redkoala··on Lychee – Self-hosted photo-management done right
Can someone suggest workflows / products to sync / delete photos off multiple iPhones within the same family to the cloud?
redkoala··on How to build a personal webpage from scratch
side topic - instead of teaching PHP in your Advanced Web Development course, consider teaching React instead?
redkoala··on Ask HN: What are the use cases of WASM outside the browser?
CosmWasm provides a smart contract execution layer for Cosmos application blockchains.
redkoala··on Tell HN: Reddit shadowban account upon creation
Twitter is also more aggressive with verification challenges when I use a VPN.
redkoala··on Traditional packaging is not suitable for modern applications?
There are design choices that can be made to guarantee namespace isolation - having different software packages installed within the same /usr/bin/ directory is a guarantee for namespace collisions.
redkoala··on I came up with a better way to communicate with users
You'll need to build in content moderation in an open group chat (ala shoutbox).

If this is more a one to one chatbot, this is similar to existing chatbot solutions in the marketplace but you could evolve your own spin on it. It seems to be positioned for early stage websites/apps where you can keep up with a low volume of active users.

redkoala··on I’m a productive programmer with a memory of a fruit fly
Is there a solution for this problem in real-life?
redkoala··on How does Glo generate basic income and lift people out of extreme poverty?
Why did you personally chose to work for them? :)
redkoala··on Google Chromium, sans integration with Google
Brave is also based on the Chromium engine, and using any Chromium based browser would work against open web standards.
redkoala··on Launch YC: 3D Web; Training; Child privacy; Pregnancy; Life science; Desk rental
How about "YC S21 Launch"?
redkoala··on Launch HN: UPchieve (YC W21 Nonprofit) – Live tutoring for low-income students
It would be good if your non-profit's economic model eventually allows you to hire a core team of trained teachers and supplement with volunteers. You can also allow college students to mentor high school students for credit experience and offer a letter of experience.
redkoala··on Send: A Fork of Mozilla's Firefox Send
That means no security at all. Without a way to link files being hosted to identity or inspecting the contents of the files, there is no barrier to prevent spam and illegal files from being hosted.
redkoala··on When You’ve Been Fully Vaccinated
Both vaccines are mRNA based, not sure what your daughter’s boyfriend is trying to achieve here. Really wasteful.
redkoala··on Amazon workers vote against unionizing in Alabama
Unions don’t always contribute to a better outcome for their workers, and it looks like working conditions wasn’t a strong enough driver for the majority of the workers. It’s hard to motivate a vote for unions when Amazon pays double the federal minimum wage.
redkoala··on Write libraries instead of services, where possible
App stores should really prevent these type of no value add apps.
redkoala··on The future of web software is HTML over WebSockets
There are severe limitations in what cloud vendors can support on concurrent web socket connections without rolling and maintaining your own. Persistent connections may fit for specific use cases where continuous real-time updates are needed but are a poor fit for most UI - backend interactions.
redkoala··on Judge: Citibank isn't entitled to $500M it sent to various creditors last August
Oracle Flexcube is a packaged banking product. While Citibank did make the choice to purchase the product, the UI design flaw is really inherent in the product itself.

redkoala··on u/DeepFuckingValue and the GameStop Reddit mania
This isn't really the place for financial advice. Matt Levine does publish a newsletter that attempts to unpack the GameStop Reddit mania situation and what it means for the retail investors piling on.
redkoala··on I wasted $40k on a fantastic startup idea
Better healthcare outcomes are of interest to health insurance companies and employers, not the healthcare providers. A reduction in overall claims over a patient's lifetime and better employee health are quantifiable financial results.
redkoala··on Poll: Switching from WhatsApp
One issue is the fractured nature of alternatives would mean limited network effects, if one group moves to Matrix, and another to Signal, and another to Telegram, that means juggling multiple alternatives depending on the groups one is part of.
redkoala··on Microsoft Is Dead (2007)
Interesting to see how Microsoft is resurgent again with their Office 365, Azure, MS Teams, Xbox services and vibrant participation in the open source ecosystem since this article was written in 2007.
redkoala··on Going All in on the Mac App Store
Steam is a desktop App Store done right. If only they would move more into the app space rather than game space.
redkoala··on Stripe’s payments APIs: the first ten years
Is Stripe planning to support additional crypto currencies like ETH, Nano, Monero etc in addition to Bitcoin?

It seems like the same user initiated payment flow and merchant to validate receipt in their blockchain account would apply to other cryto currency payment methods as well.

redkoala··on Sick of spending time on Auth, we built an open source 'Stripe for Auth'
+1 for SAML 2.0 SSO support. I see this gap a lot in early SaaS products, it's a must if your product wants to onboard enterprise customers.
redkoala··on Tsundoku: The art of buying books and never reading them
I find personally that works when I can be free of outside interruptions. If I have to multi-task or respond to others, I can lose the follow track. Also no other deep thought when listening to the books, it has to be really active listening.

I find active reading much faster than active listening if it’s the only thing I do, to the point that I read ahead on podcast transcripts instead of listening to them.

redkoala··on AWS CloudShell
Azure has had a cloud shell for a while as well
redkoala··on Poll: Will you take the Covid vaccine?
Interesting to see the HN crowd poll more likely to take the vaccine (~85% at the time of this comment) compared to Americans polling at 60%. https://www.statnews.com/pharmalot/2020/11/10/harris-poll-co...
redkoala··on AWS just went multi-cloud
It depends on the industry. A lot of retail companies are moving away from Amazon to avoid having competitive data flow through AWS infrastructure. Some companies may have different business units across different cloud providers but push for strategic consolidation on a major cloud provider for new implementations.

The heavier the use of cloud native solutions and managed services, the greater the effort to migrate away from those solutions. Not all workloads run on containers, and even then those applications will need some code refactoring if they depend on cloud infrastructure services (cloud specific storage, queue services, monitoring, etc)

redkoala··on South Africa's lottery probed as 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 drawn
It’s the same likelihood to draw the numbers, however more people are likely to buy that sequence of numbers as it is a very common sequence that people think of.
redkoala··on Six Months of Tiny Projects
Some of the legal considerations that would apply based on the author's comment about things required for a good online store builder:
