the fish at all.
rembicilious··on The Rise and Fall of Ambrosia Software (2019)
To this day Basilisk mac emulator is one of the first things I install on a new PC build just so I can play EV! 26 years or so and I still love that series Thanks so much!

rembicilious··on Woman allegedly impersonated prosecutor, dropped charges against herself
Maybe it’s not a big deal, unless you value honesty above all else. I am not always honest, especially when it’s obvious to me that the other party will only use my goodwill to their advantage. In the case of the parent, I can imagine many scenarios where it is difficult or untimely to get supervisor approval, but failure or delay in doing so results in the employee catching all the heat for it.
rembicilious··on Show HN: Parametric Equalizer for PulseAudio
Being Jack aware would be a bonus but there are already a multitude of Jack aware EQ plugins. The feature-set of this prettyeq plugin seems aimed specifically at system-wide audio, in other words to adjust the audio on your system to match your daily use preferences, rather than production work. I might never use this sort of EQ (high-pass, lo-pass, 5 peaks) for production work. Maybe for tweaking a final mix... pulseaudio is definitely in need of some nicely integrated audio filters. Jack has many to choose from, but more are always welcome.

Edit: I am not an audio pro and if this EQ is in fact aimed at production, I would love to learn more about its use cases

rembicilious··on Guietta – Python module to create simple GUIs
Great idea! Tkinter always looks a little dated and PyQT is more than my brain wants to deal with when I need a simple GUI.
