I love perl, but I am strongly convinced that strong typing is mandatory for code maintainability. e70838@gmail.com

reacweb··on The End of the Golden Era of American Chess
Many Go players were bored chess players.
reacweb··on Ask HN: Fired from my first job – how do I talk about it during interviews?
IMHO, I think you should avoid saying "the company was shit" and instead focus on what you have learned in a year, how you have improved, what are your achievements. During this year, you have been contaminated by the negativity. Try to clean up your mindset.
reacweb··on I wrote a self-hosting C compiler in 40 days (2015)
Each time I use google translate from chinese to english, I am also surprised by the good quality. French to english is really bad in comparison.
reacweb··on Economics of Electric Vehicles Mean Oil's Days as a Transport Fuel Are Numbered
"fossil fuel" is a limited resource (not renewable) full of interesting chemical molecules. It is a shame that it is wasted for energy production. IMHO, it is too cheap.
reacweb··on Ways to Tweak Slow SQL Queries
The first principle for SQL optimization should be to reduce the number of queries. If you have a query inside a loop, the performances may be catastrophic. Using conditionals in queries was sometimes the only solution to avoid loops. The performance gain was enormous.
reacweb··on Linux kernel drivers in Rust might become an option in the future
At the beginning, C was a handy language with some traps and pitfalls. Thanks to standardization committees and insane optimizers, it has become a minefield of undefined behaviors and security issues. Linux is coded in C because of the "C is the desert island language". This should change and I dream to see something that will replace C at least in the kernel.
reacweb··on What we get wrong about meetings, and how to make them worth attending
IMHO the symptoms of a good meeting are: - the organizer speaks less than half the time - some points are discussed and added in the meeting minutes that were omitted in the agenda - some chaos occurs and the agenda is not fully respected (or the order is not respected).
reacweb··on Just Enough Piracy Can Be a Good Thing
Do not mix copyright with IP. Copyright is useful for artists.
reacweb··on Zen 2 Missives – AMD now delivering efficiencies that are double that of Intel
Interesting quote. I shall forward it to my boss (we are a software publisher).
reacweb··on Monsanto Effort to Defund Cancer Researchers
and sell before facing trials. Should we have empathy for Bayer that has made a very bad purchase ?
reacweb··on GitHub Outage Currently Ongoing – Issues, PRs, Notifications
There are so many ways we become dependent of github, that nobody will shame on us because we are impacted by a github outage. In this context, is it useful to protect against outages ? It may be cheaper to do nothing.
reacweb··on Libspng – C library for reading and writing PNG files

reacweb··on Apple Accidentally Unpatches Vulnerability, Leading to New iOS 12.4 Jailbreak
I think the answer to your question is not obvious. Here, it would have prevented the problem of Apple. 12 years ago while working on a military project on sun, I have encountered a similar vulnerability caused by a regression https://blog.erratasec.com/2007/02/trivial-remote-solaris-0d...

Adding this kind of non regression test is costly, but it protects against source code management mistakes.

reacweb··on Show HN: A few simple games not only for kids
That's excellent. This gives many ideas of small programs to develop with our childs. Why introduce a new language ? Do anyone know similar sites based on javascript ?
reacweb··on Subsurface – An open source scuba dive logging platform
I use regularly another of the side projects of Linus: http://torvalds-family.blogspot.com/2010/01/embroidery-gaah..... My wife has thousands of embroidery files that are nicely displayed in gnome explorer.
reacweb··on Flying cars
Take off, landing and cruising are easy to automate. IMHO, the single purpose of a pilot is to handle failures. The experience (for example https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_France_Flight_447) shows that it is difficult to react correctly when inputs are unreliable and that many crash are avoided thanks to smart (and creative) pilots (see Hudson landing).
reacweb··on Going Quiet: More States Are Hiding 911 Recordings
You can read the car plate of cars passing in front of you. It is public information. If you can easily gather the location of all cars at any time, it becomes a big privacy problem. You can identify husbands cheating...
reacweb··on The coal mine that ate Hambacher forest
I think nuclear is the best current solution, but it is too late to build nuclear plant now because it requires 40 years to be cost effective. I hope that solar will become better than nuclear in less than 10 years.
reacweb··on Electric cars 'will not solve transport problem,' report warns
Oil is a precious finite resource that is misspent because it is too cheap. Electric cars reduces our waste of oil and reduce pollution in towns.
reacweb··on Microsoft developer reveals Linux is now more used on Azure than Windows Server
If I encounter an issue on Linux (that I can reproduce), I can investigate it to its root (sometimes in the kernel driver) and fix it (or find someone who has fixed it). On windows, I have only seen issues fixed either by reinstalling applications (mostly randomly) and praying or by using annoying work arounds. IMHO, the cost is higher in Windows.
reacweb··on Raspberry Pi 4
Does the WOL work or is there a very green sleep mode ?
reacweb··on Writing HTML in HTML
I have 3 principles. The first one is KISS. The second one is DRY. This third one is that there is only 3 principles. DRY is less important than KISS. Sometimes, RY is a good way to simplify.
reacweb··on Where Has the Magic Gone?
I feel I am not a very good developer because of a similar feeling. I do not enjoy producing lines of code, but I enjoy solving difficulties. That is one of the reasons I love making prototypes. One of my favourite professional activities is to provide support. Some other team call me to help on issues. Often I know far less than them and they do not always tell all what they have done. It is like an Agatha Christy novel where I have to find the culprit (the cause of the issue). Someone else provides a clean fix. I love problems where the solution is surprising (for example https://stackoverflow.com/questions/41061400/perl-join-strin...).
reacweb··on This TRS-80
Yes. OS was an acquisition of Microsoft, but Basic, P-CODE, visual basic and visual basic for applications were very central in Microsoft. It enabled to develop office very quickly.
reacweb··on Things I learnt the hard way in thirty years of software development
The purpose of a prototype is generally to tackle one or two of the difficulties (among UX, thread architecture, dataflow, performance, complexity of data, encoding/decoding, robustness...) while ignoring most of the others. The other requirements will come back, but at least you have a good solution of the most problematic ones.
reacweb··on Things I learnt the hard way in thirty years of software development
I love prototypes. You have the joy of the blank page, the freedom of the choice of COTS. You can ignore requirements that would introduce complexity. You do not need to follow the coding rules that impose verbosity. As a result, you can build something simple you can be proud of.

The prototype is a showcase that allows to show how development could be faster if there was less stupid requirements and less coding constraints.

reacweb··on What Is a 'Nautical Mile'? (2011)
The perimeter is 40,000 km. You just need to learn pi ;-)
reacweb··on Game Builder: Create 3D games with friends, no experience required
Google is always focused on AI. I am pretty sure there will be AI among the players who will behave like humans. Maybe your best friend in game will be an AI.
reacweb··on Launch HN: Termius (YC W19) – SSH client that works on desktop and mobile
Hello, I have a phone with a big screen. I use connectbot and tmux. My single issue is that it is almost unusable when I do not have my bluetooth keyboard with me. Hacker's keyboard is not very pleasant and does not interact well with connectbot (the virtual keyboard hides half of the screen).

I will try Termius.

reacweb··on Removing duplicate lines from files keeping the original order with Awk
I have never seen this $#$var trick and google is not the friend of perl operators. Do you have any explanation ?

    perl -ne 'print if!++$#$_'
seems to work also
