reasonabl_human··on This career feels like a few key hours with year-long cool-down periods
May be an over simplification here, I’ve done both and found most web app backends to be more trivial than embedded programming projects.
reasonabl_human··on Always-on Processor magic: How Find My works while iPhone is powered off
Probably an encrypted payload to be forwarded to apples ‘find my’ services
reasonabl_human··on Intel issues end-of-life notice for RealSense Lidar
Can you elaborate on the benefits of what intel built here as opposed to doing the processing on host machines? My company uses these in some products but I never investigated the market or trade space for this type of device
reasonabl_human··on The Linux Experiments YouTube channel has been terminated
Usually I have to type :%s, and a trailing /g, you can omit those?
reasonabl_human··on The New Thermodynamic Understanding of Clocks
Reframing the analysis helps show that your thoughts still fit within the proposed model:

Sundials and astronomical observations are not principle mechanisms of clocks.. they are a window of observation into the clock system of moving planetary bodies. Those planetary bodies indeed follow the thermodynamic principles outlined.

Imagine you had a rotating disc occluding a light source with a thin slot cut in the disc such that every rotation at one small interval the light source is visible. Rotate it using, say, a coiled spring, and you have a clock, revealing a pulse of light with a constant frequency. This is easy enough to fit into the mold of a thermodynamic clock as proposed in the article.

Now, we can think of earth orbiting the sun similarly to our disc rotating in front of the light source…. Every time earth rotates on its axis, half is exposed to the light and half is not…. Quite a wide ‘slot’ cut into our planetary ‘disc’, not useful for much more than knowing what day it is.

All a sundial does is narrow that ‘slot’ to make a more accurate observation of our planetary clock’s state.

Same goes for observing other planets / stars etc. While these planetary motions appear to be ‘regular and sustained’ on our timescales, they are still subject to the same thermodynamic principles as all other matter, and reach lower entropy over time, until the heat death of the universe :(

Someone posted about two bodies orbiting each other, and not know time forward from backward.. again, you can’t ignore physics, those orbits will measurably and irreversibly decay over time until the bodies collide.. just not on timescales that would effect our species using them as clocks!

reasonabl_human··on Work Hard (2007)
Thanks, needed to hear this today.
reasonabl_human··on The QSBS Tax Exemption: A Valuable Benefit for Startup Founders and Builders
Out if curiosity, how did you invest in a YC company so early? Did you have a personal connection to that particular company or were looking to invest in startups?
reasonabl_human··on I switched from macOS to Linux after 15 years of Apple
One stack everywhere is not a ground breaking concept since Java did it from an architecture stand point, but Electron is doing it in a new and unique way: one stack across across desktop, web, mobile - device classes instead of just architecture / OS. Same concept applied differently as I see it.
reasonabl_human··on I switched from macOS to Linux after 15 years of Apple
What do those window management tools accomplish that Rectangle doesn’t for free? I recently switched to macOS as a daily driver for work and the non-existent window management in macOS is disappointing
reasonabl_human··on Interview with Jim Anderson, CEO of Lattice Semiconductor
Thanks for the perspective. For someone who used to study EE / basic digital design but took the software route as a career, do you have suggestions on FPGA projects to contribute to on the side akin to the software world’s ability to contribute to an endless number of open source projects? I would love to chip away at learning how to work with anything more complex than the academic Xilinx boards we used in school years ago.
reasonabl_human··on Texas Instruments new TI-84 Plus CE Python graphing calculator
It blows my mind that TI has such a stranglehold on the educational calculator market. Producing a TI-84 must be a few bucks vs. the >$100 they sold them for when I was in school.

Does anybody know of open source alternatives that could be pushed in the classroom? There’s no way they can patent math..

reasonabl_human··on Analysts corroborate rumors that upcoming MacBook Pro will ditch the Touch Bar
The 12 mini fits this niche well if you haven’t checked it out yet
reasonabl_human··on DoorDash removing 1-year cliff for equity grants
My non-new-grad employment with Microsoft had a 1yr vesting cliff. As others have previously mentioned, as long as it’s an established company I see no issue with this since you get a solid signing bonus if continued cash flow is the concern.
reasonabl_human··on World’s smallest, best acoustic amplifier emerges from 50-year-old hypothesis
Look into the formal definition of a field in physics, and particle / wave duality, to gain clarity on electrons vs electromagnetic waves.. the math of wave mechanics is generally common across waves propagating in different types of fields, although I’m not sure if that’s what you’re getting at.
reasonabl_human··on GAN Theft Auto [video]
This exists via recent NLP models, I’ll see if I can dig up a link…

reasonabl_human··on Ask HN: I was hit with a patent troll lawsuit, how do I deal with it?
What jurisdictions include such restrictions? Just curious, have never heard of this.
reasonabl_human··on Start Your Own ISP
Great stories, thanks for sharing!
reasonabl_human··on Richard Feynman’s Integral Trick (2018)
This is the same line of thinking a lot of ‘coding boot camps’ seem to take- why learn 4 years of computer science and engineering fundamentals when you’ll just be using node.js in the workplace?

A dangerous trap IMO- both are valuable but incredibly different. The former is teaching a narrow-scoped trade as opposed to learning a full-fledged engineering discipline. The latter is much more generalizable and equips you to understand / build / use most tools going forward, rather than overfitting use only to the current fad of high-level tooling.

reasonabl_human··on Why gold and Bitcoin are popular
Exactly. This is why Eth has a wildly superior value proposition than pretty much any other coin, because it drives a useful blockchain ecosystem and isn’t just another stagnant store of value…
reasonabl_human··on The Elephant at WWDC
One of my favorite bundles of docs to peruse through from time to time. I go in with a specific question and end up going down the rabbit hole of learning a ton of other interesting design patterns instead
reasonabl_human··on G7: Rich nations back deal to tax multinationals
Well this is just false. You are not at all responsible for a company’s actions just because you are a shareholder. HN is evidently quite out of its depth with these kinds of threads.
reasonabl_human··on All controversial trades by Senators in the 2020 Congressional insider trading
They weren’t given financial data from company execs… instead a research report on pathology / virology. Cut and dry, not insider trading. Vote to pass new / other legislation if it bothers you that politicians can trade stocks freely.
reasonabl_human··on Xbox co-pilot mode changed disabled sister’s life
It was a big source of internal pride when I was at Microsoft. As far as tech companies go, Satya’s version of Microsoft really does give a damn about people, including it’s employees. Great place to work.
reasonabl_human··on NixOS 21.05
Are you up for explaining these gists? We use nix extensively at work and yet I’m having trouble wrapping my head around these. Node dependencies have been a thorn in our nixification of some packages, C / C++ has come easily.
reasonabl_human··on NixOS 21.05
We nixify all in-house development packages at work, it isn’t that bad once you get the hang of it, and comes with an awesome amount of ‘just works’ when integrating packages on custom devices down the road.
reasonabl_human··on Making $100k as an Employee versus Being Self-Employed
Do you employ others within your LLC? If not, how do you drum up clients / contracts? Would it have been possible to drum up some contracts at lower hour amounts while still working full-time?
reasonabl_human··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
Which do you prefer? I’ve been rocking the Bose QC35 II’s for years but am wondering if in-ear solutions can compete now for commuting on foot (metro, buses, etc.)
reasonabl_human··on New Snap Spectacles Feature Augmented Reality Display
Most HN folks interested in hacking on an AR platform will be happy to know there’s a far more capable open source software and hardware platform:

https://docs.projectnorthstar.org/getting-started/faq

100 deg FOV, as many functions / connectivity features as a HoloLens 2, now that’s awesome. You can bypass the virtue signaling, limited app ecosystem, and high price tag and build whatever you’d like.

reasonabl_human··on Bitcoin’s plunge intensifies, tanks 30% to $30k in single day
Don’t take it too literally, the point is YTD is still positive and 1YR charts are ridiculously in the green, beyond any bull’s dream not too long ago
