Agreed. It's a matter of discipline. It is a a balancing act between:

1. A constrained specification where its difficult(but not impossible) to shoot yourself in the foot.

2. Devops: as in equitable participation of operators and developers in maintaining configuration on a build it, run it basis.

Languages like skylark/starlark, dhall, cuelang, jsonnet promise a constrained spec(for operators) while being expressive enough(for developers). But after using skylark, jsonnet and dhall in production, personally I haven't seen enough adoption in terms of developer contribution so the promise of expressiveness which is attractive enough for developers hasn't been true for me.

At my current workplace, we have taken a middle approach. We use typescript to generate/emit yaml/json and use "official" validators to validate this configuration. The developers get a familiar and "blessed" frontend to the configuration while the operators can still enforce schema validation, resources and security policy on the generated config.

But yes, if one could import this base typescript package directly in their application, and generate the configuration which can be then picked up by the operator pipeline and isapplied to the infrastructure. That would be bad. Really bad.

One of such sandboxes is Deno.

Great little writeup ! After mangling YAML, HCL, JSON for years as an ops engineer, I have come to the same realisation. In fact, I have put this into practice in production pipelines by using: jkcfg[1] for the last couple of years. Two data points: 1. Zero developer support contract rate around YAML syntax and templating issues 2. High number of contributions in our private typescript configuration library from developers. Using typescript as an ops frontend has made operations a lot more approachable to folks.

Recently I took what learnt in the last 2 years using jkcfg/typescript and taken it to Deno in form of an opinionated port of jkcfg called: dxcfg[2]. Its early days, but I would bet on Deno/typescript for future ops configuration.

I have built an app template which uses Go html/template package to render html on the server. The app is enhanced using sprinkles of javascript(stimulusjs, svelte single file components) on the client, wherever needed.

How far did you go ? Something comparable to wasabi ?

I have also observed this. We had a custom thing over Wasabi : https://github.com/intuit/wasabi which was quite difficult to maintain, but compared to the paid solutions out there was still cheaper to do. I wonder why aren’t there more products in this area.

I don't like the idea since it essentially kills hope. Hope that a relationship might work out when the time is right. Putting a timer on hope is a bad idea.

I have written about 10+ medium and big projects in Go for production over last 6 years. They were written mostly for CI/CD, APIs, cron jobs and various pipelines in e-commerce and consumer electronics domains. Have personally never needed generics or have felt that I can improve the code by using generics. I also have quite a bit of Java experience so I do know why you would need generics, but it just never came up in Go. Maybe my opinion will change with the new proposal getting implemented, but at this point I don't see how.

It's already happened with the lynchings, killings and sporadic riots, but at scale of India, it just doesn't leave a big enough mark. It's kind of sad really. India rationalizes the most horrific acts of humanity, shrugs and moves on.

I am not sure about this. India has never been good at conforming to a particular point of view. Aurangzeb tried it. Indira tried it. I read an article about traffic of a country implying how lawful it is. And just before reading this, I almost got knocked down by a big car jumping a red light while on a bike(In Bangalore too. We call ourselves civilized here). So whenever I get worried, we are falling into absolutism, I then recall how chaotic our streets and roads are. It's kind of a strength-is-weakness thing with India. You can't enforce a law here, but also can't impose a fascist state. I guess we are just destined to be the average guy of the world. Like the Big Lebowski, we only want our own patch of carpet, everyone else can go fuck themselves. Hail Tribalism :/

platform/packages is open source, but I guess the split is done so that the manufacturers can ship their own versions of these components. Also I guess manufacturers are more responsible for these components now.

Not sure. Several of high change frequency components from telephony were moved to platform/packages. Also Google has probably not dumped the latest changes yet.

If you don't mind, would you share the reasons for making Deco open source ? This obviously looks high quality and I guess developers would be open to pay for it.Was open sourcing the project always the intention? Not that I am complaining :)

Merging Chrome OS with Android means that now it will have access to the humongous ecosystem of App Developers, Platform Engineers, OEM's, ODM's, cheap ARM chipsets, a gazillion of tiny hack shops across China, Taiwan and India and test labs. And more in the form of an established brand name.

Android is bent and tested in unthinkable ways due to its reach. Let's see if Chrome OS is up to it.
