redmaple892··on Apple and a hacker's future
See that was my first thought. But I hear this in my daily life as well- some people are using agents for everything. I know one person who went all in on Meta Muse and gets texts for everything he cares about - even unprompted...I don't believe that "chat" in general is the best interface for everything but it is powerful...
redmaple892··on Apple and a hacker's future
> What’s better, using a structured reminders app that you have to check, or simply being reminded directly by an agent? In truth the answer will likely vary by person, but it’s worth pointing out that Apple is so married to the app paradigm that they probably never even considered the alternative.

This was the most interesting part to me. I wonder what this divide looks like in the real world. I have a hard time believing this is true for everyone:

> I don’t want a different UI per app, when I have at my disposal true UI — the Universal Interface for everything digital.

redmaple892··on A warning about 'model welfare'
Anyone know what the source of the header image is?
redmaple892··on Wind and solar overtake fossil fuels in Germany for the first time
I knew as soon as I read your comment that multiple people would object to your use of 'conservative' instead of focus on the point (as if the opposing political views lack integrity, values, respect for law, etc).

In any case I think the reason comes down to money/power structures and short-term thinking. We have two corporate controlled parties with one that is wholly owned and the other which allows a tiny sliver of dissent. Fossil fuels will never completely go away but anything that questions the entire infrastructure (worldwide, including the need for bases in producing countries), is seen as a threat to the status quo. In this way I don't see it as any different than teams protecting their turf in a large company which stifles innovation.

redmaple892··on Darktable
Interesting - I have no experience with refern.app but my couple month impression of digiKam is that it's quite flexible in terms of tagging and organization. It's also quite fast for my ~20GB collection of photos. It is definitely geared towards photography so many of the utilities (geotagging, camera metadata) might be useless for you.
redmaple892··on Darktable
I don't edit RAW too often so haven't invested the time and effort into Darktable. I have been very impressed by digiKam for organization and catalog management though. I refuse to be sucked into another proprietary database (e.g. Lightroom) and utilities like osxphotos made it easy to turn Apple photos into regular files that digiKam serves up nicely. My goal is to have access to the entire 'archive' on my NAS.

I do miss macOS system controls like zooming in and out via touchpad. In general though, I'm not doing a ton of editing and for my large library, digiKam is working nicely. I tried capture1 for editing but it was more than I needed. I'm glad Darktable exists for folks needing raw editing. I wonder if it produces the Fujifilm specific colors as well as C1?

redmaple892··on We're Squandering LEDs' Potential to Save Our Night Skies
Awesome thank you for sharing. I recently bought a very basic low-voltage system just to have something in the garden but would like to upgrade exterior fixtures at some point and your system seems nice.
redmaple892··on LEDs’ potential to save our night skies
What type of system are you using outdoors?
redmaple892··on LEDs’ potential to save our night skies
I read the entire article and am really glad the author took time to write this down and for OP for posting. I am so tired of poor (mostly outdoor) but also indoor lighting. I have felt crazy feeling that the so-called "better" LED's in parks and on paths have felt like less lighting. Unfortunately I think changing things (in the US) often requires proving harm...science and aesthetics don't seem to matter much at all many place.
redmaple892··on Age verification is just a precursor to automated attribution of speech
Technically true but as the commentator below you says, easily circumvented. Perhaps it's better to think of privacy/freedom of thought as a global human right...
redmaple892··on Age verification is just a precursor to automated attribution of speech
I hear these alarm bells but what I don't understand is what the solution is to non-human or state actor internet commenting or social media campaigns. Most (maybe all?) sites are full of this. Without any sort of verification - how can this ever be solved?
redmaple892··on AI is making me dumb
I'm curious about how people link ideas and remember them. If you don't mind sharing, what was your process to save and remember this particular post from 2018?
redmaple892··on All Those A.I. Note Takers? They're Making Lawyers Nervous
Surprised healthcare isn't called out specifically. AI note takers have exploded in popularity in the US.
