reenorap··on Backblaze drive stats for Q2 2026
Where? Every one that I've seen is double from last year's price.
reenorap··on Backblaze drive stats for Q2 2026
Hard drives.... I remember those things... didn't I used to use them before the Great HDD and SSD Extinction of 2025-2026?

Seriously, I had to replace 2 hard drives in my NAS this year like a bad luck lottery and my hard drives have doubled in price. I was terrified that my NVMe was failing as well.

reenorap··on MongoDB CEO resigns to join Meta
He is likely being promised a chance at succession to CEO.
reenorap··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
Don't forget how Harris wasn't even nominated.

And all the shenanigans around 2016 when Bernie Sanders was shut out by the DNC. Even Elizabeth Warren said outright that the DNC rigged the 2016 nomination. I think the outcome would have been very, very different if the DNC didn't fuck with the timeline and forced Hillary as the Dem nominee.

reenorap··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
Democrats are the same side of the coin as the Republicans.

We, the people, are on the other side.

reenorap··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
> Indeed. Toyota's days are numbered.

Uhhhh excuse me? I just bought a new Toyota Camry Hybrid because its range is 650 miles on a single gas tank. I can drive from Bay Area to LA, drive around LA for 5 days and then drive back home on 1.5 tanks of gas. I love it, and I don't have to spend hours charging. My other car is a Tesla, which I also love but I will never use it for road trips. My friend drove from Chicago to SF and had to charge 15+ times.

reenorap··on Pentium II at 600Mhz with Voodoo 3 Emulated on 86Box with M6 Mac Mini
Me too. I lost all my money at the time betting on TDFX. I was salty as fuck against Nvidia for decades until I had no choice but to buy their GPU 10-ish years ago. Now I’m a stockholder. I only wish I chose properly 25 years ago…
reenorap··on LinkedIn wins court order blocking mass scraping of user data
They should fix impersonation of employees and more importantly recruiters. I've had so much fake recruiters contact me, I can't tell who is real and who is fake anymore.

It's an easy fix, just have the recruiters verify with an email every month, but they don't so it makes me think they either encourage it or they really don't care because they benefit somehow.

reenorap··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
This is false. Nuclear power plants are very profitable, if streamline the regulations that are choking them to death with bureaucracy and no safety.
reenorap··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
They are not profitable. They add taxes to gas so that it pays for it.
reenorap··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
WTF? People aren't allowed to ask genuine questions anymore before being labeled politically? You are absolutely fucked by politics, not everything is left or right.
reenorap··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
Are there risks of any poisons or chemicals from the solar panels leaking into the water system over time?
reenorap··on GPT-6 Sol and Luna
Why do they bother creating effort to market all these different models.

All I want to know is how old is the model and how much does it cost. I can figure out which one I want to use based on that, assuming that newer models are always better.

Trying to convince us there is a difference between GPT-6-Sol and GPT-5.6-Terra or whatnot is ludicrous to the point of being insulting, especially when new models come out every week.

reenorap··on Engineering Memory: On learning to memorize first 100 digits of pi (2024)
There’s a song on YouTube that my kid and a bunch of his classmates used to memorize the first 100 digits of pi. When they were 6 the entire class memorized the periodic table similarly using a YouTube song as well.

Funny thing is that another kid memorized pi to over 500 digits just from pure memorization.

reenorap··on What Sun got wrong
I worked on enterprise software around the turn of the century. There was no database/os combo more bullet proof than Oracle on Solaris. Solaris was a great OS but the speed and ferocity that Linux killed Sun was something I will never forget.

I went to the Menlo Park offices to see a demo of their 64-cpu (I think) system at the time but it didn’t take long for Linux on intel killed the entire market.

reenorap··on US Treasuries Have Become Unappetizing for Foreign Central Banks and Governments
Exactly. Same as when Bessent wanted to buy 6B in long bonds but only bought 5.XB, people said that it failed but anyone who understands knows that it's the opposite. The oversubscription rate is normally 3X or more but this time it was 2X which means that people would rather keep their long bonds, which shows confidence in them.
reenorap··on US Treasuries Have Become Unappetizing for Foreign Central Banks and Governments
Every graph of foreign ownership is up and to the left over the last 10 years

Only China has gone down:

https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/foreign-treasury-...

I stand corrected about Japan it looks like they've been flat over the last 10+ YEARS

https://tradingeconomics.com/united-states/foreign-treasury-...

Basically the article linked above is dumb, and they either are stupid and don't understand what they're talking about or trying to cast a false narrative

reenorap··on US Treasuries Have Become Unappetizing for Foreign Central Banks and Governments
Yes, that's called Quantitative Easing after the Global Financial Crisis. The peak in the graph was 2008 after which the US issues a shit ton of debt which was bought by the Fed. China used to be the biggest holder of US Treasuries but now it's the Federal Reserve and Japan.

But the idea that you look at that graph as say it's "unappetizing" is dumb. Most foreign governments besides China have INCREASED their UST holdings. The only reason why the % is dropping is because of the massive amount bought by the Fed which messed up the %.

reenorap··on Feeling Sad about AI
I feel the opposite of sad, I am very very excited. I love programming and I love technology, but the stuff I'm doing now is beyond what I could not do on my own, and now I'm spending a few hours building complete end-to-end stuff. This is the golden age for builders.

I created a fully working house simulator, I made a math test creator for my kids, I fixed up some other side projects that I had and added observability, as well as installed Prometheus and Grafana and built grafana dashboards all using AI. It's wonderful.

I plan on building real-time stock price monitors with personalized alerting, taking images from my security cameras and making time lapse videos, trying to do real time predictions on football games/individual plays by having AI monitor the game and based on previous history predict plays/outcomes specifically for sports betting. I need to find the time to figure out how to do all this stuff but what used to be a pipe dream is now 100% possible and accomplishable within days.

reenorap··on iPhone Duo
Apple does this right now. I use AirPlay to extend one laptop into an older laptop so I can have 2 displays when I’m away from home
reenorap··on Tell HN: OpenAI brings back 5 hour limit for plus and business standard users
How is 5 hrs being measured and over what time period?
reenorap··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Droughts are scary and they suck badly. California went through one for 10+ years. However, don’t go off the deep end and think that it’s the “new normal” like Californians did at one point.

All it took was one big rainfall a few years ago, and California has been out of drought ever since then. The reservoirs have been above historic norms and at the end of this summer, it’s only “abnormally dry”. Compare that to a few years ago where the entire state was mostly in an exceptional level of drought.

Droughts and heat waves suck and many people are suffering but nature goes in cycles and it will get better.

reenorap··on Highest-ever ocean temperature measured as powerful El Niño forms
Sf Bay Area didn’t have a single day above 100 this year. Not counting Livermore etc. it’s the first time in a long time I can remember the entire summer being so nice and relatively cool.
reenorap··on Stripe said to abandon $50B pursuit of PayPal
If this is true, the CEO needs to be fired immediately by the Board and negotiations need to be resumed. Paypal has no future, getting 60B would have been a gift to them.
reenorap··on FDA clears blood test to aid evaluation for Alzheimer's disease
I know it’s a joke but then you’ll leave your family bearing the burden of your care. As someone whose parents had dementia, finding a place that treats your parents with dignity is extremely expensive and very rare. We were spending 12k/month and even we needed to set up camera’s and my sister slept with my mom and took care of her like a nurse. When the pandemic hit my sister couldn’t enter so every morning they took my mom, clothed her and sat her facing the bathroom all day long.

The only other alternative is some sort of mental hospital which is more like a prison than anything else.

reenorap··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
That’s false. Maybe a few hours but that’s it. The CBP are expressly not allowed to deny citizens entry into the US.
reenorap··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
> Smart people are smarter than stupid people, but not that much smarter.

This is patently untrue. My middle school kid finished Calculus 1/2 last year and got a 5 on AP without breaking a sweat. He’s taking college calculus this year and we need to figure out what math he’s going to do next year already. He has friends who are younger and even more advanced.

There are genius level kids that are at another plane of intellectual existence. It’s quite something to see.

reenorap··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
It cost me $1600 to change the 4 tires for my Tesla because they are “energy efficient” and matched my original tires. I do not want the tires for my other car to be this expensive. I don’t care about efficiency those tires are literally 4X the price of my other car a Honda.
reenorap··on Software development with AI is starting to feel like cooking steak
Watch Alton Brown’s Good Eats on cooking steak. It takes less that 10 mins cooking time and it’s easy. That gets you 80% of the way there and then the rest is fiddling around for personal taste.
reenorap··on Norway became a global salmon behemoth. Now it's facing the consequences
You are exactly wrong. Farmed salmon has very high levels of heavy metals and PCB because the water where they are farmed is slow moving accumulate pollution. Wild ocean fish swim in the open ocean where overall pollution is less. That’s why if you buy omega 3 tablets it needs to be from ocean fish otherwise you’re getting a high level of toxic chemicals.
