redsummer··on Grid Garden – A game for learning CSS grid
Haven't worked in CSS for about 5 years, but managed to get thru this. Are there any other decent games to learn CSS and JS?
redsummer··on The Mac Pro Lives
What do they mean by a 'modular system'? Like the old Mac Pro, with the side door? Or like hifi separates, with a separate GPU, CPU, box of ports etc?
redsummer··on How Utah Keeps the American Dream Alive
I read the linked religious texts and the story doesn't seem compelling enough for me to stop drinking the Leffe at my elbow. The fictional story has to to good enough to resonate as a truth. Aesop had the right idea.
redsummer··on How Utah Keeps the American Dream Alive
The y in that is the supernatural stuff - the story. I wouldn't go to see a movie if it didn't have a good story. I wouldn't go if it was just a list of facts. But that's what the dull modern atheists types want me to do in life.
redsummer··on How Utah Keeps the American Dream Alive
True, but history produces a variety of personalities so a longer established religion will be more rounded. Schools of thought will generate opposing schools of thought etc. Like if you throw a tennis ball hard into a circular room it will end up going pretty much everywhere.
redsummer··on How Utah Keeps the American Dream Alive
Perhaps not to compensate, but to validate. You would never feel compelled to act in a certain way because the sky is blue, or because water is wet. But if you have a political or religious belief, however absurd, you feel a compulsion to act.
redsummer··on How Utah Keeps the American Dream Alive
Utah is more like what the US used to be like. Demographically, it's like early 60s America. Whiter, higher social trust, more Christian, neighborly, higher work ethic, higher rates of marriage, more kids, fewer illegitimate kids, no grievance industry etc. Many of these factors are looked down on by people of a certain political outlook. Seen as regressive. And yet they're happier in Utah.

The Mormons try harder to keep on the straight and narrow because their religion is less authentic - it's made up by a couple of PT Barnum types, rather than centuries of tradition. You don't need to try hard if you're resting on a thousand years of tradition.

Perhaps the lesson is that you should join the most absurd religion (or invent your own) and then make up for its absurdity strive to live a good life in order to prove the effectiveness of the religion.

redsummer··on Why Classroom Technology Is Costing More Than Its Worth (2016)
It is far worse than other nonsense. Can you think of one advantage of computer technology in the classroom? Tech company PR is really good, but edu tech is really just part of the corporate takeover of education that's happened over the last few decades.

Additionally, almost all technology will be superseded by AI in the future, which means that training young kids in technology is literally preparing them for unemployment. At best, kids trained in tech will be used as flesh-and-blood beta versions of future AIs. I would go as far to say that exposing kids unnecessarily to technology is a form of child abuse. A very rounded education is preferable to being unemployed and tech-literate, bitter at the AI that is doing the job that you trained for.

redsummer··on Why Classroom Technology Is Costing More Than Its Worth (2016)
Computer tech in education is a con. It is completely unnecessary.

There's a reason Steve Jobs limited his kids access to technology: http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/gadgets-and-tech/new...

In fact, it has opposite effect to what is intended. It gives the child an avalanche of distraction, when what they need is simplicity. I would say the same about mobile phones.

Where is the code?
redsummer··on UK triggers the official Brexit process in a letter to EU
A great thing about autonomy is the ability to quickly solve national problems. Compare and contrast non-EU Iceland and EU Greece. Both came near to collapse due to financial crises. Iceland jailed the bankers and recovered. Greece is in the EU straight-jacket, the corrupt bankers became kings and the people will be in debt bondage for decades.

Brexit is comparable to the Berlin Wall falling. Like the Soviet Union, the technocratic elites could not imagine it collapsing until the people willed it.

redsummer··on UK triggers the official Brexit process in a letter to EU
Great news. Of the four happiest countries in the world, three are European countries outside the EU. Autonomy is crucial to happiness.
redsummer··on Staying Rich Without Manufacturing Will Be Hard
China can’t even make a ball-point pen: http://www.ejinsight.com/20160121-what-ball-pen-tells-us-abo...

Or even ball-bearings: http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/a20837/german-chi...

Most of China’s industrial robots are made by Germany, the US, and Japan. The Chinese are hopeless at precision engineering.

redsummer··on I’m Not “Black Enough” for Inc. Magazine
The culture has an ideology about race which is shared and fed by the media. It's almost a nostalgia for the sixties where people want to pin halos on themselves by pretending its the 60s and that they are fighting against segregated buses etc.

The demand for stories which fit this narrative outstrip the supply. The same thing can be seen with various 'hate crimes' which are eventually revealed as hoaxes. The media - and the public - are strangely desperate for this bigoted world to exist - because they can feel more noble fighting it.

I'm guessing it has something to do with all the ideological refugees, in academia and the media, from the 60s and 70s who are fighting battles that are long over.

redsummer··on How to Extract Data from Wikipedia and Wikidata
Is there a way to use a local version of Wikipedia (english) on a raspberry pi? That can be accessed and searched via the shell? On a USB stick. Images and media fils excluded.

I know there is Gozim - http://scaleway.nobugware.com - but that serves a local website.

redsummer··on An Indian Ocean island with a community that has been there for 60K years (2015)
It's a shame that any significant contact would wipe the Sentinelese out. Even a common cold infection would be the end of them.

If we wanted to learn anything about the Sentinelese, then perhaps we could use well-camouflaged camera traps, and other electronic eavesdropping devices. The moral considerations are difficult - it's a privacy breach, but the information would also be valuable not only to their descendants (should contact be made), but also to science generally. I think I would be happy if my Viking ancestors had been filmed 1000 years ago.

redsummer··on Loopy: a tool for thinking in systems
Would be interesting to see the 'systems' for various start-ups. And compare those that were successful with those that were not.
redsummer··on Ancient Romans depicted Huns as barbarians – their bones tell a different story
The US did the breaking. Sweden had to 'own it'.

redsummer··on My Text Editor Journey: Vim, Spacemacs, Atom and Sublime Text
I tried to learn Emacs, but the time allegedly saved by using it was more than countered by the time fiddling with it to get it working properly. I'd rather have a pencil than a self-assembled typewriter.
redsummer··on iPhone 7 “Product Red” Special Edition
A source: https://web.archive.org/web/20070624105650/http://www.africo...

$100 million on marketing and billboards etc. $18 million actually raised. That was 2007.

redsummer··on Gay men and lesbian women less likely to be employed in a leadership position
People are pretty accurate at judging 'gay faces': https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/bering-in-mind/somethin...

I'm sure voices are similar. I expect an AI would be able to distinguish without too many problems.

redsummer··on iPhone 7 “Product Red” Special Edition
Product RED spends more on advertising and it's executives than any causes.
redsummer··on The Antidesktop (2002)
I meant macho - as in a hairy-chested man hunting for animals with a simple spear (shell, tmux). Versus getting a microwave meal from the supermarket and slobbing out on the sofa (GUI). Such things are on my mind after I posted a couple of things about what approach was best:

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13890342

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13919186

I'm starting to believe more in 'no pain, no gain'

redsummer··on The Antidesktop (2002)
I'm drawn to this kind of setup, but I'm aware that there is an element of techno-machoism to it. It can seem more aspirational than useful.
redsummer··on The Antidesktop (2002)
I'm not familiar with Chrome. Can it be tiled in this way? I thought it was one tabbed window.
redsummer··on The Antidesktop (2002)
Are you using mac or Linux? If Linux, what window manager?
redsummer··on The Antidesktop (2002)
A lot of dev folks should (in theory) be able to get away with just having a browser on one side of the screen and a CLI terminal with tmux on the other. Both windows with tabs, and fixed in position.

What kind of setup should be used for this? I know I can do this with split screens on the Mac. But is there a minimal Linux setup which provides this kind of experience?

redsummer··on They Used To Last 50 Years
Yeah, I forgot about the Henry and George. A good choice if you're in the UK (made in UK). Hotels and office cleaners use them a lot - which is a sure mark of reliability.

I've actually got a Neato robot vac now. I'm not sure if moving chairs and rugs etc to prepare the way for the robot takes more time than actually non-robot vacuuming. It's calming to see it go around on its own though.

redsummer··on Apple is betting on augmented reality
And how are people supposed to develop for this new technology if they haven't released a Mac pro for nearly 4 years, and graphic card support is well behind Windows?
