I love perl, but I am strongly convinced that strong typing is mandatory for code maintainability. e70838@gmail.com

reacweb··on What makes writing more readable?
As a non native english speaker, I can clearly understand the first sentence "A strong tremor in her hand makes it impossible for her to use American Sign Language". Even if we do not know the meaning of tremor (this french word is not used since long), we can easiliy guess that it is an illness in the hands and not lose much from the understanding of the sentence. For the second sentence, I have to think a lot more to understand the structure of the sentence and to remove the ambiguities. After reading the second sentence, I am far less confident in my understanding than afer reading the first one.

reacweb··on France's Bogdanoff Twins Die Days Apart
The CNRS was condemned for defamation. The brothers are not fraudsters. The phd in mathematic was well deserved. The other phd was just the minimum to get a pass.
reacweb··on France's Bogdanoff Twins Die Days Apart
Not every student who graduates will become a world-renowned researcher. In assessing the quality of their work, I trust more what their reviewers have said publicly, than a researcher who is so far above the rest of the world that he will be able to critique most of the papers in his field in the same way.

many student work is also "word salad".
reacweb··on France's Bogdanoff Twins Die Days Apart
I am French, I was interested in the brothers when there was the controversy. Their "phd" was a translation error in their bio. To silence the controversy, they decided to actually pass a phd. Neither brother claimed to be a genius, but while they have many other activities, they passed their phd with work similar to an average student. They deserve their phd.

Their books are generally intended to popularize the scientific work of real researchers. They are well written. Their public appearances on TV are not without humor and self-mockery. They have deserved the sympathy of many french people.

reacweb··on How to write idempotent Bash scripts (2019)
you will probably love perl. Perl encourages this programming style :

    unlink ('file.txt') or die "Can't remove file.txt: $!";
reacweb··on SQLite Archive Files (2018)
Ok, I was wrong. My review was too brief.
reacweb··on SQLite Archive Files (2018)
When I read "If the input X is incompressible, then a copy of X is returned", I worry that this is broken. If I archive a file, then extract it from the archive, I can not be sure to obtain the same file. If the file is already compressed at the beginning, it will be decompressed at the end.

Maybe I am wrong. I didn't know this tool. My brief review of the documentation leads me to believe that it has an obvious problem.

The data can't be linked untill it is. With DNA, you can guess approximative physical appearance and some medical properties. Once your database is rich enough, you can build family tree.
reacweb··on Remote Pair Programming
I will defintely give it a try. Just a question. When I am the teacher sharing a terminal, how am I protected from a student typing "rm -rf /" ?
reacweb··on Remote Pair Programming
it's great! It's exactly what I need. Thanks again
reacweb··on YouTube-dl's repository has been restored
Maybe their purpose was Widevine. The youtube-dl takedown was a way to distract the attention. I don't think we should rejoice until Widevine is back.
reacweb··on Linux Command One-Liners
I fully agree: each time a command in awk or sed or bash becomes complex, it is the right time to switch to perl. Perl does not have all the limitations of (awk, sed, bash) while having concise syntax.
reacweb··on Is It Too Late to Stop Climate Change? [video]
IMHO hydrogen cars is the future. It gives the storage medium that is needed for wind turbines (and solar) to become ecologically positive. It gives a smoother transition path for fossil energy.

reacweb··on Procrastination is driven by our desire to avoid difficult emotions, says expert
I procrastinate. I am not sure there is a single reason, but one that I have clearly identified with a psy is the fear to be judged. By working in a hurry, it gives me a good excuse if the result is not perfect.
reacweb··on Ask HN: I've been promoted to Architect. What do I need to learn/do to excel?
Learn your weaknesses, learn to delegate and to trust others.

Once, I have worked with an "architect team". They were brillant, talentuous, very creative. One of them has lead the development of a software component. He has been in charge of a small team of developpers for this component. As he was very creative, he has "improved" the architecture many times during development. At the beginning, he was loved for his ideas, but at the end, the developper team hated him. Later, he was tasked to change the organisation of the source directories (and makefiles) to adapt to in house software management tooling. I have been asked to replace this guy because the team did not want to see him anymore. I have followed his ideas with as few changes as possible. It was a success. I think a good architect must be creative, but a good project leader must also be able to keep direction (limit changes). The creative guy should initiate projects, build prototypes, show roadmap, them find an accountant to replace him (someone who monitors planning, risks and costs). Either you are able to change your mindset according to project phases, or you learn to delegate.

reacweb··on Programmers generate every possible melody in MIDI to prevent lawsuits
I stand corrected. For pi, it is only a conjecture. My point remains true for "Champernowne sequence".
reacweb··on Programmers generate every possible melody in MIDI to prevent lawsuits
Takes any algorithm that can generates the digits of pi. It is proven that all the sequences of digits are present somewhere in these digits. Can you claim copyright on all the books of the universe because you can show the algorithm that can generate every possible books ?

yes. and the version 1 just provides json. After a while, the client accept to forget about xml (in favour of other functionalities) and the case is closed.
reacweb··on Alphabet earnings show Google Cloud on $10B run rate
My pipedream theory about that is that Google has an AI for modeling Alphabet. If the service was normal (not that terrible), google cloud would be such a success that there would be a trial for monopoly and Alphabet would be crushed. My theory is that google tries to ensure it will earn a lot of money as long as possible and this means not killing the golden goose by being too greedy or too dominent on a market.

reacweb··on How Carlos Ghosn Was Smuggled Out of Japan
I am a go player and as such, I have met many japanese people living in France. The story about Pearl Harbour was from an old president of the association of Japanese nationals in France.
reacweb··on How Carlos Ghosn Was Smuggled Out of Japan
For many japaneses, the attack on Pearl Harbor is the mistake where they have lost the war. The Japanese army is essentially a navy. Sailors play chess, but not go. Therefore, they are very strong to win great battles, but lack the global vision to win a war.
reacweb··on How to Exit Vim
I do not like the grep -v grep pattern. I think the regexp trick should be prefered:

    :!ps axuw | grep [v]im | awk '{print $2}' | xargs kill -9
This can also be merged in the awk command:

    :!ps axuw | awk '/[v]im/{print $2}' | xargs kill -9
reacweb··on Things end users care about but programmers don't
Once, I had to organize a meeting to propose a big reorganization of the supervision of our main software. There were some functional changes et some UI changes. I was inpired by the story about Steve Jobs and the calculator. I have brought a prototype where I could change fonts (size, boldness, italics, color), some text and tooltips. This meeting was a success. The stakeholders were happy to have influenced the UI. All the functional changes were accepted. No further roundtrip.
