reinier··on Implications of AI to schools
to me this sounds like it means cheaper education. smaller classes could also be achieved more easily.

when we've just made personalized education viable for everybody. schools already have the computers, laptops, tablets and study spaces. only thing left is to put these AI education apps on them. classes could also just remain the same size. students will get personalized education through the app. students can still interact with the teacher when necessary or for class wide sessions with the teacher.

i have a possible addition to the problem. people are spending lots of time indoors, so my theory is;

people are missing a lot of the natural sun radiation, causing the fluid in your eye to be less translucencent generally and possibly building up floaters more easily.

this could disperse light more inside your eye. enlarging the effect of blinding lights at night.

Also, it is finally a replacement for all the IOUs in the financial system. The financial system is currently IOUs all the way down. Caitlin Long talks about this on a recent Real Vision interview.

"The market structure is fundamentally built on layers of intermediaries and settlement of both securities and payments happen on a delayed net settlement basis. By contrast in crypto, the markets are decentralized, no layers of intermediaries, settlement happens on a real time gross settlement basis..."

reinier··on The End of the Roman Empire Wasn’t That Bad
No, we need each EU country to realize that they all need to have a functioning army that all train together and all contribute to a force that can possibly defend the EU together. Maybe we could standardize a lot of equipment across the armies, but why would we want a general EU army? Who would be in control of it? The possibility of an unelected comission ending up with control is unacceptable IMHO.

reinier··on Ask HN: Software developers, What happened when you were fired/laid off?
I would like to know this as well, since I just turned 31...
reinier··on Tell: Got 50% bump for faking a counter offer
The company was capable/willing to pay 50% more, but in first instance did not. Negotiation tactics, unfairness and manipulation, lies. It's what you should come to expect from companies, especially large ones. On the company side of the table is someone in charge of making sure the company spends as little money as possible on him. I think he did a great job getting the most out of it. He deserves it, for thinking it through. Most people aren't that great at serving their own interest and getting what they deserve in negotiations like that.

Reminds me of Manula http://www.manula.com/ which makes something that looks like this. And has been around for 2 years (since 2012). There aren't many solutions that tackle this problem, so keep up the great work!
reinier··on The Mystery of Lofty Stock Market Elevations
And with central banks holding so much equities, who will bail out the central banks if the stock market crashes?

We’re getting closer to an international sovereign debt central bank crisis now that we’ve created all this sovereign debt and printed all this money. We’re getting closer to an international sovereign debt central bank crisis where we actually lose confidence in the central banks. Who’s going to bail them out? The answer is the IMF. The IMF will print SDRs and hand them out. Countries will swap them among themselves and re-liquefy the world. It’ll be highly inflationary.

And after people lose confidence in the IMF? Who bails them out? The only thing standing behind the IMF, is gold. Although the IMF is the third largest holder of gold in the world, with close to 3000 tons. After US and Germany.

People did. Trading halted. People were stuck paying interest on their shorts every day... Keep away from anything penny stock.
