reenorap··on FDA clears blood test to aid evaluation for Alzheimer's disease
I know it’s a joke but then you’ll leave your family bearing the burden of your care. As someone whose parents had dementia, finding a place that treats your parents with dignity is extremely expensive and very rare. We were spending 12k/month and even we needed to set up camera’s and my sister slept with my mom and took care of her like a nurse. When the pandemic hit my sister couldn’t enter so every morning they took my mom, clothed her and sat her facing the bathroom all day long.

The only other alternative is some sort of mental hospital which is more like a prison than anything else.

reenorap··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
That’s false. Maybe a few hours but that’s it. The CBP are expressly not allowed to deny citizens entry into the US.
reenorap··on Why aren't smart people happier? (2022)
> Smart people are smarter than stupid people, but not that much smarter.

This is patently untrue. My middle school kid finished Calculus 1/2 last year and got a 5 on AP without breaking a sweat. He’s taking college calculus this year and we need to figure out what math he’s going to do next year already. He has friends who are younger and even more advanced.

There are genius level kids that are at another plane of intellectual existence. It’s quite something to see.

reenorap··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
It cost me $1600 to change the 4 tires for my Tesla because they are “energy efficient” and matched my original tires. I do not want the tires for my other car to be this expensive. I don’t care about efficiency those tires are literally 4X the price of my other car a Honda.
reenorap··on Software development with AI is starting to feel like cooking steak
Watch Alton Brown’s Good Eats on cooking steak. It takes less that 10 mins cooking time and it’s easy. That gets you 80% of the way there and then the rest is fiddling around for personal taste.
reenorap··on Norway became a global salmon behemoth. Now it's facing the consequences
You are exactly wrong. Farmed salmon has very high levels of heavy metals and PCB because the water where they are farmed is slow moving accumulate pollution. Wild ocean fish swim in the open ocean where overall pollution is less. That’s why if you buy omega 3 tablets it needs to be from ocean fish otherwise you’re getting a high level of toxic chemicals.
reenorap··on Plug-in solar is coming. Plug-in batteries should follow
Why bother? Power companies will complain they are losing money and regulators will allow them to buy energy from residential solar panels basically for free (NEM 3.0). This is California.

California has spent decades convincing people to convert to solar panels and EVs and now that many have switched, they doubled electricity prices and told us not to charge when it’s too hot. Now they want solar panel owners to pay a surcharge for “connecting to the grid”, upwards of $100/month or more than my actual solar bill. It’s all a scam.

reenorap··on Google kills Earth AI generator after one day
I think if Google stopped retreating so quickly with its tail between its legs after getting “embarrassed”, people would stop caring. All of the “sins” that were created via this is nothing that other AI couldn’t produce either.

Part of the sport in making Google look bad is because they know Google will predictably cower when they are embarrassed. If they just said “ya, sometimes people will make bad pics but who cares?” people would stop caring.

Everything that Ars Technica found in my opinion is nothing that other AI image generators couldn’t do on their own. What’s the big deal?

reenorap··on New HIV vaccine shows unprecedented success in preclinical study
FYI teen pregnancy in the US is the lowest it’s ever been in the history of the country.
reenorap··on A missing underscore sent innocent man to prison for 18 months
Holy fuck! How can someone without no evidence and completely innocent be convicted of an offense like this in Canada? What in the fuck is going on?? What happened to “guilty beyond a reasonable doubt?”

Everyone needs to be investigated for this, this is absolutely unbelievable and sickening!

reenorap··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
There’s no way to prove intent if you keep your mouth shut and don’t answer anything.
reenorap··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
Have the duress PIN on sticker on your phone. Maybe put it backwards and don’t say anything to border patrol. Have them try it out and erase the phone and then you can legitimately say you didn’t do anything and they did it themselves.
reenorap··on Park by Robot at London Gatwick Airport
The cookie screen for this web site is the most deceitful I’ve come across in a long time. How do I report this?
reenorap··on Apple targets dozens of OpenAI employees with legal letters
Apple must have hard evidence on this. I can’t believe they would take it this far without already knowing they are going to win. If they have to fire a huge chunk of their hardware employees it’s going to throw their IPO plans into chaos.
reenorap··on Ask HN: Should I do a CS masters at Cambridge or start as a new grad at Amazon?
Jobs are precious right now, especially at a name brand big tech company. That is worth much more than a masters degree. Having real job experience is hard to get right now so forgoing that for further education that is only incrementally useful over a bachelors degree is not worth it
reenorap··on Ask HN: Should I do a CS masters at Cambridge or start as a new grad at Amazon?
TAKE THE JOB OFFER.

You can always get your Masters if you get laid off. Jobs are precious especially for new grads. Do not make the mistake of passing over this job offer, it’s worth so much more than a masters degree. You can always get your master’s later on, for example if you get laid off from Amazon and can’t find another job.

reenorap··on How we can reduce traffic congestion
So basically sending some people on worse routes for the sake of the “greater good”? I long suspected they did this and is not what I want. I don’t want to be forced to a worse outcome for myself just for the sake of the “greater good”. Taken to its logical extreme, lots of evil had been propagated because of the “greater good”.
reenorap··on The shingles vaccine may reduce the risk of dementia
The video explains why the analysis is wrong and gives a very clear graph of how when you look at the proper data, there’s no benefit from the shingles vaccine for dementia. The signal is clear as day.

FWIW Eric Topol is an extremely unreliable source. He has “fame” but most of his stories end up being wrong because of his poor analysis like the review above. I subscribed to him during the pandemic when he migrated to substack but ended my subscription after countless bad articles.

reenorap··on The shingles vaccine may reduce the risk of dementia
It’s the opposite. Observational studies are very biased by the selection process and the only way to get signal from them is rct.
reenorap··on The shingles vaccine may reduce the risk of dementia
This finding of shingles and dementia is likely due to “healthy vaccinee” bias as per the link someone else posted below:

https://youtu.be/qlTnnQytOJ0?is=XJ0c5pWVV6Lg0IMs

As per one of the slides around 7 minutes in, there are many vaccines that show a 20-40% reduction in mortality and dementia.

The talk above basically says that “observational studies” may show great results, like the so-called protective action of the shingles vaccine against dementia. However when brought to a well designed RCT all those benefits don’t actually show up. And the speaker shows later on that the shingles vaccines shows a marked benefit for shingles but nothing for dementia.

reenorap··on Under federal rule, colleges must leave grads better off or lose financial aid
This is wonderful. Hopefully this is an extinction level event for all of the toxic degree factories that were created just to take advantage of the non-dischargeable student loans. US tuition almost tripled in the last 15 years but the quality of education didn’t triple.

Trump himself took advantage of this by creating Trump university which was a for-profit degree mill.

All of those “schools” needs to be wiped off the map and hopefully get replaced by schools that show real value.

reenorap··on Female US rower completes historic solo journey from California to Hawaii
I happened upon her via Instagram around day 10 and watched her every day. It was really interesting watching her go through this every day and her authentic posts about what she was feeling. It’s truly great seeing people achieve their goals like this, she is amazing!
reenorap··on We made Grok 4.5, GPT-5.5, and Claude build the same apps
How can grok create a coding LLM at the same level as OpenAI or Anthropic when they don’t have the same amount of AI talent as the other companies by an order of magnitude? Is it really that easy to train a coding model like that?
reenorap··on Is The Economist Always Wrong?
No, only since Bernanke. So it’s very recent and not something that was historically done by Fed chairs.
reenorap··on Do you hate XML? (2010)
I’ve hated XML since 2004. The worst part about it is the tags vs attributes fights. They both do the same thing and the only difference is preference. Having two ways of doing the same thing invite and incite religious positions and cause unnecessary fighting. There should be one, opinionated way of doing things so you avoid confusion.
reenorap··on Why I'm Forced to Say Farewell: Google Management Has Lost Its Moral Compass
He is worth well over $20M given his title and the skyrocketing of Google stock since 2017. He could have left years ago if he were really so morally outraged.

There’s nothing more useless than a multi-millionaire “finally” taking a moral stand on something. I guarantee that this same person without the money would not have posted this ridiculous manifesto declaring his moral piety.

If he donates all his wealth away because it was made “immorally” then I will change my stance. We both know he won’t and that’s how we know his courage is really just because he’s rich.

reenorap··on Why I'm Forced to Say Farewell: Google Management Has Lost Its Moral Compass
Translation: “My GSUs that I received at $35 and upwards for the last 10 years have made me enough money such that I can now finally make the “moral” decision that I’ve always wanted to do but was willing to swallow until I made enough money. Now I can pretend I was always the moral person that I purport to be, even though not much has actually changed except my financially-improved courage.”
reenorap··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
Wow the top end MacBook Pro with 128 GB memory went up $1600 overnight!
reenorap··on Windows 11 New Media Player Uses 3.5x More RAM, Charges for Popular Video Codecs
From CS101 it’s called virtual memory. Things get swapped in and out of memory when they need to. An extra 200MB of memory when Chrome takes gigabytes of memory is a petty thing to complain about.

How much do you want to bet you don’t even use windows media player? It’s fake outrage and if you care that much use VLC.

reenorap··on How to setup a local coding agent on macOS
My biggest pet peeve with all these articles on local AI is the only thing they talk about is tokens per second. No one mentions the quality of the answers. No one. I don't mind waiting a little longer if the quality is better. Quickly serving me slop doesn't make it more useful. Are people really only looking at tokens per second?
