regnerba··on Homelab: Intel NUC with the ESXi Hypervisor
With regards to NFS permissions, I set my Synology up as so:

* Client: 192.168.0.8/29 (whatever the smallest subnet is I can use that includes my NUC)

* Privilege: Read/Write

* Squash: No mapping

* Asynchronous: Yes

* Non-privileged port: Denied

* Cross-mount: Denied

This is fairly out of date (I keep my own stuff in a private monorepo, this was a snapshot I posted for a friend), but here is the basics of a script to setup my NUC: https://github.com/regner/homelab-stacks/blob/master/scripts...

Of note, the "Adding NFS share to fstab" part doesn't actually do that...

regnerba··on Homelab: Intel NUC with the ESXi Hypervisor
Why run ESXi at all and not just install CentOS directly on the NUC?
regnerba··on Homelab: Intel NUC with the ESXi Hypervisor
O_o what the heck are you trying to run in a home lab where that isn't enough? I currently run 20+ containers per NUC in my home lab. I have plenty of capacity left and nothing else to really run...
regnerba··on Homelab: Intel NUC with the ESXi Hypervisor
I run my homelab on NUCs as well but no hypervisor. Everything I run is in Docker containers. So the NUCs have CentOS installed and then just containers across the Swarm cluster.

Storage is an NFS mount from my Synology NAS.

The only reason I would really care to have a hypervisor is because then I can do more from Terraform.

I use Terraform to configure my DNS, my Ubiquiti gear, and the Swarm cluster but that leaves a gap where I need to do something to manage the actual CentOS machine. There isn't much to manage (users, SSHd config, SSH keys, packages such as vim, docker, and htop, and then NFS mounts) but the less I have to manage myself the better. Just don't think it's worth adding a whole hypervisor just to pull possibly some of the networking into Terraform.

Anyways, NUCs + Docker Swarm = great win.

regnerba··on Google bans Zoom from employees' computers
Not the person you asked, but I personally really dislike Jitsi for the following reasons:

* We run into so many issues screen sharing, usually it's just that the persons screen doesn't show up, but it's also often way to compressed to read

* Even just 1 on 1 it makes my laptop cry, with 5 or 6 people in a conference I have to minimize the application or I cannot use my laptop at all because of the CPU load, and at 12+ people even with the application minimized it was maxing out my 2017 Macbook Pro CPU

* For comparison, I recently was in a 230 person Zoom conference, laptop hardly noticed

* I often have audio issues and it requires restarting the application or chrome before it fixes itself

* Really the performance of it is the biggest reason I hate it, we tried having a "lounge" where people join it and just chill while working, but we stopped because once a few of us got on it our computers just became unusable

regnerba··on Facebook is giving $1k to every employee
Thanks for the response. That sure helps it make more sense. That extra bit to help make sure people like nannies are still employed but not working.
regnerba··on Facebook is giving $1k to every employee
But why? Aren't most of their employees going to still be making their salary anyways? What do they need the extra money for?

The people in the economy that really need the money are not the people working at Facebook.

I mean, congrats to Facebook employees, I just don't understand why.

This was my first thought as well.

Link doesn't work for me.
regnerba··on Getting Started with Apache Avro
If the author is around:

> Translates to less money saved on provisioning hardware.

I read that as it will cost more. Saving less money is bad.

I assume that is a typo?

regnerba··on Lessons learned from writing ShellCheck
> discovering late in the interview process that Apple has a blanket ban on all programming related hobby projects

O_o There must be more to it then that. What the hell does anyone do in their spare time at home for fun then?

regnerba··on Jellyfin: A Free Software Media System
One of the things I found I really like is that Jellyfin is really good at what it does. It doesn't do nearly as much as PLEX, but I am OK with that as I just want it to catalog my movies and TV shows, show some pretty artwork, and crucially play them.

I don't use trakt.tv myself so never looked to see if it has any integration with that.

regnerba··on Jellyfin: A Free Software Media System
I run both PLEX and Jellyfin in Docker containers on my homelab and I have found Jellyfin to "just work" better. The hardware acceleration from my Intel NUC just works for Jellyfin and was always a struggle in PLEX.
regnerba··on Jellyfin: A Free Software Media System
I run Jellyfin in my home lab and just Chromecast it to my TV.
regnerba··on Jellyfin: A Free Software Media System
Switched to Jellyfin a few weeks ago from PLEX and it has been rock solid so far. I especially love how much better managing users is. Having more control over who can download, stream, and transcode when doing either of those things is A+.
regnerba··on Show HN: Blackpage – A Social Network for the Command Line
If this is "by geeks for geeks" and distributed on GitHub, where is the source?

The GitHub page links to a Kickstarter which says "Become a contributor for Command Quarterly" which links to http://commandquarterly.com/ which is currently down/dead/non-existent?

Also, why does a social network need a crypto currency?

regnerba··on Biometric YubiKey
You cannot revoke your fingerprint, but your fingerprint is just unlocking a private key. You can revoke that private key. So if you lose the YubiKey you can still revoke that YubiKey.

Do I understand that correct?

regnerba··on Elon Musk tweets using SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet
Elon has a lot of money in Tesla. Tesla currently makes, and is moving to make a lot more, money in China. If they want to continue that in China then when China asks them to turn off their Earth facing equipment on the satalites over China they are going to. Unless Elon wants to get into censorship himself, which I don't think he does. They can leave their laser links running between the satalites.

Yes, just not for this role at this time unfortunately.
regnerba··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2019)
Voxter Communications | Ops/DevOps | Vancouver, BC, Canada | Full-Time Onsite

Voxter Communications is looking to hire Op/DevOps people. We are in the process of moving our bare metal infrastructure to GCP. If you have experience in both bare metal and cloud that's awesome but not required.

We are a small company with 8 engineers and just me as dedicated Ops. Our cloud infrastructure is managed with Terraform, configuration management for both cloud and bare metal is done with Puppet. Our goal is to finish the bare metal migration to GCP and then continue down the path of containerization into Kubernetes. We are also looking at moving our CI system from bare metal (Buildkite) to CircleCI.

Our job posting lists a number of the technologies we work with but we by no means expect anyone to come in knowing them all. We hire primarily culture first and we don't expect anyone to be all knowing.

Thank you for sharing that. Was a really good watch.
regnerba··on Google collects face data now – what it means and how to opt out
I wanted to show a friend a picture of our cat sitting on top of our TV (which is hanging on the wall). I spent a few minutes scrolling through my photos unable to find it. Ended up searching for "TV cat" and it came up right away. Wish I had started with that.

I just don't trust myself enough to not fuck up and lose all my photos if I self hosted something that was equal. I run a small home lab and I never store anything on it I cannot afford to lose.

regnerba··on Candidates for Mozilla's IRC Successor
For a lot of people IRC is "broken" when compared to modern alternatives.

I personally really dislike using IRC. I am in several IRC channels because some open source projects I use and upstream code to are on IRC. I dislike it very much.

regnerba··on Kuma – Open-source control plane for your Service Mesh
That's awesome to see they are working on it. I haven't been able to find anything for Swarm.
regnerba··on Kuma – Open-source control plane for your Service Mesh
Was hoping to see Docker Swarm integration but it doesn't seem to have any. Looks like it could be done with a bunch of manual work, just not supported out of the box.

regnerba··on Keybase and Stellar Partner on XLM Airdrop Worth $118M
I had to fully quit the app and launch it again before the "airdrop" button appeared. Still unsure myself about the first airdrop. I used my account regularly, was able to join the airdrop so meet all the criteria, but havne't had any Lumens added to my wallet.
