reallydontask··on Apple Won a Battle to Lose the War
If it's a pain to unsubscribe you'd think about it before subscribing again.

There is also people that might be put off if the process is notorious for being unfriendly or cumbersome

How much this affects subscriber numbers is a different story altogether.

reallydontask··on “Worst cloud vulnerability you can imagine” discovered in Microsoft Azure
I'd guess that the azure us gov cloud defaults to stuff not being open to the web, so if you spin up an azure function this is only available internally, but this is a guess
reallydontask··on The Clickbaitification of Netflix
My old boss had multiple profiles sort of curated around topics said that it was a bit of hassle to set up but worked really well for him.
reallydontask··on This Can’t Go On
Popular or not, there is a lot of merit to that view. After all a lot of the emissions are driven by manufacturing of goods for export to the West, thus it makes sense for us to take some responsability for them
reallydontask··on Scenarios in which Tesla FSD Beta 9.0 fails
I think you need 500 karma before you can downvote
reallydontask··on It feels lonelier at the top with everyone working from home
The British civil service has London and National salaries.

I think based on your home address but not sure.

reallydontask··on I might have gone a little bit overboard
Not sure this is a good explanation as, for instance, the concept of a dry county/municipality is alien to most europeans.

Similar with healthcare where it's by and large provided by the state.

Obviously speaking from my experience which is limited to the bigger countries in europe

reallydontask··on GitHub – nushell/nushell: A new type of shell
man free for me shows the BSD library functions manual, maybe it's different in Linux
reallydontask··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
>Minimum of 3 parking spaces for a 4 bed in the UK?

This is certainly not my experience, unless you are counting on street parking and even then, that's a stretch

I'm only thinking of new developments

reallydontask··on Stadia’s VP and head of product leaves Google
I can't answer that but i can say that i'm probably 100+ miles from the nearest google dc.

Not sure if any of the network checkers run on gcp

reallydontask··on Stadia’s VP and head of product leaves Google
In my experience, it's indistinguishible from local play.

On average I get a single noticeable slowdown event every 3 sessions, so for me it's worth it

I'm on cable, 200/20 with a ping in the mid ten ms range.

reallydontask··on Shops return to rural Sweden but are now staff-free
I've seen this in NYC too
reallydontask··on Gab has been hacked and 70GB of data leaked
Can't speak for Brazil, but in the UK this trend has been greatly exacerbated by Brexit.

Spain is indeed closer to the US in some ways as the legacy of Franco is very hard to forget by both sides, which causes all manner of weird things

reallydontask··on Businesses should try to be the best, not the biggest
Sometimes, other times only if you ignore externalities
reallydontask··on TV detector vans once prowled the streets of England
> Advertising free children’s TV (and radio) may have delayed the onset or rampant consumerism fuelled by commercial TV elsewhere.

I find this statement hard to square with the make up of the economy of this country and the rampant consumerism that seems to exist.

We seem to have taken the biggest hit to the economy by covid because our economy depends so much on rampant consumerism (I'm obviously simplifying)

This is not to say that I think ad free TV is bad, quite the opposite.

reallydontask··on Software effort estimation is mostly fake research
Oh man, this hits home so much.

I used to lead a software department in a small company that sold software to, mainly, the construction industry, so the go to comparison was building houses, which according to my boss, were always on time and on budget, unlike software.

The funniest thing about it was that our software was used by huge projects: Hinkley Points C, HS2, etc ... which obviously have an great track record of being on time and on budget ಠ_ಠ

reallydontask··on Airbus hit as new US tariffs come into force
Most of those will have been made in the EU though
reallydontask··on President of Mexico warns about Silicon Valley censorship
I believe that both have TOS that will get you booted out of the platform if you breach them.

This is not a free-speech issue but a de-platforming issue, it's subtle difference that seems to be lost to many people.

reallydontask··on Scipy Lecture Notes
I agree with you 100%, maybe offer to write it up for them.

It's hard to write from a different point of view from that which you hold, or at least that's what I find

reallydontask··on GitHub blocks entire company because one employee was in Iran
Tangentially related but one of my guys when to Cuba when we were using G-suite and he couldn't access gmail, it seemed to be ip-blocked.

Maybe Cuba has a very well known set of IP addresses and it's easy to block?

reallydontask··on Show HN: I made an alternative platform for professional profiles
it seems you've presented a single data point, yourself, and decided that this universally applies, which seems unreasonable.

I think most people's experiences of onboarding in new companies are somewhere in between, thus the tenure length provides another data point.

Furthermore, some hiring managers look for people that stick around for various reasons, e.g. hiring in that company is difficult due to bureaucracy, so knowing that somebody was at a company for two years vs 1 month is an important data point.

reallydontask··on USA vs. Julian Assange Judgment
I find it hard to square your statement with the election of Joe Biden, is he an outlier? I guess only time will tell.
reallydontask··on Stadia uses a web app to bypass Apple's policy on cloud gaming apps
Personally, I don't as I struggle to remember the last time I replayed a game but I can understand how some people would be put off by this.
reallydontask··on Stadia uses a web app to bypass Apple's policy on cloud gaming apps
That depends.

If you have a high end gaming pc, probably not, but if you have a regular laptop or want to play on your tv, then I'd say yes

Edit

Should add that you need a solid internet connection

reallydontask··on Google outage – resolved
> But if you're given the definitions and a couple minutes to figure it out (which, in an interview, you are), and you actually can't come up with the 10 lines of code to do it, maybe that question is working as intended after all...

or maybe the person struggles to work things out in an extremely stressful situation

I speak as somebody that finds interviews Extremely stressful and if working there is regularly my interview levels of stress then please do reject me.

reallydontask··on Can developer productivity be measured?
For better or for worse, manager's productivity is normally taken from the developers/engineers the manager manages, namely the team's overall productivity, so we're back to the same problem of how to measure developer's productivity
reallydontask··on Elon Musk Decries ‘M.B.A.-ization’ of America
If MBAs taught how to manage people then they might be worth it but alas, this is far from the case.
reallydontask··on M1 Macs: Truth and Truthiness
Whenever I've tried to submit an already submitted link, it takes me to that discussion on HN, so I wonder what people do to circumvent this
reallydontask··on M1 Macs: Truth and Truthiness
Sometimes it matters other times not. If you want absolute performance then it doesn't matter, if you want efficiency then it does.
reallydontask··on Why is Apple's M1 chip so fast?
GP said a bit of a cheat not that it was cheating.

Point is that if you try to run a different OS, it will likely run slower, perhaps significantly slower than running macOS
