reeealloc··on What Tech Workers Don't Understand They've Lost by WFH
which CEO who spent millions on an office people don't use wrote this?
reeealloc··on How many school shootings this week?
What way would you suggest to change the school shooting issue without highlighting it? This actually could be the best way of doing that: Highlighting the shooting itself but not the terrorist responsible.
reeealloc··on Facebook is nearing a reputational point of no return
That's surprising, they have no intention of hiding that Insta is a FB app. It says Instagram by Facebook when you open it.
reeealloc··on EU plans to force OEMs to use a common charger for all phones
Presumably unbundled chargers will be fine with USB-C on everything. It's not proprietary like Apple's chargers and easy to find.
reeealloc··on Afghan president flees the country as Taliban move on Kabul
The US pulled out on purpose to give the taliban some ground so that they'll have an excuse to go back. My guess is troops will be back there soon.
reeealloc··on Let's write a compiler, part 1: Introduction, selecting a language, and planning
Wrote a compiler with .NET last year. Used F# for the Lexing/Parsing to an AST and C# for LLVM IR code gen. Interop was so easy, but the docs for the C# LLVM bindings were not so great, so it's a little incomplete. I only got it to effectively interpret, never actually executed a whole outputted object file.
reeealloc··on Global minimum corporate tax: 130 nations to support U.S. proposal

reeealloc··on California will pay off all past due rent
Who cares if they're fine. Last time I checked, we don't check if parasites are fine.
reeealloc··on Will Linux phones stay around this time?
But a good portion of them are riddled with google
reeealloc··on Is Capitalism Saving Us?
This is a miserable take. You think the rich care about your rights? Other than your right to spend your money on their shit, they don't care.

Looking for an entry level position. I'm excited to write good software for people to use.

reeealloc··on Degoogling My Life
It feels pointless to be on the Mac/iOS bandwagon and degoogle, you're just replacing invasive software with more invasive software.
reeealloc··on Emacs Survey
No, it's not.
reeealloc··on Your Phone Is Your Castle
Y'all are really complaining about an ad in an post that makes reasonable claims. At a grand scale they're right, your phone is not your castle.
reeealloc··on Trump: 'A lot of people' think Edward Snowden 'not being treated fairly'
Can someone explain why the GOP wants this? Isn't Snowden a disaster for them?
reeealloc··on I Hope the Search for Extraterrestrial Life Finds Nothing (2008) [pdf]
The big assumption here that really bothers me is that any civilization that developed the technology to expand into the galaxy would've found us by now. That's so bogus. We can probably expand to Mars, but we're still bound by the speed of light.
reeealloc··on Salmonella outbreak linked to onions in 43 US states
Why can't this salmonella be cooked out safely?
reeealloc··on TikTok to Sue Trump Administration over Ban, as Soon as Tuesday
Your points about TikTok's content compared to Twitter's content are interesting, but seem anecdotal and personal to you. I use Twitter almost exclusively for art, and I try to avoid any politics trending or people attacking each other or Trump. TikTok has an abundance of politically-charged content from people with different political views, but it's just not always on the surface (although sometimes it is).
reeealloc··on Hackathon and Challenge to build a new Terminal – $20k investment
I disagree on the point that the terminal needs innovation. Clis are what need the innovation. They're rather inaccessible to anyone who's never used vim or emacs, and modern workflows just give no incentives to switch to them.

Obviously if you're already proficient in clis you'd never trade them for a gui, but if you're proficient in a gui then why use a cli (for a reason other than bloat)?

reeealloc··on [dead]
Big surprise genital mutilation at birth because god said so is a bad idea
reeealloc··on A non-moral dilemma about cheating, but it brings up some points (2019)
I'm not a teacher, so maybe I should just stay out of it, but I'm of the opinion that teachers should try to help cheaters the same way they help failing students. Cheating is really just a proxy for failure, so why not just treat it the same as failing?

That being said, some kinds of cheating don't deserved to be punished. The given scenario is bad for the cheater, but some students put so much effort into writing notes to cheat with that they just end up doing the amount of effort required to pass.

reeealloc··on Tell HN: Call Mom
I'm fortunate enough to be a student and have a mom to go home to between semesters. Call her :)
