redsummer··on Anne Frank and her family were also denied entry as refugees to the U.S
Which country is geographically closer to Syria? Israel or Sweden?
redsummer··on Anne Frank and her family were also denied entry as refugees to the U.S
Israel should share the burden, especially as they are next door. 100 refugees is pathetic. 5 million refugees should be admitted right now.

Isn't it strange that 1000 American rabbis can call on the US to accept Syrian refugees? Are there 1000 Israeli rabbis doing the same? Don't they remember Anne Frank?

redsummer··on Anne Frank and her family were also denied entry as refugees to the U.S
There are about 5 million refugees outside Syria and more than 5 million internally displaced in Syria. 100 is nothing.

Sweden and Israel both have populations of about 10 million. Sweden has taken in 200-300 THOUSAND. Israel promises to take in 100 and pats itself on the back.

redsummer··on Anne Frank and her family were also denied entry as refugees to the U.S
Number of Syrian refugees let in to Israel: ZERO

And it's right next door.

redsummer··on Craig Newmark donates $500k to reduce harassment on Wikipedia
"support the development of tools for volunteer editors and staff to reduce harassment on Wikipedia and block harassers."

The only harassment I've seen on Wikipedia is from Little Napoleon long-term admins who grind contributors down with petty bureaucracy.

redsummer··on Raspberry Pi 3 based home automation with Node.js and React Native
I managed to get bilingual voice activation (Alexa and Siri/HomeKit - maybe Google Home in future) working with Home Assistant, homebridge, pi-mote, raspberry pi 3 and four energenie sockets. (In the US I guess you could use etekcity sockets)

https://home-assistant.io

https://github.com/nfarina/homebridge

https://energenie4u.co.uk/catalogue/product/ENER314

https://energenie4u.co.uk/catalogue/product/ENER002-4

I wouldn't call it simple to set up, but it was cheap - about £70 (not including Alexa device, which could even be the same pi - https://github.com/alexa/alexa-avs-sample-app/wiki/Raspberry... )

redsummer··on Show HN: The Quibbler aggregates “fake news”
Seems to be 'stuff that the mainstream media doesn't cover or want you to know' rather than fake news.

From the about page: 'The Quibbler aggregates relevant news flagged as "fake news" by the media. It also provides links to corresponding Reddit discussions. It works by using "fake news" lists like the ones published by Washington Post. It also uses lists of news that is removed from social media.'

redsummer··on In Its Third Month, India’s Cash Shortage Begins to Bite
The US doesn't have the freedoms people have in India.
redsummer··on Amazon Echo update adds “Computer” wake word to complete the Star Trek fantasy
We need just need the 60s futurist flashing coloured lights and we can all pretend to be Spock on the bridge of the Enterprise. (Could probably be done with a pi)
redsummer··on The Impacts of Video Games on Cognition (2015) [pdf]
Are there ANY games which improve real-life skills? Games are often said to improve you in some way, to up-skill you, but I'm not sure I've ever seen evidence.
redsummer··on Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos meet "Ginger" (2003)
I think seeing pictures of Woz on his Segway put me off the idea. He seemed to balloon since getting one.
redsummer··on Modern Tech inside an Amish Horse-Drawn Buggy
You might think you would prefer to live now rather than 1900, but I would suspect that the word "live" had greater meaning then.

Here is Ben Franklin on the appeal of the traditional Native American life: "When an Indian Child has been brought up among us, taught our language and habituated to our Customs, yet if he goes to see his relations and make one Indian Ramble with them, there is no perswading him ever to return, and that this is not natural [to them] merely as Indians, but as men, is plain from this, that when white persons of either sex have been taken prisoners young by the Indians, and lived a while among them, tho' ransomed by their Friends, and treated with all imaginable tenderness to prevail with them to stay among the English, yet in a Short time they become disgusted with our manner of life, and the care and pains that are necessary to support it, and take the first good Opportunity of escaping again into the Woods, from whence there is no reclaiming them"

redsummer··on Modern Tech inside an Amish Horse-Drawn Buggy
The Amish are happier than almost all Americans: http://scienceblogs.com/cortex/2007/03/16/happiness-wealth-a...

You want those communities to collapse, because you see no other solutions except more tech, more greed, more 'progress'. That's the hamster wheel you've been given. What other life could there be?

redsummer··on Modern Tech inside an Amish Horse-Drawn Buggy
A lot of people think the Amish are against technology. In fact, they carefully consider the technology's effect on themselves and their community. Will it really help, or is it just a new thing which will cause unintended consequences? For instance, some Amish groups accepted cars, and their community disappeared - when anyone can drive anywhere the community collapsed. Now there are no Amish who allow cars. The same thing would happen with the internet. Tech people like ourselves automatically assume that technology is some advance, or improvement. Our peers tell us this, our incomes depend on us believing this. In fact, technology does not improve the human condition in most cases. It erodes it. We would be better making careful decisions like the Amish, but our civilisation is locked onto this myth of 'progress'.

Technology should be for us, not the other way around. Unlike the Amish, we put the cart before the horse.

redsummer··on TINY: VNC for DOS
Before I clicked the link I imagined that this was some sort of VNC client which worked inside a terminal window. Does such a thing exist?

(I mean something like this - https://github.com/mustafaakin/terminal-webcam/blob/master/R... - except with a VNC image)

redsummer··on iPhone at ten: the revolution continues
Unfortunately its success has warped Apple. Cook has ignored the Mac and promoted iOS as the 'everyday computing' platform. His bet hasn't paid off though. iPad sales have been declining since 2014. Even iPhone sales have peaked because of Apple's anti-customer policies (how do you plug your lightning headphones into your Mac?). Reliance on one product is very dangerous.
redsummer··on Why read old philosophy?
The old philosophers had much greater breadth because the whole vista was open to them. They were treading on soil for the first time. Newer philosophers are dry academics who are just filling in a few details. Who wants to read that?
redsummer··on DJI acquires majority stake in Hasselblad, the iconic Swedish camera company
Another important Swedish company bought by the Chinese, after Volvo and Saab.
redsummer··on LEDs may cause retinal toxicity at occupational domestic illuminance
When new phones or displays come out, the manufacturer will invariably brag about the increased color gamut. Before I get blinded with science, it's time to adjust my f.lux and night shift settings.
redsummer··on Apple to slice iPhone production 10% due to sluggish sales
There's some real accountant-level decision making at Apple at the moment.

For instance, the MacBook Pro is exactly 3 lbs and the MacBook is 2 lbs. They were designed with weight contraints in mind rather than the user. You have to buy a DongleBook because of that.

Rather than a delightful experience, there is the feeling of having being conned and someone making your wallet lighter.

Not surprising considering who is in charge.

redsummer··on I'm at Fog Creek, and we're introducing Gomix
Judging from the lack of clarity in his post, he doesn't seem to know what his own product is. But he sure knows that he is the new CEO (he mentions it a few times). And he certainly thinks the successes of Fog Creek somehow reflect on him - in fact he talks about that more than the product.
redsummer··on I'm at Fog Creek, and we're introducing Gomix
Anil Dash seems like a deeply creepy guy.

He inserts race into everything: https://twitter.com/marcoarment/status/336853407698657280

He gets people fired for making jokes: http://archive.is/ddDFz

I'm sure Gomix will have some level of success, though I have no idea what it is from his post - which just seems to be about how his is now CEO and all the glory is his. I wonder how his team feel about that? Perhaps some of them are white, so the team doesn't matter?

redsummer··on How Vienna produced ideas that shaped the West
Where is the modern Vienna?
redsummer··on Ask HN: What are other minimal, all-content, no-frills discussion sites like HN?
MF is a pay-to-post site, so it is skewed towards people who will pay. It's the same as those small elite colleges where people will study something impractical for an exhorbitant fee. You would only pay if you agreed with whatever the orthodoxy is. And it becomes self-selecting, and self-perpetuating. The people on MF are the sort of people who would say "OMG I can't believe anyone voted for Trump, because nobody I know did"
redsummer··on Campus Identity Politics Is Dooming Liberal Causes
The people who are criticised in this article do not seem to be changing course by trying to understand the mood of the country, and the reasons for Clinton's defeat. Trump will be 'literally Hitler' for these people for a long time. There needs to be real diversity - diversity of opinion - in the universities. Otherwise we will have a generation of whiny babies.
redsummer··on Things You Notice When You Quit the News
He mentions: "instead of reading the back and forth of a daily, why not read a weekly review? Instead of a weekly review, why not read a monthly magazine? Instead of a monthly magazine, why not read an annual book?"

Can anyone recommend such a weekly or monthly review? One that isn't particularly ideological. It would save so much time.

redsummer··on Amazon Go

redsummer··on Sal Soghoian Departs Apple
I think Tim Cook needs to leave. Like Ballmer, he has brought in the money, but at the cost of crippling the future of the company.

redsummer··on From Syria to Sweden – 200 voices on escaping the war
The Swedish press and government will publish anything positive about Syrians in Sweden. But they will not publish anything about the massive increase in rapes.
