readme··on Don't Use a gmail.com Address
I host my own email. I also have a gmail account, that I've had since the beta.

I cannot tell you how many times I have encountered a person that asks for my email and then looked at me confused when it didn't end in gmail, outlook, or something, and then ask me for another email, as if only that would be good enough.

readme··on Resources to Get Good at Soldering?
I've taught people to start with surface mount before. It's really worse depending on what you're soldering. A lot of people doing hardware hacking will get tons of mileage just out of being able to solder on a chip with a soic-8 package. That's easy enough that you can learn it on day 1.
readme··on Ask HN: Resources to get good at soldering?
you attempted a skilled technique without practice, you were surprised when you screwed it up, and then you quit

this is not a good pattern!

readme··on Actively exploited sandbox RCE in all Chromium versions
They would be broke quick.
readme··on Splash-free urinals (2025)
I'm honestly passionate about this topic. For a while, around the time that urinals started to appear without water, I dealt with some serious splashback issues. I forget when I started aiming for the back of the urinal. I'm assuming that's the deflection angle the paper discusses. At one point I realized, I was sometimes getting some pretty bad splashback. Perhaps because I stood close to the urinal. So I asked a colleague. He said he aims for the hole, and was confused why anyone would piss on the back of the urinal. I started doing that -- problem solved. I am for a direct hit, every time. The problem is that some urinals have a protector over the hole to prevent really smart people and children from putting paper towels in there. That thing is dome shaped, and multiplexes the stream like a lawn sprinker.

All of this, would not be necessary, if there were water at the bottom of the urinal.

readme··on Show HN: Hackney – Compare Uber, Lyft, Waymo, and Robotaxi Prices
Ah yes, an application that should exist in a free market but will probably disappear soon.

You are a good person. Keep going at it.

readme··on Show HN: YouTube Guitar Tab Parser
i love it

ai can't shred

ai will never get chicks

i will use YouTube Guitar Tab Parser to shred and get chicks

readme··on I think I have LLM burnout
I don't have much success with using the LLM to make changes to a big legacy codebase. Instead, I use the LLM to gripe about things I don't like in the code. Usually, it is a brilliant commiserator.
readme··on Qualcomm Linux 2.0
Yocto sounds like it makes me feel when I use it
readme··on Mortality associated with non-optimal ambient temperatures from 2000 to 2019
That's probably still very healthy. The study looks at deaths per year at non-optimal temperatures. Living in a desert is different than taking a sauna.
readme··on What to learn to be a graphics programmer
Out of curiosity, which fields would you say are the best to just be mediocre in?
readme··on What to learn to be a graphics programmer
I mean, there's other problems with OPs argument.

For example, "there's no chance to become the next one" implies it's only worth it to do something if you can become the absolute best person in the field.

It's a big world. Most of us will not be the very best at what we do. There are millions of fun games that were not written by John Carmack.

readme··on Hyundai buys Boston Dynamics
Boston Dynamics robots can do gymnastics...

Hey, Hyundai isn't "just a car company"

readme··on Programmers will document for Claude, but not for each other
no one expects humans to read CLAUDE.md

it's never been easier to catch up to the team guru

readme··on Programmers will document for Claude, but not for each other
I noticed this! CLAUDE.md is one of my go-to places if I want to read documentation, now. It's usually much more to the point and more accurate than whatever was intended for humans.
readme··on LT6502: A 6502-based homebrew laptop
Crazy for wanting a computer that's actually yours.

I believe there will come a day where people who can do this will be selling these on the black market for top dollar.

readme··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
which desktop experience did you try

i'm a daily mac os x user (for a long time) and I think kde plasma is better

readme··on Resizing windows on macOS Tahoe – the saga continues
Even gnome tries to be too modern imo. KDE is perfect. I used to feel like KDE was too much like a toy. Now by comparison it looks utilitarian.
readme··on Show HN: Pgclaw – A "Clawdbot" in every row with 400 lines of Postgres SQL
i love postgres and pgvector... this is exactly to my tastes
readme··on Oregon raised spending by 80%, math scores dropped
exactly

had that extra spending gone to pay math teachers the results might be different

readme··on The largest zip tie is nearly 4 feet long and $75
I'm going to have nightmares about waking up restrained in this thing.
readme··on Top engineers at Anthropic, OpenAI say AI now writes 100% of their code
I can't really trust this kind of statement since there is an obvious conflict of interest.

You can write lots of code with an LLM.

"I did ~20 PRs yesterday all coded by AI"

I guess anthropic makes you use a pull request for minor code changes.

readme··on Show HN: I built a clipboard tool to strip/keep specific formatting like Italics
You'll do better showing this to the people who would be your users. Looks like a solid idea to make some money on the side solving a problem you actually have.

A lot of people on HN wouldn't be your users. That's fine. Find them and post this there.

readme··on In Defense of Matlab Code
glad I have your ear

as much as I love the meme in your post, it's the reason I won't be able to share it with work colleagues who use matlab every day

just something to consider

readme··on ABC yanks Jimmy Kimmel’s show ‘indefinitely’ after threat from FCC chair
NHK is also available over the air in some places, if you have an antenna
readme··on Why 24/7 trading is a bad idea
it's a bad idea because your money will run out faster, if you just trade 9-5 you can space your losses out
readme··on US Congress is making more than 250M acres of public lands available for sale
The irony
readme··on US Congress is making more than 250M acres of public lands available for sale
Well how else are the rich supposed to buy the land, silly?
readme··on Sysadmins rage over Apple's 'nightmarish' SSL/TLS cert lifespan cuts
it's entertaining to me that you imposed an unnecessary security restriction on your kid's phone which resulted in inoperability
readme··on Where is programming in the *nix environment most relevent today?
It's revelant on servers, workstations, embedded systems, and supercomputers.

So, basically everywhere.

The thing is: you're unlikely to be programming directly on top of the POSIX API unless you're doing something comparatively low level to the average programming that is done in industry today.

Embedded is an area where applications are often written right on top of libc and POSIX interfaces. Even many RTOS which are not fully POSIX compliant borrow a lot of ideas from UNIX.
