realitythreek··on Things You Should Never Do, Part I (2000)
I used to read joelonsoftware religiously back in 2000 and it’s pretty funny seeing this post again in 2024.
realitythreek··on Oxide Computer: Docs
I always miss the live Discord call and never realized they were published to YT! Thanks for the notice.
realitythreek··on Behind the scenes: How we host Ars Technica, part 1
Yes but this is an article about said production deployment. Which should be more interesting.
realitythreek··on Behind the scenes: How we host Ars Technica, part 1
For some reason I was expecting it to be more interesting than just being all-in on AWS services. Its fine and a reasonable approach but kind of a yawn in my opinion.
realitythreek··on Windows 11 collects an awful lot of telemetry about your PC
WSL v1 hasn’t gone anywhere. It likely won’t until they fix the issues with v2 and VPNs.

Edit: Wrong parent
realitythreek··on Ask HN: Who of you thinks they have what it takes to start a company?
I do not have what it takes to start a company! Namely motivation and business sense.
realitythreek··on Keep work fresh by teaching your successors and investing a bit in long-shots
I wholeheartedly agree with this but want to add that the 80/15/5 split aren’t set in stone. It’s more like risk tolerance. The more you spend on the riskier activities (not exactly what you’re asked to do), the higher the chance of failure but the greater the reward. You can drive your team or organization in a completely different direction.
realitythreek··on Teenager detained at airport after trying to use “skiplagging” trick
How was this legal? Missing a connecting flight means you’re detained and forced to buy a new ticket? Dispute that charge for not providing service as paid for.
realitythreek··on 45% of people have 20 browser tabs open at a time
I expand this idea a tad. 4-8 tabs per window. But then I organize tabs based on context. Then I can switch around contexts and still have my handful of tabs open.

Sometimes that means 1 window, sometimes that means 4 windows. Just depends on what I’m doing.

realitythreek··on Facebook turns over chats to police resulting in abortion charges (2022)
You are correct but I don’t think that invalidates the point that if you want safe abortions you need to make them legal and regulated.

I have no idea why they chose pills on the Internet but I know that more people will do it themselves if they can’t legally go to a healthcare provider.

realitythreek··on Facebook turns over chats to police resulting in abortion charges (2022)
One assumes they would have taken care of it during the legal timeframe. Not relevant if they didn’t in this case.

There’s also other options still by going to other states, but the point is that by making it illegal you’re increasing the chances of it being unsafe.

But anyway, that’s as far as I’m wading into that subject here. Don’t feel like getting into politics so much as practicalities.

realitythreek··on Facebook turns over chats to police resulting in abortion charges (2022)
Just to clarify one possible misconception, the two ends would be the mother and daughter’s phones in this case. Meta shouldn’t have the key to decrypt accessible to them.

You’re absolutely correct that it can be decrypted on either end but Meta should resist putting a backdoor in their app that allows this. If no other reason than it compels them to be in the middle of this criminal case.

Also Facebook Messenger already enables this (https://www.facebook.com/help/messenger-app/1084673321594605) but it’s not the default. It should be.

This is just basic privacy and for sure won’t protect you from a focused government attack but it’s a start.

realitythreek··on Facebook turns over chats to police resulting in abortion charges (2022)
The way to look at this is that this is what happens when you don’t have safe and legal medical abortions.

Also this is one of the reasons why e2e encryption is so important. Meta had to comply with a warrant and wouldn’t have had to comply if it was impossible for them to.

realitythreek··on Container Training
> it is a deep subject with lots of unintuitive and frustrating corners, and you won't pick it up in a day or without scars.

Do you have any examples of a corner that might give you a scar? I’ve heard this a lot but haven’t experienced it myself.

I’ve spent a number of years working primarily with cloud foundry. Started working with k8s in the past year and I’ve mostly found it straight forward. But I’m far from an expert yet.

realitythreek··on Sinkholed: A DNS Horror Story (2019)
The word Uber has existed in English speaking countries for much longer than the ride sharing service. Using that spelling doesn’t affiliate you with the company. The opposite actually as the company used a common word.
realitythreek··on Musk Sends Cease and Desist to Zuckerberg over Meta's 'Twitter Killer' Threads
They surely could build what they released in a matter of months, but my guess is the jumpstart Meta had came from the Fediverse and not Twitter. There’s many similarities and they have plans of Activitypub interoperability in the near future.

Also can’t imagine Meta’s HR/Legal would be that dumb. Easy to avoid putting Twitter people on Threads team.

realitythreek··on Simple Unix Chat
Is suc scaleable? I didn’t see any discussion of managing conversations across a cluster of ssh-capable hosts and you’re not going to support more than a few thousand with a single ssh server.
realitythreek··on Simple Unix Chat
Of the three (Slack, Teams, Discord) I actually prefer Discord. Its the easiest to use, the fastest, etc. Too bad that any corporation of size uses Teams or Slack.
realitythreek··on Far Cry 1.34 source code (2006)
Can you explain how it’s not true? I’ve personally run software from the 90s. I am not a myth!
realitythreek··on Far Cry 1.34 source code (2006)
It seems dumb and it is dumb, but it’s also an important feature of Windows that your terrible app from the 90s can still run today with minor changes generally. Less so if it’s win16 but anything win32 is good to go.

Also, Linux has a similar philosophy as Linus has eloquently described in the past. [1]

realitythreek··on Apollo is dead. Long live Apollo
This isn’t exactly how Reddit worked either though. Each subreddit is a community with its own rules.

I’d also not exactly how fediverse works except for direct links. You read posts/comments from your instance.

Mastodon should figure out an extension to simply redirect links to your instance. It would remove a lot of confusion.

realitythreek··on Over 900 Rarbg Magnet Link Repos Anonymously Nuked from GitHub
This isn’t a criminal case so the process doesn’t involve guilt. It actually allows everyone to stay out of court. Unless the copyright holder then sues the uploader.
realitythreek··on The Condiment Packet Gallery
You should consider sharing if you think it’s notable.
realitythreek··on Far Cry 1.34 source code (2006)
There’s a bunch of costs to releasing closed source code as open source. Generally they’d have to have a team of developers review it, they’d need their lawyers to review it and any licenses. That every company that had licensed code used would also need to go through their own process.

At any time, one of them could say no and the process stops. So you’re basically paying for everyone’s time and possibly to relicense some parts. And im sure I’m missing other parts.

realitythreek··on Fidelity deepens valuation cut for Reddit and Discord
Exactly, this was what I was trying to say. Being sustainable can be enough, it doesn’t have to be the next Meta.
realitythreek··on Fidelity deepens valuation cut for Reddit and Discord
I ended up on Reddit from a search result last night and it was slooooooooow. I’m not sure if that’s the new normal but was surprised at how bad the user experience had gotten.
realitythreek··on Fidelity deepens valuation cut for Reddit and Discord
This seems like the problem with capitalism. You start with a company that is providing a great service using 25 people. But it does well so throwing money at it can make it better (and worth more), right?

But not everything has to be worth a lot of money. You could just keep being a great community and double digit employees.

realitythreek··on Pixar was never a masterpiece factory
Inside Out was great too.
realitythreek··on Scared tech workers are scrambling to reinvent themselves as AI experts
Yeah what most companies are even thinking about right now is prompt engineering which doesn’t require an advanced degree.

Actually developing models is a much smaller field (in terms of jobs) and the overlap with software engineering is small. I’m sure you can make a lot of money in it, but you’re better off coming at it from data science.
